The Goldfinch (2019)
Stick with the book....don't waste your time on the movie
What a colossal waste of time. I voraciously read the book. It was a masterpiece in storytelling and character development. I couldn't put it down. Best book I've read in years. The movie is a total disaster. Awful acting all around aside from Nicole Kidman (Mrs. Barbour) and Jeffrey Wright (Hobie). The young and adult versions of Theo were painful to watch. Theo's childhood in Las Vegas is an amazing part of the book but it's reduced to about ten minutes of confusion in the movie. It is hard to find two young actors who can accurately portray alcoholic druggies and the actors who played Theo and Boris failed miserably. I just didn't believe their close bond at all. If I hadn't read the book I would have been totally confused by this whole movie. Scenes just thrown together. Great scenes left out entirely. I was really looking forward to the movie and am so disappointed with the result. Better direction and a better lead actor could have made all the difference.
Pet (2016)
Holy crap it's bad
This movie got 4 stars for Dominic Monaghan. Not because his performance in this movie was stellar....because it was not....but because I loved him in Lost and Lord of the Rings. That being said this is a big, steaming pile of crap of a movie. It's horribly acted, cliché, predictable, etc. I got about forty minutes in and just couldn't bring myself to finish. When it gets to the part where he kills a guy and feeds him to the dogs in the animal shelter I was done. The movie tries to have a clever twist by making the girl in the cage the actual crazy one. Wasn't executed well at all. Don't waste your time or money.
Blair Witch (2016)
Hoping for a fun, nostalgic romp....boy was I disappointed!
As is the case with the majority of horror films nowadays, almost all of the scary parts are shown in the trailer. They weren't that scary in the trailer and were even less effective in the movie.
This type of film is heavily dependent on back story. You need to make your audience dread watching the main characters set off into the woods.,,almost to the point where you're screaming on the inside for them not to go. This movie completely missed the mark. One of the main characters has a sister who has been missing and they allude so some shack in the woods where she was last seen. This did not instill fear. A backstory on the history of the woods, other deaths and disappearances might have helped me fear them.
Acting was not horrible but wasn't good either. I didn't care about any of the characters. I wasn't rooting for any of them. I wanted them to get killed. I understand the "less is more" theory for horror films but this one had almost no substance at all. When people started to die they just disappeared, or were dragged off the screen. LAME.
I hated that they chose to show the witch in this remake. More so I hated how they chose to portray her/him/it. I don't know what the hell it was supposed to be. It kind of looked like one of the creatures from "I am Legend". Not that I expected it to be a stereotypical witch with a pointy hat and a large warty nose but come on.
Ending is sudden and anticlimactic. Don't waste your money folks. Download it if you're that curious.
The Stand (1994)
How did I skip over this gem until 4-26-13?????
I was very pleasantly surprised by this mini-series. It was very well directed, acted, and just an all around great adaptation of a Stephen King Novel.
Also, It was cool to see all the A-listers in the cast,(e.g., Ruby Dee, Gary Sinise, Rob Lowe, Molly Ringwald). I love the post apocalyptic genre and think this series is better than most of the movies I've seen in said genre.
I am so often disappointed with the instant-watch movies on Netflix, so going into this film I had very low expectations. I was hooked within about ten minutes of episode one. Hope you enjoy as much as I did.
Hemlock Grove (2013)
if Netflix was a dog I would pet it and say "good boy"
Wow. I was pleasantly surprised with this series. Kudos to Netflix for another quirky, fun show.
that being said.......It took me about four or five episodes to care about the characters and actually get a bit interested in the series. The writing is good, but could be better in my opinion.
I knew NOTHING about the show going into it. I was afraid at first that it was going to be another teenage vampire romance story like Twilight (puke). All I can say is it isn't so far...
Love the genre and I'm interested in watching season II if they get picked up
Werewolf: The Beast Among Us (2012)
not a total waste of time but pretty bad none-the-less
I am a big fan of this genre but was greatly disappointed with this movie. First of all the acting by every person in the film is high school level amateur at best. I didn't think the special effects were as bad as some of the other reviewers said (I've seen far worse) but there were a couple scenes where I almost started laughing (which I'm guessing is not the desired reaction the director was going for). There are two twists or surprises in the film, one of which is very predictable, the other just plain stupid and out of place. Yet another movie from Netflix that I took a chance on and find myself wanting my 90 minutes back. If you're stoned or drunk or just have no taste at all this is a good film to kill some time and get in a few laughs.
