Lisa Frankenstein (2024)
Future Cult Classic
When I say this movie is a future cult classic, I mean it.
Not only does it check all the boxes for a weird girl sleepover feature film, but it's truly just a charming, feel-good watch where young women can see the main character and go "I can relate to her."
The protagonist of this film, Lisa Swallows, is a misunderstood, dramatic, and iconic character. The writers do an amazing job at capturing the behaviors of the typical weird, manic pixie dream girl archetype that so many of us relate to. The character feels fresh, and brings so much personality that makes her feel realistic.
The love interest of the film, the creature arisen from the dead, is another creative and hilarious character. Despite his lack of speech, he still manages to convey so much emotion. Cole Sprouse does an amazing job in his body acting as this character, developing many hilarious and enjoyable scenes. His chemistry with Lisa is wonderful to watch, and they form an easily lovable duo.
The plot of this movie is insane, possibly some may say absurd. However, the filmmakers manage to successfully make it interesting and comedic nonetheless. The sets are awesome, with bright colors and unique 80s callback, perfect for the time period of 1989.
Overall, this movie is stellar; give it a chance. In 20 years, when this film resurfaces and people once again start seeing it for the gem it is, don't say I didn't warn you.
The Book of Life (2014)
CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED
This movie is AMAZING. It's like Coco but a 100 times better.
Essentially, this is an Orpheus & Eurydice style love story, with a strong emphasis on Latin culture. The animation is unique and well done, the writing is stellar, and it's genuinely a touching and heartwarming movie.
Additionally, there is a lot of focus on encouraging the arts and becoming your own person despite your family history. This film handles the theme beautifully.
The Book of Life is set during the Day of the Dead. It's a very wonderful film to watch year-round, but I always find myself coming back to it every November to rewatch.
Overall, it's an amazing film. I recommend, definitely a must watch.
A Ghost Story (2017)
Stunning, impactful, 10/10
This is easily one of THE BEST films I have ever seen. Ever. Truly a masterpiece.
This film isn't exactly easy to digest for impatient audiences- which is part of why it has such a low rating on many film reviews apps. However, truly, the long, intentional shots where nothing happens convey the point of the film itself.
"A Ghost Story" isn't meant to be exciting. It beautifully captures the slower parts of life, and how not everything is exciting.
The majority of this film deals with grief. The premise is a wife who loses her husband in a car crash, and the ghost of the husband is watching as she moves through her life after his death. It really gets into the small details, the scenes in films that would typically be thrown out and ignored in favor of something more exciting.
The cinematography is beautiful, the story is heart wrenching and impactful, the acting is stellar, and everything in between makes this truly a masterpiece. 10/10.
