I'm heartbroken!
1 March 2023
I love AHS! From S01 to S10 - I have my faves of course, and some have benefited from a rewatching, but overall... they all have a place for me. Cast, writing, directing, subject matter - all delicious, all smart as a whip with playful nods, all riveting, all AHS!

But this??? I'm so disappointed!!! It was neither one nor the other.

It certainly wasn't AHS, by any stretch. I don't understand how it made it past whatever usual checks and balances whenever the storyline is initially agreed?

What emerged was some poorly cobbled together story about a tragic and shameful time in recent history.

It's like a janky version of Hill Street Blues meets Queer As Folk meets Sapphire & Steel, with none of the charm.

And I agree completely with some previous reviews here - not only was it a poor AHS, it was an abysmal failure in highlighting the decimation of a close knit community due to disease, violence, and ineffective government. In fact, not only did it do a horrendous disservice to those who lived and died through the grief and injustice of that time, it did nothing to highlight the mistakes we continue to make through pandemics and society by forgetting our past.

If Murphy, Falchuck and Co wanted to take this offline and present a serious standalone drama based on the NYC themes, I would be right there, front row, eager to listen and learn and appreciate what they have to say.

In fact, given their platform, I think it would be massively important for them to use their significant reach and share such an important message.

But yeah, back to AHS - this, is not that.

I'm still holding out hope for S12!!!

I'll be watching... I'm always watching...!

Saw VI (2009)

Merely an exercise in torture porn
25 October 2009
I'm quite dubious of some of the very enthusiastic 10/10 reviews this title has received? Something is not quite right there. I've seen the rest of the franchise - Saw I was excellent, goes without saying, a very clever and enjoyable scary movie with something to say about society. The rest in the sequence paled with varying degrees, but this - Saw VI - is quite horrendous for all the wrong reasons. It plays out like a soap opera - multiple ridiculous and convenient story threads, wooden acting, lingering reaction close ups, lazy art direction, poor lighting, never ending catch-up montage. But the biggest horror movie sin committed was that it started at the gore and worked backwards. As we all know, the idea of 'Saw' is that the torture the victims endured was inspired by the wrongs they had done to themselves and others, and the consequences were somehow just rewards, with the audience left to ponder a moral dilemma. That's now gone. We are left with - How can we kill off as many characters as possible, make it as gross as possible, then make the story fit around it? I suppose for some that wouldn't be too bad of a movie, but even the gore is a bit below par, and the setups are a bit ridiculous. In my opinion, this franchise has (unsurprisingly) become a lazy, silly, money-spinner with very little to offer. I would only recommend seeing this if you have seen the rest and want to see what happens, but perhaps wait until it's out to rent before wasting too much of your cash on it.

Shrooms (2007)

load of rubbish
28 October 2007
I saw this movie tonight. Never have left comment here but feel compelled to warn you all before wasting your money in cinema - AVOID! I'm Irish and this film was made by Irish people, but never have I been so insulted by such deedley-i-isms, or laughed so hard at the completely rubbish and regurgitated story that they peddle here. Absolute load of tosh - stolen sequences from at least 10 different films, not the slightest bit scary or ironic. They were too cheap to spend any money on gore so decided to go for the 'unseen horror' option. The film actually got booed in the cinema as the end credits rolled, by not just me, but half the audience. Breathnach should be ashamed of himself, never show this film in Ireland again, and stay well away from the horror genre. Shame on Bord Scannan na hEireann for giving him the money, but it just goes to show what an old boys club the 'Irish Film Industry' actually is. *response to 'Johnofgod'* I do not work anywhere near the entertainment industry, and have as such no grudge to carry against anyone therein. In fact I'm a science student, and have no desire to pick up a movie camera. I am however a fan of cinema and horror movies and take offense when a 'popular' director picks a 'popular' genre and makes a total pigs ear out of it, when I then in turn am expected to shell out premium prices for someone else's vanity and back-clapping. I am quite certain also that the good money thrown after bad towards salaries, production and marketing on this one, could have funded 5 superior new hopefuls with the aim of in fact igniting a revival in the 'Industry' and saving the rest of us from the embarrassing drivel we got. I saw the film as the surprise film at the Horrorthon in the IFI, and certainly did not choose to see it as such. Given the surprise film from previous years, this one certainly was a surprise, and I'll be hard pressed to attend again next year. I don't know if you were there but certainly the boos I heard were not phantomised. I am entitled however to express my opinion of the film on this opinion page for the film, and given the other comments I do not think I am alone in my musings. Your unashamed vitriol towards my comments only serves to make me think that I have possibly hit a nerve with your own misgivings towards an 'industry' within which you are vaguely 'un/employed'.
