Simon Says (2006)
Not too bad for a B movie
This is your typical film where a group of cocky teenagers go out camping in the woods, to be killed off one by one by two retard twins (i think they're either twins, or one guy with split personalities).
Throughout the film there is no real plot, except for the teenagers being killed, in gory fashion. (I must say, for a low budget, effects weren't too bad. Some of the deaths were totally ridiculous, but not as stupid as the final destination films).
Towards the end there was a scene where the last girl of the group was trying to trick the bad guy "Simon/Stanley", and there was some reasonable acting and dialogue. She eventually tricks him and puts a butchers knife in his head. We all think he's dead, then suddenly his body disappears. A hand (his)then appears on her face.
The film then ends with him working at a garage station where he leads a new group of teens into the woods and almost certain death. The final scene sees him open his basement door to see the girl who we thought had killed him, and she has twins (obviously fathered by him).
END MOVIE.
I rate this film 5 out of 10, meaning "OK", "Reasonably good effort" etc...Usually I think B movies are poor, and even though most "proper" film critics would rate this as crap, i think it is deserved of some credit. The leading bad guy and the last surviving girl acted quite well, some of the deaths are reasonable. Effects were good considering price, they didn't make it too obvious that the budget was tight.
In conclusion, this film is a good effort for a B movie, worth a watch. Don't get your hopes up and you won't be disappointed. If you expect nothing of this film you may end up pleasantly surprised.
The Golden Compass (2007)
A Film About Dust........
......To put it at its simplest.
(Before I begin on my review, I state that I will not reveal much of the plot, in case any readers have not yet seen the film).
This film is a wonderful tale set in a parallel universe. It is a great big adventure, where peoples souls exist outside their body, called daemons. They exist as animals which feel the same things as their human bodies.
The film begins in a school in England, but the adventures see our young brave characters travel to northern countries. There is plenty of action within the film and a good original plot makes it a great watch.
The only downside could be the slightly fake graphics at times & the sudden ending, but generally the graphics are excellent - so much of it has been done on the computer but looks realistic.
In conclusion, I give this film 7/10, meaning very good. Its an all age action adventure suitable for anybody, it is a film which you can definitely not call boring!
I Am Legend (2007)
Gripping Tale Of Post Apocalypta
I have just arrived home from seeing a great, well produced film, but with its abrupt ending left me disappointed and let down.
The film begun with an absence of dialogue for almost an hour, which was strange but refreshing and original. It was brilliant at first, an excellent storyline with champion acting - despite a fairly low amount of action, I found the film very intense and gripping.
However, the end of the film was rushed, leaving the viewer with a sense of confusion and with many questions unanswered. I didn't like the way that the characters Anna and Ethan were introduced, it seemed very sudden and a little too convenient.
The film ended with Anna and her son entering the colony in the mountains. If she knew about the colony, why not go there instead of staying in the infected city? Also, I would have felt much more satisfied we saw more of what happened when she found the cure. The film literally ended as soon as she handed the cure to one of the military personnel, it was very abrupt and sudden.
I give this film only 7 because the ending seemed to have made the rest of the film seem rather disappointing. Also, if you look back at the film afterwards - not a great deal of things happened. I liked the whole flashback idea, it was very effective, but if there was more information about how the virus was set loose etc...it would have made the film much more favourable in my opinion.
7 out of 10, but if my preferred changes were made then this film could possibly be worth all 10 stars - as the acting was brilliant, the concept of the man's relationship with his dog and the surroundings was very well done, only let down by a weak ending.
Click (2006)
Funny Film With Valuable Moral
Click is not a typical comedy film, with two different parts to it. Apart from the predictable (but very funny) gags, there was an important moral to the film which was put across very effectively in the film.
The acting was very good, all the cast performed very well - throughout the funny and serious parts. The moral of the story was that you shouldn't neglect your family and take for granted the important things in life, this was put across very emotively, i'm sure it could make the toughest of people cry.
The film has a typical end; Sandler woke up and everything was a dream. However, despite the typical ending it was the most suited to the story - because it allowed him to relive his life as a reformed character, who will not make the same mistakes again.
In conclusion, an excellent film! You do need to concentrate to fully appreciate the film, it really suits people who can relate to the story or contemplate it.
