Invasion (2021)
Great, but slow
I almost didn't try this show because of the low ratings on this site. I'm really glad I did though.
I can see why, if you're averse to slowly revealing plots, you could get frustrated. Personally, I more sensitive to various other film and television crimes, like bad writing, poor acting, or a predicable plot. This show doesn't commit those sins.
Instead, the show evolves from the viewpoint of people with limited knowledge and shows how they might react in an extraordinary situation. It does this by establishing realistic characters and effectively controlling tension and mood.
I really can't fault it for anything other than the pacing.
Looking forward to season 2.
Sinsegye (2013)
Derivative
Maybe I've seen too many gangster movies (is that possible?), but this one doesn't quite cut it for me. It isn't terrible but it lacks the subtlety and character development of the films it is clearly inspired by. What it does have is solid brutality, decent acting and good cinematography. There is something cool about a bunch of slickly dressed dudes walking in unison. Hwang JeongMin is particularly good. If you're new to the Korean gangster genre, I recommend you see A Bittersweet Life for the gold standard. Otherwise, I think you're better off re-watching Infernal Affairs, The Departed, or Reservoir Dogs.
Gomorra (2008)
Realistic and Fascinating.
I'm usually a fan of gangster films, but this is definitely a bit removed from the American classics of the genre. For a start it's very realistic - to the point that on first glance (randomly in the middle of the film) I thought it might be a documentary. Those thoughts were quickly dispelled though by the brutal opening violence (which was, in its way, a bit stylish).
Although fans of violence will get their kicks from Gomorra, the power relationships and social implications are the real point here. It's ultimately a pretty damning and fascinating portrayal of the Naples underworld. What I really like are the connections made between that world and the one most of us inhabit, through popular culture (film and couture) and industry (chemical dumping and, er.. couture).
