Zhui ma lao (2003)
Entertains
Although this gets some heat for being sort of bland at times, it is still great to see Lar Kar Leung show us even as he ages he can still move around like he did 20 years ago.
Although the comedy will sometimes fall flat on its face, the action alone makes the film worth seeing. Wu Jing should be getting more roles after last years Sha Po Lang, and his skills do not disappoint here either. It's great to see Kuan Chun Chi as the villain. I remember him from Eagles Claw (Tai Seng released this and is also a fun kung fu film), and even thirty years later the man is still ripped!
It isn't 8 Diagram Pole Fighter, but Drunken Monkey is an entertaining film, but not up to the standards of Lau Kar's earlier Shaw Bros works.
Dark Walker (2003)
Good fun
This was a very entertaining flick. Danny Draven simply is one of the most talented directors in the low budget scene. The Darkwalker make-up is outstanding and the kills were cool too. Pretty bloody, but not really too gory. Check it out if you like good stalk and slash flicks.
Binge & Purge (2002)
Outstanding
This is what all micro-budget cinema should be like! Everything about this movie is really good. It does have loads of great gore, but the story and direction really carry it. Everything is so tight and professional looking. Buy the DVD from Sub Rosa because you won't regret it. Clement is a real talent and given a bigger budget, he could go places!
The Mutilation Man (1998)
Got to see this
This is a truly great piece of filmmaking. Yes, it lives up to the title. The lead charater gets seriously messed up, and yes the movie is extremely graphic in terms of gore. But unlike most italian gore, the movie has a message and not just simply exploitation, although it is a gore lovers dream.
Goth (2003)
Good character driven...This
This, to me as a Brai Damage Film lover(well, some suck) was a wierd movie simply because it doesn't really rely on gore and nudity, but it relies more on the acting. Surprisingly the actors are ALL good in their parts especially at the micro budget of filmmaking. What few FX there are by Ron Karkoska are good, especially the slit throats. But the real downfall is that it gets real slow sometimes, but it really doesn't bore, and it ususally picks up. Worth checking out.
Nikos the Impaler (2003)
Classic Gore Fest
This was great!!!! Words can't describe how awesome this is. Marcus Koch and Jesus Vega did a great job with the FX. The productionvalue was great also. I loved the cinematography. Can't wait for the next Schnass flick!
The Christmas Season Massacre (2001)
Fantastic
Man, this rocked. So many classic moments couples with great gore. The first scene with the woman getting gutted is quite nasty and graphic and it just plain rocked. Eric Stanze does his thing cool. The whole movie is great fun, and can't wait to see what Jeremy Wallace does with the UNDERTOW!
Gordo
Abomination: The Evilmaker II (2003)
Good no budget flick
I'm a big fan of no-budget horror. I have seen a lot of crap in my time. Like alot of no-budget flicks, somethings don't work out, but overall this movie tried to rise above and did. It relied more on scares, and there are a few great scare/tension scenes. The Fx are fantastic, except for some of the cgi. Overall, if you are into no-budget then check this out.
Killing Spree (1987)
Awesome
This is a classic 80's horror flick. Cool gore from Joel Harlow, who is now a big time FX artist. The DVD looks great and I am happy to see it availible for a new generation of gore fans. It has everything a fan wants from a Tim Ritter movie: good story(humorous) and good gore.
The Hunted (2003)
Good almost great
This movie could have been great if only the story was a little tighter. It is highly entertaining and the hunt scenes areawesome, but the story brings it down just a bit. Del Toro is incredible as always and so is Jones. William Friedkins direction is on and the way he handles the action is great. Nonetheless, check it out.
Oh, and even though it has elements similiar to FIRST BLOOD, it is not a rip off.
Rot (1999)
Wild
Pretty dang entertaining gore flick. It is pretty wild and to me it was never boring. Some good FX on the cheap. Now the director is doing FX on Nikos The Imapler and some other flicks. It's a little grainy but fans of low-budget gore or punk flicks should definatly check it out.
Creep (1995)
Great Low budget Flick
Man, this movie isn't for everybody, but if you like low-budget, gore-exploitaion flicks, this is classic. It has gore, moves pretty fast, but to me it is a dark tale so it isn't super fast-fun filled flick. But if you like this kinda stuff, check it out.
Super Troopers (2001)
Classic
This was a true comedy gem. Everything about it rocked. It has the real goofball humor but hopefully you'll notice the real subtle things in the movie that can even be more hiliarious. Buy this movie, and I am already lining up for Broken Lizards Club Dread.
Hunter's Blood (1986)
Very Good Backwoods Movie
Damn, this was outstanding. Excellent. Clu Galager kicks ace for a while much like in Return of the Living Dead, and I think he is wearing the same jacket. It gets brutal but call it a Deliverance knock off if you want, but it was awesome! **** out of *****
D-Tox (2002)
Good Movie
Why the crap did this get bad reviews? I mean, it is not a classic, but my god it was damn entertaining. There are some big story gaps but it is fun none-the-less. Stallone actually goes deeper into acting than his usual and it is surprisingly very good. Check it out anyways. *** out of *****
Space Truckers (1996)
Cool Action Sci-Fi Comedy
Cool flick, nuff said. Check it out. Gordon does as excellent job and you can tell it had a bigger budget than many Gordon films. The design for everything is top-notch. **** out of *****
Deathbed (2002)
Scary flick
I usually go into the video stores and can pick up a crap horror movie easily. I picked up Death Bed because of Stuart Gordon and Danny Draven. Let me tell you, this is a fine horror film, shot on quality video, it is classic in my book. Draven really sets up some tension and mood. Check it out! **** out of *****
Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)
One of the Finest!
Grosse Point Blank is flat out a great film. It has action, comedy, and romance balled into one, but this is one of the few movies that actually succeeds at it. George Armitage does a great job directing, and the cast is excellent. ***** out of *****
'R Xmas (2001)
Good Film
Abel Ferrara is a great filmmaker, hands down. His earlier works are more violent and mean but great films don't always have to be nice. His later works are toned down but the story and characters are carrying the movie nd no exception to this is his R'Xmas. Well acted and shot great. The shots are interesting and worth watching the film alone simply because the camera movements are helping to tell the story when the characters are not talking. Good flick. ***1/2 out of *****
Nemesis (1992)
Great B-Action
This movie kicks so much ass. It starts off with a bang and never lets up. The beginning is awesome, and even though Oliver Gruner is not a great actor, I don't see why he doesn't get some roles in some "A" flicks every now and then because he can be a bad-ass. Check it out or better yet buy it! ***1/2 out of *****
Death Factory (2002)
Good bloody SOV Flick
This is a quality no budget flick. Really good especially from BRAIN DAMAGE FILMS. They usually manage to put some crap out there(Blood Sisters), but this was really good(considering). The acting will win no awards but there are tits. And most importantly the Blood/Gore FX by Rom Karkos ka(?) are excellent. Really well done. Brad Sykes is growing film by film. This is excellent for SOV fare. His ZOMBIE CHRONICLES sucked. Just bad. DEATH FACTORY is worth the rent or if you love these lowbudget SOV movies then it might be worth the buy. ***1/2
Ted Bundy (2002)
Classic
I mean that. First off this movie is not a trashy movie. It takes TED and we get to see him, not him cutting up and killing women, although there is some brutal stuff in here. Savini is effects consultant for all of you gore lovers along with KNB providing the make-up, but it is used in a classy fashion and not an exploitive one. Also Matthew Bright is a great director and shows that he should have been handed many more movies a long time ago. Great movie.
Cold Hearts (1999)
Great Movie
This is a really good movie. It was well written and directed, and for it's budget shot extremely well. The only downside to this movie is the acting is sometimes a little flat but not bad. The Special FX were decent except don't get this movie expeting a Gorefest. It is more of a character driven movie with less emphasis on the special FX, which by the way, Tom Savini consulted on. I honestly could have done without the Digital eye Fx but, oh well.
And on one last note, this movie does not rip off Lost Boys. It has a similar setting and storyline and some inside jokes about the LOST BOYS, but it is not a rip-off. ***1/2 out of *****
Slashers (2001)
Excellent, All Around
Slashers is great. There's nothing more to say about that, but it is a little different. This movie does seem a little like the Running Man, but it takes a different approach to it. Honestly this movie had to be a pain in the ass to shoot with the long takes and the gore is GREAT, but the camera doesn't cut away from it because it is a "Reality" show, so you can tell it's fake at times. But Adrien Morot did a great jo and the severed heads and bodies look great. Real Bloody. The Slashers all kick ass. Preacher Man's Make-up was real cool. Chainsaw was awesome and so was the Doc. This also sports a different look simply because they shot it on high def Video and the picture is almost always super clean and clear. This is a must see for all horror fans.
Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (2002)
Slow-mo Galore
Ecks vs. Sever is an exercise in style, much like many oriental action filmmakers. And like most other action oriental filmmakers KAOS doesn't let you down. Great Style and lots of explosions. Do not go to this for anything deep, just go and have a good time with Banderas and Liu
