Die Trapp-Familie in Amerika (1958)
Wonderful!
Saw this film online in German, a language I don't know extremely well, yet I could understand enough to know the context of the dialogue. I found it to be a delightful, if fancifully abbreviated, account of the Trapp family's initial hardships and subsequent success, in America. The female lead playing Maria was charming and more or less believable. The sequence in which she seeks the meaning of "sex appeal" is hilarious (and 100 percent clean). The young actors portraying the children are charming as well. Sure, you could nit-pick it factually, but just sit back and enjoy the show! You won't be sorry.
The Andy Griffith Show: My Fair Ernest T. Bass (1964)
It's a joke, folks!
Some of the previous reviewers are taking this episode much too seriously! The theme of this episode is the pretentiousness of some so-called society people. This is a common theme of comedies. The Three Stooges were masters at this. Issues such as the lack of consequences to wrongdoers are not to be considered literally in comedies like this. Just enjoy the laughs!
While the silliness of a character like Ernest T. Bass can easily be overdone, his appearances on The Andy Griffith show are well spaced and funny in their own right. The scene in which Barney attempts to demonstrate to him how to enter a room is a classic!
Jenseits der Stille (1996)
Heartwarming but not syrupy
Interesting look into the world of deaf parents with hearing children and the difficulties and challenges the situation presents. Parents come to depend upon older daughter and then her younger sister for communication with the hearing world. Deaf parents struggle to understand their daughter's aptitude and interest in music. This causes tension within the family and misunderstandings that threaten the family's harmony.
Solid performances by both adult and child performers. Moving and heartwarming without being syrupy or overly sentimental. Somewhat distracting is adult Lara's voice being dubbed into German (the actress, I believe, is French) which causes her lip movements to be slightly out of sync with the sound but this is not a serious problem. Well worth watching!
