Well this was different
5 May 2020
Yes it was a good ep. And we don't get answers. In a way we didn't get answers in the real Claus von Buelow case in Newport. Claus may have done what he was accused of but IDK? This case isn't really similar but look the defendant put up a good show if he's innocent even though he had an unseemly temper.

Clarence brought to the station

This was a all-around good ep. but it gets quite funny when Lumpy's father Fred Rutherford (Richard Deacon) makes an upset call to Ward (Hugh Beaumont).

Getting ready to graduate...
3 May 2020
The guys in Wally's circle of friends aren't the brightest and tend to mess up a lot. This time Eddie --and Lumpy-- jump to the wrong conclusions. How could Eddie have such a great GF: that's a bit weird. And what the heck was Clarence singing at every opportunity (Zume zume a zuma zume?). This was a very good Ep. as the show was winding up it's final season.

Beautiful City.
17 February 2020
The plot wasn't bad though I have to say I don't care much for the animal themed stories. What a backdrop though --for the good acting--in the city of Savannah. And And from what I read it was shot in January! It didn't look like winter at all. As for the teen girl with the prominent ears. Wowza.

Icelandic beauty
20 January 2020
I was hoping for more from this new Hallmark. The story was ok as was the acting. That's it. What I was focused in on was the shots of Iceland which I expected to be much darker and more stark in its appearance. So I would recommend this film just to view this island country in the North Atlantic with its small population, cool climate, and high standard of living. The story was pleasant enough but visually there was a lot to look at.

Yes it was bad...
28 December 2019
...but I'm not sure it was supposed to be anything else but bad? Suffice it to say it held my interest. I wonder if this film was made in the wake of the enormous success of "Blazing Saddles?" Not that it has a similar script but it was supposed to be a comedy Western.

Nope...
23 December 2019
The actors were good--Ms. Pope in particular--but that's about all I can say positive. I thought the script was forced. As in 'we have to do this, so let's make it cute.' Inclusion is ok but not when it comes to Christmas. Make it New Years eve or something?

Country music: a historical look
24 September 2019
It was very good. I wouldn't worry about who may have been left out. Yes I can think of a few names. But that--naming names-- is not the point of the series. Obviously music was the centerpiece but it was very personality conscious as well. There was quite a bit of angst and tragic events covered. From drug and drink abuse, to plane crashes, marital problems. It never took away from the historical look.

As for Peter Coyote being too serious for the content, I'm sure thought was given to other narrators. Coyote gave Burns what he wanted I have no doubt. They didn't say but what was the most successful country song to ever cross over to Pop Music? Based on this series I would have to say it was likely "Ode to Billy Joe" by Bobbie Gentry.

Dodge City v Ft.Worth
15 August 2019
Well there isn't much competition between the two pictures. Michael Curtiz directed a Flynn/DeHaveland '39 Classic for Warners. But I noticed something in the scene "Ft Worth" ripped off from "Dodge" The burning train ending in a shootout.

It appears to me that a stagecoach segment from that scene was taken from "Dodge' and included in "Ft.Worth". Not copied, spliced into the picture. I don't think I've seen that done before? Like most have said Scott was OK in the film but Brian made it something above a mediocre western with his fine portrayal.

A larger Burr?
24 July 2019
This was not a good episode. As am aside it appeared Raymond was wearing some sort of body cast under his suit coat. It almost looked like he had a bullet-proof vest on which added a few more inches to his middle. He didn't appear injured, just larger.

This was good. Although you could see the plot very early on and the ending was predictable. If you didn't, then you weren't paying attention to the lack of physical appearance of the characters.

Return of Collins?
2 May 2019
This episode--an above average one-- included Ray Collins who portrayed Lt. Tragg since the show's beginning. Veteran actor Collins had been absent for many months and presumably ill. He only had a few short lines and looked frail.

Collins was a big part of this series and with his career coming to an end he was still in the credits until 1965.

This Ep. also had a African American judge in the courtroom scenes. This may have been a first in US TV.

Fiction that is history
28 April 2019
In skimming through most of these reviews what is missed is that while this script is fiction, it is based on fact. The Damon character is clearly a portrayal of James Jesus Angleton even though his name here, is "Edward Wilson."

Characters are similarly based on real individuals. Others like the William Sullivan role that DeNiro (the director) himself played was Wild Bill Donovan the real former Medal of Honor winner who started the OSS at the request of FDR.

So was it necessary that the viewer have the historical perspective to enjoy this film? No, it's good enough to stand on its own. However it did help to be aware of the enormous factor that the Damon character had on post-WWII history in the person of the very real James Angleton.

There has been talk of a sequel and I have a script which centers on the year 1967. It would be political dynamite. I would love to see DeNiro do it but it would be very hard to get made, believe me.

One more thing about the movie. DeNiro made a visually beautiful film. It adds a kind of dream-like quality to the stark realities of the Cold War script. DeNiro got the job done here with "The Good Shepherd."

Voiceovers

Mary Badham was an unusually talented child actress. Certainly she could have done adequate voice work throughout, as she did at the 20 min. mark on the episode.

Hurdler has problems...
7 February 2019
This was a good adaptation of the Cheever short story. Gary Merrill plays "Cash" an ex-track athlete whose specialty was the 110 high hurdles. The event acts as a metaphor for the best times of Cash's life which is becoming increasingly complicated as he moves through middle-age.

Ms. Thaxter has a problem. Whether Mr.Scott can recognize this and tries to take advantage of her or he is just unlucky, isn't clear. In either case the characters played by these fine actors find serious trouble in their confrontation on a commuter train.

The Day Reagan Was Shot (2001 TV Movie)

Al Haig got a bum rap!
1 December 2018
Yes this was a good film. And I add that I was in no way expecting a documentary. I think the producer tried to combine information with entertainment.

I thought all the actors were good. Holland Taylor was excellent as "Nancy" while not trying to do an impersonation of Mrs. Reagan. I think the players who were standouts in this ensemble were M.Murphy (Deaver), M. Greene (Bush) and of course R.Dreyfuss (Al Haig). R. Crenna was good as Reagan and J.Jessop was both funny and accurate as W.Casey (you have to know of him to understand why!).

If I had to list one particular aspect that the film brought to those who didn't have much of a background to the real story it's that Reagan came very close to death. He was both brave and lucky (he got to the hospital quickly). Considering this may be the only info some people ever see of this terrible incident I'd say this was a not-too-shabby look at the day the 40th President almost lost his life.

Terrific character actors
22 October 2018
Yes this was a good film mostly on the strength of its ensemble cast. You really can't do much better than Ed Begley, Jim Arness, Arthur Hunnicutt and the great Alan Hale (Sr). The leads McCrea, Drew, and Stockwell are good also.

I didn't see the script as being particularly realistic. Maybe a preacher could talk a clan mob out extreme violence? This would not have happened in a film like "To Kill a Mockingbird" which came along about ten years later, also involving a child narrating the film as an adult like "Stars in my Crown."

But I liked the film's dealing with their health crises and the conflict between medicine --such as it was in that time period-- and the idea that prayer had a factor in the healing process.

Newest version of classic?
28 May 2018
I didn't think this latest production of "Little Women" was particularly strong in any area. From casting to music score, to script. From a technical aspect I also thought the audio was muffled and I missed some dialogue because of it.

If "PBS" were trying to differentiate from the other versions, particularly the 1994 Academy Award nominated film, I think this was accomplished. Unfortunately while worthwhile this production did not live up to the potential of its cast or material.

Yes, it was different
22 May 2018
My first complaint about the production was technical. I thought the audio was muffled. I missed some of the dialogue. I fully expected that this version would be different in approach than the others. And I think that difference was its lack of emotionalism.

I did like the look of the film. But that wasn't enough. I hope to see it again when it comes out on disc.
