All the Happy People (2021)
THIS IS ART!
Since its inception, the film industry for all intents and purposes has been exactly that: an industry!
It has always been about making money, it has always been about profit. It has always pandered to the mainstream.
The goal has always been quantity of butts in seats over quality of the product. And I'm here to tell you this: people, we have been cheated!
There is so much that film can offer us. It is not just about mindless entertainment, it is a true art form!
I present to you the digital age. Welcome, at long last! No longer are there countless barriers and red tape to filmmaking. No longer is the medium so expensive that one must recoup his or her high costs.
All the Happy People proves that in spades by giving us a totally fresh take on what cinema can truly accomplish! It creates a whole new genre that feels more akin to a painting in a museum than to films of the past.
If Quentin Tarantino wants to keep shooting on film, that's his prerogative, but the digital age has allowed creative filmmakers to make their art more cheaply than ever, and I can't wait to see what else it has to offer!
Teknolust (2002)
JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF WEIRD
I am not going to lie to you, this movie is Weird, with a capital W! But, it is the good kind of Weird. It is the fun king of Weird.
It is Weird the way that Weird Al is Weird, and that's not a bad thing. What I am saying is, it may be Weird, but it sure is a whole lot of fun at the same time!
Everything is good in moderation, as they say, and Teknolust is no exception. It is just the right amount of Weird, in my opinion.
The acting was great, and some great casting decisions were made. Tilda Swinton was brilliant and beautiful, as always, and Jeremy Davies was a great choice for his character.
I honestly can not think of two actors who could have done a better job, in my opinion.
La vita è bella (1997)
LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL...IS BEAUTIFUL
What I am trying to say is that this is a beautiful picture in every sense of the word. It brings me so much joy and sadness at once that I just don't know how else to describe it.
I have seen this movie several times and each time is just as sad and beautiful as the last.
Who would have thought that a film about the holocaust could be so funny at the same time? But it is not a joke. This does not poke fun at the atrocities. You may have to watch it for yourself to understand.
This shows just what movies can really be, and how powerful a tool they really are for telling real human stories that make you think. They can convey such meaning, feeling, and emotion as to really make the audience think about life.
Most movies you forget as soon as the credits roll and you go on with your life, but this one stays with you.
Beautiful Girls (1996)
MY REVIEW OF BEAUTIFUL GIRLS
This lovely little picture encompasses so many outstanding performances it is hard to know where to begin.
The movie is a such a pure example of the magic of storytelling and the importance of performance as an art form to deliver something that is truly meaningful on the screen.
It has depth and adds something to our lives by enriching them through the experience of having seen this movie, experiencing the performances and emotions.
Most of the movies you see these days are tired old remakes, reboots, or very banal blockbuster comic book movies totally lacking in any kind of meaning.
Yet still these great talented actors sign on for such pictures, no doubt because that is where the money is.
But I can not help but think they wanted more from their careers, to create true art like we see in this movie, which should remind us just what movies can really be.
I think, when they made this picture, they knew that they had created something beautiful indeed.
Sans soleil (1983)
AN EXISTENTIAL JOURNEY THROUGH SPACE AND TIME
This movie is a unique experience that is as much a record of these people and places that once existed and were captured here on celluloid as it is a journey into the mind of the film maker.
We see his memories through his lens and hear his thoughts narrated as letters. It is part fiction and part documentary.
I am sure I have never seen anything else quite like this, and I am sure I never shall.
People may try to mimic it, but Chris Marker was such a unique film maker with a unique vision that I am certain it cannot be done.
The people and places captured in this movie no longer exist, at least not in the same form as when Chris Marker was there more than forty years ago.
Beetlejuice (1988)
THEY ARE MAKING A NEW BEETLEJUICE MOVIE
Well I just now learned that it seems as if they are honestly going to be making a new Beetlejuice movie and well, it's coming out later this year.
That was a surprise to me. Sorry if I'm a bit late to the party, but I had not heard about it until today, literally just a moment ago.
I do not yet know if it will be a sequel or a reboot or what exactly, but it is going to be called Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and it seems as if Michael Keaton will once again be reprising his role as Beetlejuice.
That's good. He is a good actor, whether it is here or as Batman or Birdman.
Tim Burton will be returning as director as well.
Speed (1994)
THIS MOVIE HAS A GREAT CHASE SCENE IN IT
O. K. so the truth is this movie IS a great chase scene! Truer still, this movie is the GREATEST of chase scenes.
"Cut to the chase" is a saying we hear all too often in our daily lives, having become quite a bit of a cliché in recent years. Do you know where the quote comes from?
It is from classic Hollywood films, the original silent pictures when movies were made to excite and entertain with daring feats and stunts and, yes...chase scenes.
From the very beginning, film makers wanted to thrill their audiences, not bore them with slow dull dialogues. My point being, chase scenes are what make movies what they are, in a way.
So laugh at Keanu's stiff acting, or the corny one-liners, but the greatest chase scene of all time is nothing to laugh at.
Back to the Future (1985)
BACK TO THE FUTURE IS THE ULTIMATE TIME TRAVEL MOVIE
I wonder if Robert Zemeckis when he was making this movie knew that it would turn out to be the ultimate time travel movie. I think he must have!
This is the movie that basically defined the genre and set a very high bar that no other movies could ever hope to live up to.
I would hate to have been a film maker at the time working on my own time travel movie and then this one comes out and I realize that mine is pure garbage by comparison.
I would probably give up and move to the desert somewhere and never think about making another movie again.
Back to the Future is very clever and very engaging. And, it is a whole lot of fun!
The Green Mile (1999)
THIS IS MY REVIEW OF THE GREEN MILE
What is there to say that has not already been said before? Not much it would seem but I feel I have to say it anyway.
I have to declare that this film is an absolute masterpiece. Something to be seen by all and treasured by future generations.
Have you gotten bored of the cinema lately? Have you grown weary of the same old tired stories being told and retold to exhaustion?
If so you are not alone.
Fortunately, we have films like The Green Mile which will never grow old.
It is a shame that Frank Darabont retired. He made this film and The Shawshank Redemption and it may seem greedy to ask for more.
He has already given us so much, but please Frank, I beg of you, please come back and give us another of these perfect films!
