OK but not Lovecraftian
28 March 2007
This episode has taken it's name and it's main villains from the Lovecraft story with the same name. Though this story bears little resemblance to the original Lovecraft story.

The story is full of blood, to the extent it's almost an exploitation film. The storyline isn't too bad so if you are into horror films and especially gory ones then this is worth watching. The actors are good, and I can't wait to see them in yet another story.

If you are a fan of Lovecraft and read the original stories and expect something similar, then you will get disappointed as this episode is more direct, bloody and not really in the spirit of Lovecraft.

Hollywood meets the samurai, poor result...
9 December 2003
This film is in essence very much like "Dances with wolves" and "Braveheart" mixed together. Also it is very much in the style of Hollywood where political correctness and action sequences are more important than historical facts.

Apart from a beautiful scenery I did not enjoy the film very much, in particular the ending was very poor.

Very slow symbolic film
29 January 2003
This film is very slow, it's about a disillusioned youth that prowls around killing Yakuza. There isn't really a plot, just critisism of the society that Japanese youth grows up in. There is strong symbolism in the film, but I found it quite hard to understand all the time.

I think there are films who deal with this subject better, never the less the film is worth seeing.

This is a hilarious comedy with a message
8 January 2003
Warning: Spoilers
One point that seems to have escaped most of the comments on this page is the fact that the film makes a strong point about Korean/Asian womens position in society. (Warning, The below text contains two comments that might be considered "spoilers")

The tables are turned in this film, the husband is the one who is gentle and caring, he does cooking and buys a gigant teddy bear for his wife. The woman is the one who is insensitive and violent, coming home drunk, one time she rapes her husband after coming home drunk. Also the gangster womans sidekick treats his girlfriend very badly, until she makes the point, "Your boss is also a woman but you treat her with respect, whats so different about us?".

I think maybe this whole thing needs to be taken into consideration to understand all of the jokes in the film.

The Blade (1995)
An Epic Saga About Revenge
16 June 2002
This is a fantastic fantasy film, not only has it got many exciting characters, it also has a story that builds up the injustice and leaves you crying out for revenge. You also wonder who is the main character, is it the woman telling the story? Or is it the sword brandishing heroes? As the final scenes come you are really cheering for revenge to be done.

I read the previous summary and it's got some errors in it. The main Character doesn't actually loose his hand to the tattoed Dragon, he looses it long before this mythical character turns up.

Also, this book he finds isn't called "the blade" and the fencing style he uses he discovers himself as he in frustration spins around and strikes out at at things, discovering the power of spinning around at great speed.
