Intelligence (2014)

Another great show that ended too soon
17 February 2024
Maybe this was just ahead if it's time, or maybe it didn't get enough promotion. By the time I knew it existed it was already canceled. It was smart and very entertaining. I love the concept and the way they used the tech on a regular basis. My favorite was the virtual walk through recreations manifested by the implanted AI, allowing Gabriel to visit the still scene and examine evidence in detail. Some shows have a gimmick, like 'Lie To Me', where the protagonist had the ability to discern whether someone was lying by observing their micro-expressions. This would be displayed in slo-mo, making for some very interesting visuals. Unfortunately, the show very quickly moved away from its main premise and we got only a very rare slo-mo look at micro-expressions. With intelligence, the abilities that made Gabriel different, or special, were at the forefront. This show never forgot what it was about.

Casting: excellent. Josh Holloway makes a very believable ex special forces hero, working in the world of espionage, aided by his AI implant. The rest of the cast are all great fits for their roles. Even weekly guests are perfect with lots of familiar sci-fi faces, such as Lance Reddick.

Intrigue, espionage, action, emotion and just the right amount of comic relief. I really wish it had continued for more seasons.

Argylle (2024)
9/10
A fun movie
2 February 2024
This is the kind of movie that requires suspension of disbelief and willingness to just have a bit of fun. Kind of a 2024 foray into the comedy/spy genre popular in the sixties. Think Get Smart. Henry Cavill is great, playing it straight in the role of Argylle, a character who seems to be an homage to the many bulletproof spies who went before him. Okay, the hair seemed weird at first, but once we see the doll version of Argylle, we get it. He's a sharp and precise example of heroic perfection. Of course his hair is sharp. Lol. Sam Rockwell brings the unique energy and style that make him a loveable scene stealer every time he shows up. That little Rockwell dance, yes!! I admire Bryce Dallas Howard . She did an excellent job, and yet I don't feel this role really suited her as much as others she has played. My take: Fun to watch. Lots of cool details, excellent secondary characters (Brian Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, Samuel L. Jackson and Chip the cat), and an excellent soundtrack. A little ice skating sequence at the end was a bit of a shark jump, even for this genre, but overall I would recommend.

Not THAT bad
30 December 2023
True, the writing is a bit clunky here and there, but whatever... it's a Netflix movie. It's not terrible. It's watchable. People's expectations and standards are so high. Not everything is, or can be, the best thing ever.

People are complaining about the acting. The acting is fine. Lord knows we've seen much worse. One thing I found weird was Charlie Hunnam's accent. Actually, in sci-fi movies set in a different galaxy it's always strange when accents are Earth regional, but we just have to get past that, since the actors are from Earth. 😁. I guess I'm used to either Brit or American accents in Space because I found his Irish accent a bit distracting. And, Irish? He isn't even Irish, so this was an odd decision. Someone said there was no motivation for anyone who joined the rebel crew. Actually I found their individual motivations to be pretty clear.

Overall, I enjoyed it. I liked the world building and the esthetic of the different locations. Mainly, I'm just happy to have some sci-fi that isn't set in a dystopian future. I'm so tired of that. For the past few years the majority of sci-fi seems to be a mix of dystopia and zombies with a few super heroes and monsters thrown in. For me, this is a welcome change. I'll definitely watch part 2.

Couldn't hang in for the end
19 December 2023
Wow. This is the worst movie I've watched, no make that "tried to warch", in a very long time. I tuned in to watch it on Prime because of a couple of actors I like. The thing was 45 minutes in and there were less than 5 minutes of meaningful dialogue. Helen Mirren? Oh, honey. Well, I hope you had fun. Jason Momoa was like a parody of a caricature of a cartoon of a bad guy!! Kal Drogo, how?? Should have given Alan Ritchson, Charlize Theron and John Cena wayyyy more screen time because they were the best thing to be seen here. In my mind I'm calling this the "loud cars, loud guns with a little tiny bit of talking movie". What was it actually about? Who knows? Who cares? Oh, and Vin Diesel is apparently impervious to bullets. Lol.

Welcome to Wrexham: Family Business (2023)
Season 2, Episode 13

Family Business indeed
8 November 2023
So often WTW has brought tears to my eyes but this is the first time it happened before the opening credits. The words of the theme song hit differently every time.. "Don't forget where you come from ", from the work it takes athletes to achieve success, the history of a town behind their team, the stories of the fans.. and this episode's focus, the families. It's tough going through what some of the guys (and owners) went through growing up, but people who grow and evolve, who accept change and love their family through difficult times.. they have one of the most important qualities found in successful people; resilience. When you have resilience with determination and intelligence you can do anything. I just love the heart of this story. Go Wrexham.

Even better than expected
18 October 2023
I'm the Grandma that went with my 30s daughter and teen granddaughters. We are all great fans if Taylor Swift so we were already hyped and happy to be going to the film together. IMAX, best seats, everything in order to watch a concert movie. And then it started. Wow. Sounded amazing, better than I thought it could, and as we watched , my granddaughter shouted into my ear, "we would never have been so close to the big screen at a concert". And she was right. Seeing it in such detail was just the best.. everyone was a bit reserved at the start but it didn't take long before the dancing started. It was more than a movie. It was an experience and the best of all was the absolute happiness in that theater. Best time I have ever had at a movie. Taylor Swift is a superstar! Her energy, her talent, her heart and stamina are off the charts. Absolutely loved it!

The Wheel of Time: What Was Meant to Be (2023)
Season 2, Episode 8
10/10
Almost read the books
7 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I loved season 1 so much, in spite of being quite disappointed in the finale. I didn't want it to end and to satisfy my craving for more Wheel of Time, I got the first couple of books. But then I noticed in reviews the absolute enjoyment being experienced and reported by people who never read the books vs. The many complaints and lower ratings from those who had read them. So, I decided to wait. After all, I can pick them up at any time. I actually had them on my to read list before the show came along. Anyway, to get to the point, I'm so glad I decided to wait because while the readers are disappointed in any number of issues, I, on the other hand, have been loving this show so much!! The story, the gorgeous clothes, the scenery and overall depiction of the world of WOT - and the acting! Every one of the cast is amazing but I must say, for me, Rosamund Pike stands out. I'm also a bit smitten with Da iel Henney as Lan Mandragoran. What a great character. I love how he literally had Moraine's back against all attackers on the beach.

This episode was a perfect finale and has 100% redeemed WOT from the less than okay finale of season 1. Storylines converge, the Two Rivers friends reunite, bad guys get what's coming to them, prophesies come to pass and the stage is set for season 3.

What will happen? Forsaken are risen, the Amyrlin Seat is dead, a number of the Aes Sedai are lost, Egwene is stronger than ever but possibly changed, Perrin will have a target on his back for killing Hopper's murderer, and $and is now proclaimed as The Dragon Reborn!! Whew. Hope we don't have to wait too long.

Perfect
30 August 2023
I absolutely love this sweet little storyline. Every room in the house is crafted to perfection. I love seeing the miniature versions then seeing Ryan walk into the life size version. The stories are well chosen. Ryan's voice is calming and I can't imagine anyone better. The Maximum Effort channel, on Tubi, has turned out to be quite the pleasant surprise. Bedtime Stories - highly recommended for kids, little ones and those who are young at heart. I just wish we could watch it on demand. This review doesn't contain spoilers and now I am just trying to reach the silly minimum required number of characters.

Season 3 - They did it again
15 August 2023
How does it keep getting better? I heard that Meryl Streep was the big guest star for this season and while I love her, I kind of thought 'Oh no, she's such a star, they'll put her ahead of the regular cast, she'll outshine everyone". Well, wow. Of course she is PERFECT. And what a strange coincidence that in episode three, the theme runs to one particular actor outshining the others. Streep's performance, as an actor in a show within a show, was so poignant it left me in tears! Tears! Steve Martin, Marty Short and Selena Gomez are, as ever, perfection. The guys do a bit in ep 1 where they welcome her back, telling her she's what makes up their sandwich, that without her they are just two pieces of white bread. Great analogy - they are best together, no doubt.

In addition to the 'stars' of the show, we have the season's victim (no spoiler here, as it was revealed in the final episode of season 2), Paul Rudd. He's superbly cast in the role of Ben, who can be a jerk but underneath is a vulnerable guy who occasionally demonstrates a acting genius (in the show within a show), then reminds us why we thought he was a jerk.

And just like that, we are off on the latest crime solving adventure with the amateur sleuth/podcasters of Only Murders In The Building. Absolutely my favorite things on TV right now. 10 big stars.

Silly
27 June 2023
I don't know if this is supposed to be real, or if it's scripted. I do hope it's scripted because if not, either the guy is a hell of a liar or, sadly, he believes himself. He talks about his ship or time machine, whatever, which he says is 25 miles into the forest, but of course we cannot see it. One minute he is saying we are all going to be enslaved by aliens and well have to pay them a monthly fee. Then, he tells us we will all have 5 robots each to do all our work. We will have tour buses to space for everyone who has the coins of that time. So we aren't going to have credit cards, but coins? Lol. OK. He says that in this time 'they' have to keep you sick to make profit 'out of you' but in thr future doctors will only be paid if no one becomes sick. He says the water we drink, the air we breath, gives us the DNA to make us human, but babies born in space will have space DNA and will look like fish. In the future he comes from, dolphins will walk on land,. This is in 370 years. OMG. Evolutionary miracle. We'll have a drone connected to our brain to enable our brains to levitate, so we can fly. In the future we'll have a life card imprinted with our DNA. So we will apparently vote with our mind only, but then use our DNA card to stamp our vote. What??? In the future everyone will have a vehicle like the one he has, so we can all go to any planet in the universe at any time. We are so lucky that even though he has this ship he stays here in earth in our primitive time.

Constantine (2014–2015)

Oh dear
26 May 2023
Okay, so this is a 9 yr old show as of this review, but I don't think that's any excuse. Even if I weren't a fan of Keanu Reeves' version of John Constantine, I can't think I would feel any differently about this performance. I see Constantine as intelligent, assured, strong.. a man with a certain gravitas, a kind of knowing that transcends the everyday. Sadly, this TV version doesn't embody any of these qualities. He comes across as cocky, smug, sarcastic and a hot head. There is too much laughing and grinning. The writing/directing didn't help, so I don't place all the blame on Ryan. Sadly though. I find him entirely unbelievable in the role. Sorry, two thumbs down.

On this week's episode of children in space
20 February 2023
This feels like High School musical, but on a fake ass spaceship with no music . This is so annoying and awful I'm not going to make it through the first episode. Right off the bat, there is the panic to get life support on. We watch the screen as the O2 level climbs to the point where masks can come off. 100%! Lol. Room air, ambient air which we breathe, is 21%. But in space teenagers apparently breathe 100% O2. I'm listening as I type this and all I hear is moaning, complaining, gossiping, and immature bickering. Awesome sci-fi shows are canceled regularly so we can repeatedly see these clunkers launch and sink. What a shame.

Fringe (2008–2013)

Ssure I reviewed Fringe before
24 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I've been doing reviews ever since I became a member of Imdb. For some reason, only the last couple or 3 years of reviews are here. Nonetheless, I am here again to say that this is one of the top sci fi shows of all time. Funny enough, when it first aired it was recommended to me and I sort of took a quick look and said nah, i don't think so. Later, I decided to give it another go and thank heavens for that. I have rewatched the entire series about once a year ever since. The sci fi component is great, on its own, but at the heart of the show are the characters and the relationhips.

The classic themes are all here, fathers and sons, friends, lovers, enemies.. there is character growth, change, regret, guilt redemption.. It is intriguing, funny, hopeful and at times heartbreaking. Every actor is perfect in their roles. Acting talent really shines when applied to dual roles. John Nobel as Walter and Walternate was outstanding! I can't even express how Wesome Anna Torv was as Olivia and her counterpart. I'm a fan of her work and adored Olivia. But man I hated Fauxlivia!!! It was hard to remember this was the same peeson. I couldn't stand her and what she did to our Olivia got me so riled up. Lol. I thank everyone who had a part to play in bringng Fringe to life for us. What an amazing and unique series.

Enjoyable but lost a star for the hammer
7 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Great cast. Love to see the themes of girl power, and wish we had more of these kick ass girls in entertainment when i was young. Love the banter and the action. Good job planting clues that you have to look for, but whicn are not hudden for an ending that makes no sense. I feel it could have been improved so much if Moriarty had been more restrained, more subtle. I think her speech was too much because we could see it all, without being hammered wih it. Classic 'show mw, dont tell me'. I see that character playing their cards close to the chest. Moriarty is not an emotional character, but very analytical, always thinking and plotting. I would have liked to see the movie end with the Holmes crew realizing it was her, but by then she's in the wind. Moriarty wouldn't walk in there exposing her (or his, as the case may be) identity and being arrested. Otherwise, I was glad when i saw this was based on a true story. The real Sarah Chapman must have been quite something.

What a ride!
14 October 2022
Before this show I knew very little about the English Football system. I caught the first episode on a whim and I was hooked. What a journey. I have laughed and cried so many times and man I love the people of Wrexham. A big thanks to RR and RM for making this happen. Thanks to everyone involved, especially the people of Wrexham who shared their stories, their highs and lows, and love of their team with all of us. I hope there will be another season!! Best wishes and best of luck to team Wrexham from an old lady in Nova Scotia! Whether there is another season televised or not I'll be watching Wrexham for sure! Cheers!

OMG, speak up
22 September 2022
Whisper whisper psss psssss..... Why oh why are they whispering so much? Lately this seems to be cropping up again and again.. I have noticed it in a few newer shows. When a show is otherwise something i would like to watch, it's a major drag. Example - Star Trek Discovery.

Unfortunately, whispering aside, this show is monotonous, boring and annoying. I skipped and skimmed for a bit then gave up. I don't even care to see how it ends. There are so many good stories that would make awesome mini-series. This one, not so much. I like Matt Bomer and he does a credible job given the circumstances, but it's not enough to save this flop.

Interesting
14 August 2022
Cool concept. Not perfect but good actors, great visuals, and very watchable. I try the first episode of many series and usually am disappointed as they simply can't hold my interest. This one has me watching. I like the mystery and intrigue. Again, not perfect but interesting and worth a watch. Great to see Dominic Monaghan on screen again!

As for 'not perfect', I have one small issue. This is supposed to be a relatively small population closed from the rest of the world (earth) for over 100 years. They all speak English. By now they should share the same accent, but the accents are quite varied and some very strong. Even within fiction/fantasy, things shiuld make sense.

Awesome show with a couple of little problems.
1 August 2022
Well written, well executed with excellent actors. I don't usually go for scary stuff, but the show is that good, I am hooked. Two problems mar the scenery. First, the daughters. Maybe the writers have kids who act like this so they think it's normal. It is not. It's awful, distracting, annoying and overdone. Ever since the beginning of season 1, when they come on the sound is off. Hurray for mute and subtitles. 90% of reviews have the same complaint but apparently the writers don't care if we hate it.

Second problem is the neverending saga of the same bad guy. Michael Emerson is a really good actor, but come on. If there will be a season 4 please freshen it up with a new antagonist.

Finally, the train. It has been clearly stated that the train passes three times a day. But every time the scene moves to Kristen's house the we have to listen to the train. Kristen arrjves home. Train. Scene wih kids. Train. Sheryl in the yard. Train. Kristen trying to sleep. Train. So, as wih the kids, less is more.

Not great but not as bad as user reviews make it out to be.
18 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Some of the things that bugged other folks didn't bother me at all. I liked the jokes, the kids, the romance, and the basic premise which is that love triumphs over revenge. The only bit I didn't like was Russell Crowe as Zeus the egotistical. Was the accent meant to be Greek? Look, as we get older the metabolism slows and the pounds go on. I am a prime example. But wouldn't the powerful Zeus , God of Gods, have more of a "God bod", as it's called when Thor gets back in shape? With the bulging golden armor and little white skirt it was all a bit cringey. Zeus aside, there are some honestly good scenes, some character growth, and some really decent action. And.. I liked the soundtrack.

Best episode of the season; strong performances and an excellent plot. Because of this episode I'll be back for season 2. I am not a fan of the lighting, a sort of semi-dark with spots of glare, or the camera work which seems to be a zoom and blur mash up. Can't starships afford good lighting? I really dislike those elements but likely they are not going anywhere. However, if we get more episodes of tnis caliber, I'm in. Sure hope so because they have an awesome cast of superb actors.

Wow. What a fantastic season finale!!!! But man, what Henry went through, geez. At one point I was just feeling so bad for him. Then of course I reminded myself it's not real, only to feel just as bad for Theo James! What a performance! Every episode has been absolute perfection. Rose Leslie and Theo James are amazing!! I cant imagine anyone else as Henry and Clair. The novel is one of my top ten of all time and this series has more than done it justice. Thanks to everyone who brought it to life for us. Every week this show absolutely wrecks me. You'd think a person would avoid something that makes them cry so much. I can't though. It's funny and touching - poignant and emotional - while not being overly dramatic. These characters are so real. I liked this movie the first time around, and now on a rewatch yup, still liking it. Sure, the CGI isn't great but it's a good story with an excellent cast. I would love to see a sequel with the original cast, made to today's standards. This movie is 11 years old. CGI has cpme a long way. Critics got it wrong to shoot this down so hard. Damn, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively together. That makes up for the suit. Lol.
