American Beauty (1999)
Exquisite
I found this to be well crafted, beautifully shot and incredibly well acted. Kevin Spacey as always carried the film, but the peripheral performances were of an extremely high calibre. The story was simple, yet had enough twists to keep you guessing. A must see film.
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Better but still disappointing
The first 45 minutes of this film were horrendous, but then it started to improve. Yet I still left the theatre feeling disappointed. I know it has been almost 30 years since the original films were made, and that he has to appeal both to die hard star wars fans and also a whole new audience, but I think he failed on both parts. The dialogue was dire, the casting of Annakin Skywalker was all wrong (How can anyone believe that this 'pretty boy' could ever become Darth Vader'?) and the love story seemed overdone (running through the fields etc). In some cases more is less. Special effects are OK if used to enhance a film. Lucas uses them to try to distract the audience to how weak this film really is.
The Searchers (1956)
Possibly the best western ever
John Wayne in a departure from his usual strong arm roles. He gives a sensitive portrayal of an uncle searching for his niece who has been kidnapped by Indians. This is about one mans single minded determination. Excellent !!!!!!
The Nature of the Beast (1995)
Could have been better
The basic premise of the film is that Jack is apparently on a business trip driving around the back roads of America. He meets Adrian who is hitchhiming. Both of them have a secret to hide. One of them has stolen $1,000,000 of mob money from a casino in Vegas; the other is a serial killer known as 'Hatchet Man'. The truth as to who they really are is not revelaed until the bitter end.
The basic story is sound, but could have been handled a little better. The film seems fragmented and clichéd, with an ending that is nonsensical.
