Need for Speed (2014)
Great entertainment
I don't know why some have so harsh feelings towards this movie, which I found to be very, very entertaining. Maybe that's because the movie was loosely based on the video game series by EA, which nobody really likes. But you don't have to like them, just rate this movie, which stands on its own feet. The lead actors were quite refreshing and I found their acting very natural. Of course there are clichés and cheesy situations, but this is a piece of entertainment and it delivers. The action scenes, while completely ridiculous, were great fun to watch. This movie is about high speed cars and how people feel towards them, and all of that outside the speedways.
After Earth (2013)
A Story of Survival, Bravery and Coming of Age
I really don't understand the hatred reviewers seem to have towards this superbly produced movie. When I saw the movie, I didn't even know that it was directed by M. Night Shyamalan, a director I greatly admire for his very own sense of storytelling. Not all of his movies are excellent, but he certainly knows his craft. So I was pulled into this story of survival easily and enjoyed it very much.
Mankind had to leave Earth to Nova Prime and is at war with a alien species called the Ursa, who are capable of "detecting" fear, virtually smelling it, because they are blind. So the rangers developed a method of hiding their fear (also referred to as ghosting) in order to fight these monsters.
Father and son are on a training mission and after being hit by an asteroid storm crash landed on a hostile planet which turns out to be Earth, the planet mankind had to leave many years ago. The air is unbreathable and requires vials to be inhaled every 24 hours. The father (played by Will Smith) is injured badly after the crash and can no longer move due to broken legs. But they need to send an SOS signal out to space so that help can arrive. The beacon is located in the tail of the ship, 100km from their current location. So the father must send his son on the journey there to activate the beacon.
Of course, many dangers await young Kitai (Jaden Smith) on this journey. The final danger is one Ursa, that the ship carried and is now roaming the area. Kitai has to overcome his fears to save both his father and himself.
The images are beautiful, the music very atmospheric and the story, while simple, unfolds in a very interesting way. The film doesn't hide its simplicity. It is a moral story.
Some say the message of the movie resembles that of Scientology. You know what, I couldn't care less. I don't care about Scientology, I don't even want to know their message. And frankly, the message of the movie is not "Have no fear!". It is certainly an important aspect, but it focuses more on adventure elements, bravery, coming of age and the relationship between father and son.
I don't know why every new movie must break boundaries and be spectacular in every single way. It is almost as if the majority of the audience wants their expectations to be fulfilled. Some critics don't like it, so it must be bad. Watch it with open eyes and don't worry about what others say. You might be very positively surprised.
The Box (2009)
What's not to understand?
This movie is a solid piece of movie making. It offers a lot of mystery, nice production design and a great atmosphere. I'm always amazed by the lack of tolerance and arrogance of the internet community. Giving this movie the lowest rating just because you don't understand it? That's like saying advanced physics is bad because you have no idea what it is about. Next time just stay away from the keyboard if you have nothing to say!
Actually the story is not that hard to grasp. It becomes quickly clear that the box is a test by a higher power to evaluate humanity. All the details exactly who or why doesn't matter. In fact, I would have liked it if there were less clues and more suspense until the end. Sometimes it's not just the story that provides entertainment, but the experience diving into a mystery.
The movie is not perfect and not as good as Donnie Darko, but it's much better than Southland Tales.
