Dreamcatcher (2003)
Don't Blame Stephen King!!!
Like many King fans, i was really anticipating this film but once again, i came away angry and disappointed. Can't movie directors ever get it right??!!
Firstly i would like to say that i have read the book, and like most of King's, it is amazing and addictive and i couldn't put it down...absolutely terrific.
However, like many films based on his novels e.g. The Shining, Dreamcatcher seemed to contradict everything that the novel contained.
Like most Stephen King books, behind the main goryness or plain horror, there is the underlying themes of friendship and family values, ethical issues of race and gender, as well an analysis of the human existence. Where was this in the film???
*SPOILERS AHEAD!!!*
In the book, Duddits is 'special' because of his disability, he isn't an alien!!! That was just added for some freaky film value and to tell u the truth, i was more than enraged. Not only that but the film was completely terrible at explaining the friends' 'gifts' and why the gun was a phone. Not only that, but they seemed to decide to just change the entire plot at the end...i mean, i won't go into details, but u should read the book and just skip the film. The book is brilliant, forget the aliens, because it is the human ethical issues that are important...but that seems to mean nothing in Hollywood. The same happened in Kubrick's The Shining, however, although Kubrick dramatically strayed the plot, at least his film was well made and was just mind blowing in quality and acting professionalism...Dreamcatcher is sadly not so. It was confusing and just seemed utterly pointless. It didn't seem to emphasise the danger the aliens' presence brought, nor did it emphasise the importance of the friendship...it was just a cheap gore fest with a complicated, ill-explained plot.
However, all i can say is...DON'T BLAME STEPHEN KING!!!! He is one of the greatest storytellers of our time and this film was just a diabolical attempt to cash in on his brilliant talent.
What a Whopper (1961)
Cheeky, family fun!
I saw this film today and must say, it made me laugh. It didn't aim to be a major box office smash and it wasn't, but it was fun and relaxing to watch. I was amazed and glad to see so many great names appear, and it made a nice change to have a plot that wasn't so complex that it gave you a headache. I enjoyed it greatly and i know my cousin of eleven years old enjoyed it too!
