Your Honor (2020)
So good and gripping
Love it.., I have no idea where it's going....and that's great.
A very dark story, where there's no winners...
Bom Dia, Verônica (2020)
Huge surprise
Wow! Couldn't wait to come back to it and see more episodes. Terrific writing, great acting, riveting. Can't wait for next season
Absentia (2017)
Season 3 is fabulous
Best show on TV this year! Can't wait for the next season
Goliath (2016)
Loved Season 1 and 2.....Gave up on 3 after 2 episodes
What on earth happened to Goliath? I truly loved the first two seasons... I was looking forward to #3. What were they thinking....or smoking!!! It's a boring mess.
Oh well! At least I got two great seasons out of it!
Secret City (2016)
Thank you Netflix
Thank you Netflix... You made me watch a great series I knew nothing about... Even if it's 2 years old, it feels incredibly topical. And love the female lead... Can't wait for season 2
Ozark (2017)
What a great surprise
Had no idea this would be that good... I'm totally hooked! So many twists and surprises. And the acting is superb! Jason Bateman is really fantastic in this. And what's great is that it is so different from everything else... Despite everything that happens to them, it still feels realistic and believable. Every episode tops the previous one. What a treat!!!! Can't wait for Season 2
Homeland (2011)
A really terrific season 6
I was apprehensive about the series moving to the US but I was so wrong... Season 6 is terrific, And feels very close to our daily challenges and preoccupations. After a rather slow first two episodes, the series goes into full gear and never lets go... nail bitter after nail bitter! Can't wait for season 7 in Virginia.
Miss Bala (2011)
Strong film, nicely told with a different feel
Beware of those viewers who really just want to see another Femme Nikita or something similar with non-stop unrealistic action led by a pretty babe.
Miss Bala isn't like that. (Dumb title though. Why not just keep Miss Baja? Are they afraid we gringos can't handle that name?) This film is about the way innocent Mexicans are caught up in the narco wars when they're just trying to live their own dreams.
In addition to the strong theme, the movie works because the story does more than carry thematic resonance -- there's suspense (which requires patience that the video-gaming generation may not be able to muster) and a very sympathetic central character. No, she's not always active, but she is reactive; she isn't just passively passing through this story. We care about her because she has a dream that has been sullied, because she cares about others (her friend Zuzu and her brother), and because, even after she's been abused, she's willing to take a risk at the end to prevent a murder.
Add all this to a well-shot movie with an unusual but effective mise-en-scenes in many of the beats and very scary bad guys, and, well, the sum of it all is a very strong movie.
By the way, there are no continuity lapses in the story and the finale makes sense -- but again, it's going to take some thinking. This movie is not an American action pic -- there's more thought behind it, and more thought needed to digest it.
Five Across the Eyes (2006)
Five Across The Eyes is a remarkable achievement
This movie is 91 minutes of real terror. There are no elaborate contraptions, or reasons given for why these five girls are put through this hell. They simply run into the wrong person and spend the rest of the film fighting for their lives trying to get away.
The climax is a classic. A simple and inevitable conclusion that is as realistic as it is depressing. The horrors that happen in this film have a weight to them that you feel--and see on the character's faces. Simply remarkable for a debut feature for all involved.
The film has a nitty gritty video look that some may say is BLAIR WITCHy but that comparison is strange. This is not a documentary. The camera shows the events as they unfold, but no character speaks to it.
The filmmakers have crafted an electrifying experience for fans of extreme cinema, and one I strongly suggest you check out when it is released in your country.
Blood Trails (2006)
An excellent and different type of horror film!
While I normally prefer to read other people's thoughts, I felt the need to comment on "Blood Trails" because I loved it while some people seem bothered by it.
I feel this is a shame because the movie actually tells a very twisted and intriguing tale.
"Blood Trails" is a story about temptation, and following through on your impulses.
It is not a "killer in the woods chasing people" movie. No matter what you may think, if you go in expecting "Wolf Creek" you will be disappointed. There are chases through the woods, and there is a killer who slaughters a handful of people, but you know exactly who the killer is throughout, and I argue that our main character is not trying to run away from him.
She rather likes it.
By now you may know the set-up. A tough looking bike courier named Anne (Rebecca Palmer) runs a red light and finds herself chased by a bicycle cop (Ben Price). After believing that she's made her escape she is startled by the cop who offers her his phone number instead of a ticket.
We then meet Anne's boyfriend Michael. As a character Michael could be compared to chicken soup. Sure, he may be good for you, but if you ate it day after day you'd surely become bored. This nice guy persona is played perfectly by actor Tom Fredric. His sincerity is almost repulsive once you see what naughty things Anne has been up to.
Anne, you see, is not a chicken soup kind of gal. She may pretend to be, but in a brief flashback we see her playing a rather intense game of S&M with the bike cop. Anne has a dark side. And when the handcuffs come out she becomes scared of what she is doing and she runs away. She runs back to her apartment, back into the arms of her boring boyfriend and together they run to the mountains for a getaway.
Once there Anne has sex with her boyfriend and fantasizes about the bike cop. She may have run away from the bike cop, but he's the one she is thinking of when she orgasms.
The next day while on a ride this fact begins to bother her. She liked what happened. When the bike cop suddenly appears and kills Michael in one of my favorite recent kills...well it is almost as if Anne "willed" him into appearing and solving her problems.
Does the killer run towards Anne and then kill her? NO. And that is why I think some people simply don't get the movie. The "killer" is not trying to kill our main character. This is not Leatherface, waving a chainsaw, chasing after some poor unfortunate kids who happened to breakdown in his neck of the woods. Once the bike cop eliminates her boyfriend, Anne and the bike cop begin a bit of "hard to get".
She runs and he follows(although I'd argue that she doesn't run very hard, and sometimes maybe runs towards him). She stops and asks for help and so he kills the person. All he wants is for her to admit that she is a freak. And at the end of the movie, I believe she does admit it.
Bad performances? I strongly disagree. I think these are very intense and intimate performances and if you're not squirming in your seat during the torture/sex scene than you may have just been bored by this point--expecting and wanting a different type of movie.
I'm not saying people don't have the right to their opinion. Hell, one of the people I saw the movie with didn't like it either (they are dead now). But when you see comments made like "it looks like a student film" or "Worst movie ever made", this type of hyperbole is just so lame when quite the opposite is the case.
I highly recommend the movie.
