Only thing good in this move is Timothy Dalton
26 January 2008
I bought the movie because you can't even rent it these days. Being a HUGE Timothy Dalton fan it was worth the money. But the story is weak and there is no chemistry between Vanessa Redgrave and Dustin Hoffman. I'm quite confused as to why Hoffman was chosen to play this part. He certainly doesn't work with this material or this cast. Don't get me wrong.... I think Dustin Hoffman is a FABULOUS actor but just not in this movie. Even though Timothy Dalton is in the movie all too short a time, it's worth seeing if you're a FAN. He's gorgeous (as always!) and well worth watching. I believe it was made just after the mini-series Centennial so I see his physical portrayal of Oliver Seccombe in his character to some extent. Dalton fans.......check it out!

Surprisingly Good!

I was pleasantly surprised I quite liked this movie. Witty writing (some "inside" jokes I got, others I didn't - maybe due to actors speaking on top of one another), great acting (notably John Cassini), great cameos, interesting and unique directing. I rented it to see Jeffrey Meek (very disappointed he was in it such a short time, blink and you'll miss him!) but found the movie remarkably entertaining. I'll actually watch it again before I send back to Netflix. I think actors and wanna-be actors will thoroughly enjoy this movie. The ending is somewhat expected but wish they'd done something different (and more positive). Too bad the movie wasn't better received except for in the "festival" market. I suggest it to anyone who loves the acting biz.

Dalton fan

I give it a 7 ONLY for the first part where Timothy Dalton performs as Julius Caesar. He was FABULOUS!!! Great performance as usual from this man. Having been a longtime fan of Mr. Dalton's, I can't believe I'm just now seeing it. I actually bought the DVD so I can watch his performance over and over. Even though Leonor Varela was okay, she DID have HOT chemistry with Dalton, more so than she had with Billy Zane. But then what woman doesn't have on screen chemistry with Dalton (well, maybe Mae West!). I read that Varela and Zane were engaged but never married. I can see why when watching them on screen......LOL!!!! BORING!!! Oh and Caesar's death scene is AMAZING, even though I winced throughout. Anyone who is a Timothy Dalton fan should rent (or buy) and watch the first 90 minutes. You won't be sorry.

HUGE Timothy Dalton fan

I wonder if this movie was made the same time as Jane Eyre. Timothy Dalton (I LOVE HIM!) had the same character type as Edward Rochester (only some of his lines in this movie were hysterical). Not that this is bad....BUT it's weird because the two movies are so different. I love Timothy's performance enough (LOVE Jane Eyre BETTER) to buy the movie.

It was also a pleasant surprise to see Patrick Stewart, though he wasn't in it very much.

The movie wasn't as "horrific" as I thought it'd be, which again was a pleasant surprise. Fans of Timothy, Patrick, Stephen Rea and Jonathan Pryce should check it out.
