The Peripheral (2022)
RENEW
This is the best series I've watched in a long time, ok, so the writers strike somehow changed "renew" into "cancel", seriously, someone please flip that switch back again ...
Brilliant story, acting, character development, visuals, pace, etc etc, cannot fault it in anyway.
A simple example would be without giving away any spoilers, there is one scene in one sub plot where you actually truly feel sorry for a really nasty bad guy, who's done pretty inhumane things and is about to do more of the same to the good guys but they put in this scene where he's on the phone with his daughter, that just completely throws you a curve ball of emotions towards him, not that he deserves it but its character development done to perfection.
Please, please, please, give us another series.
Our Ladies (2019)
Far beyond my expectations
My expectation was for an average at best comedy which I thought I'd watch for the scenes of Edinburgh that I'd visited earlier this year.
I was drawn into a warming tale of friendship and love with an ending that left me in tears.
Great actresses (and a few actors) that made their characters feel "real", I have no doubt they all have solid careers ahead of them.
The pace was spot on, no scene too drawn out, humour was subtle in places and laugh out loud in others.
I have to admit I was maybe a bit distracted at times by the "walked there, been there, saw that" moments in Edinburgh but it is a stunning city and well worth visiting.
Beautiful film.
Doctor Who: The Star Beast (2023)
The Doctor is back !
After a few years of dross, finally Dr Who is back on form ... Russell T. Davies has brought it back with an excellent story (originally written by Pat Mills and John Wagner) that is probably older than the average viewer ;) but tweaked right bang up to date ... the stories sci-fi visuals were a spot on tribute to Dave Gibbons (wonderful) artwork ... all hail the Meep.
The initial credits makeover are a nicely blended tribute to Dr Who history revamped with a modern feel ... David Tennant slipped wonderfully back into his role as if he'd never left ... the TARDIS interior received a beautiful makeover and Donna ... errr ... ok ... nothing is perfect but that's just a personal gripe.
The only thing really missing was right at the beginning, the Doctor not pondering about having dreamt the last few years of his life .... a lost opportunity!
