August Rush (2007)
Beats the heck out of No Country For Old Men!!
This movie was entertaining, void of foul language and was definitely worth watching. Granted, the storyline may have been somewhat convoluted but, these days, most movies are. At least this one was somewhat on the believable side and had a happy ending instead of credits rolling with virtually no end. My wife and I totally enjoyed this one. I do wish the ending had been a little longer in order to do a bit more development of the story's end. I agree with another reviewer in that the music was good and the idea of how the guitar was played, by August, was very unique. The "dualing guitars" segment could almost be a classic piece of film.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
What a piece of garbage.
How this film even got nominated for an Oscar is beyond me and the fact that is won as best picture totally blows my mind. I thought it was pretty good, with some really different ways for a hit-man to kill folks. But, the ending was so horrible it ruined the entire movie. I think the writers just flat ran out of material and decided to run credits. You are left not knowing how one major was killed; not knowing for sure if an actress was, in fact, killed and not knowing what happened to either the stash or the money. Tommy Lee Jones has always been one of my favorite actors but, in this piece of trash, I don't think he was on screen for much over 15 minutes total and his part basically had nothing at all to do with the so-called story. All I can say is - YUCK!!!!
Rock Around the Clock (1956)
Great movie of the 50's era
Although obviously not Academy Award material, this movie definitely reflects the beginnings of Rock and Roll in the mid 50's. I was in high school when this movie was first released and, naturally, as a teen, I thought it was totally "Cool". I never thought Alan Freed had much talent, on screen, and of course, he is remembered as having been a key figure in the "Payola" scandal of the late 50's. It was fun to see this movie again after so many years and it's a great addition to my collection. I was really enamored with Lisa Gaye, as a teenage boy and I had no idea she was the sister of Debra Paget until many years later but there is a definite resemblance. As for the dancing, it's fun and completely realistic of the time. My wife and I still jitterbug much the same way they did back then, even at our ages.
