Doghouse (2009)
Cheesiest & Funniest Horror Flick
I am not a fan of horror films. I don't see a point in watching movies that just so that I can get freaked out or scared. But I must say, this is one of the finest piece of horror that I've ever seen.
To truly enjoy this, you must sort of suspend your logic a little. Just take things are they are set out by the movie and try not to go into bench-pressing logic.
The movie starts off with a bunch of lads, who each have their own set of problems with ladies, setting off to a village called Moodley far away from London. All of them are men in their late thirties and forties, so this is not your regular second rate teen or youth horror cast. When they reached there, they found that the village is haunted by female zombies and boy, they are in for a ride.
I'd call this more of a comedy than a horror film. There were jokes peppered all throughout the movie, and each one of them are very well placed. There's also plenty of cheese in it. I am also not a fan of gore, as I can't stomach too much of it but I find it to be within acceptable level here, not like those in Saw (which I disliked). The comedy and gore blended so well that sometimes, I felt that it was not scary at all.
All in all, I think this is something that is truly underrated, most probably because it is a British film and not everyone out there would enjoy watching actors speaking it a 'queer' accent other than those of Americans.
8/10
Ink (2009)
Honest and Concise Review
NO SPOILERS HERE. So you can read on safely.
I'm going to be concise about my thoughts. A couple of things to note before watching this movie though.
This is NOT you regular movie by a mile. Watching the movie for the first 10 minutes will tell you that the director is more interested in producing a piece of art rather than movie.
Second thing to note is this movie has a rather slow pace, and some patience is needed to be rewarded. I got quite impatient about 50 minutes into the movie, due to many unexplained events and the feeling of plot disjoint. But if you stay on for a little while more, things would be explained.
The good about the movie: - Different and unique editing of the movie - Good suspense - Ingenious setting of overall plot background
The mediocre: - Acting was alright, nothing great but not bad either
The bad: - The pacing of the movie could be improved, things move too slowly in the middle - The fast changing scenes could make a person dizzy
My final advice: If you feel you want to see something totally different, try watching it. Otherwise, might want to keep it until you really have some time to kill. But generally, I think the people who will be rewarded from watching are those who likes sci-fi / artistic film.
The Nines (2007)
A little bit too arty
I'd rather call this movie a piece of art rather than a movie (not that movies are not art, but you get my idea). Throughout the entire movie, it feels ass if the director is trying to put up a piece of crafty art for the general public, but I must say that that the final product is a bit too crafty for my liking.
For three quarter of the movie, I'm left wondering what the heck on Earth is this movie all about. The story is really slow and feels draggy. There are parts where I feel is redundant and the reason it is there is just to make the audience more confused. It feels as though the director is deliberately leading the audience round and round the bush just for the fun of it. There are many times where I felt like just shutting the movie off. It is only at the end of the movie where you get to understand the essence of the movie, but I cannot say that it left me with a satisfied feeling.
Don't get me wrong, I am not the kind who hates to use my head. In fact, I'm all for movies that forces me to use my 'little grey cells' and I usually pride myself as one of those who can understand a complex movie before my friends and family but to me, this just isn't one of them. There is just no way for you to make sense out of the movie in the first 3 quarter of the movie. It kind of left me dry as I kept trying to figure out what the hell is going on. The way the movie is renditioned is too convoluted, and it feels as if the director's main aim of this movie is to display how creative and uncontemporary he can be. I do appreciate art to a certain extent, but I think this movie took it a bit too far. There's not really a main message to convey throughout the movie, and the plot is just there to propel the movie, instead of the other way round.
If you're the type that likes to see uncontemporary films, this might be the movie for you.
I rated this a 6 because:
PROS:
- Great piece of art, unconventional
- Audience are given an answer for most of the mystery at the end
CONS:
- Too artsy, feels as if art comes above everything else
- Can't say that I'm totally satisfied at the end, although I get the general plot
- Audience is left confused too long, story is draggy for some part
Bee Movie (2007)
Bad second half and plot with very little depth
I was originally not an animation fan, but Finding Nemo changed my perspective of animation movies. So there I was, sitting in front of the BeeMovie, hoping that it would be just like one of those Pixar quality animation with a deep storyline and great humour.
Sadly, BeeMovie lack the former. The overall plot had a main theme, but it lack depth. The story for the first third of the movie was good, but then it all started to fell apart. The part where our main hero, Barry discovered honey are sold in supermarkets at large quantity was the tipping point, in my opinion. After that, the plot was a bit rough and disjointed, with light jokes filling up the rest of the two third of the movie. It feels as if the production has been rushed and many rough edges unpolished.
The only consolation from this movie was a good ending song, with a decent first third of the movie. The details of a bee hive given in the movie was great, for that I have to give them credit.
For animated films, I think the plot and sound effects of the movie are the main defining point of the movie. Without those, animations would just be not worth watching. BeeMovie did fine with the sound effects, but the plot was a rushed one.
Overall, I think this movie is watchable, but it is nowhere near Pixar quality animation. If you have time to kill, go ahead and watch it, otherwise, skipping this movie really does no harm.
The Man from Earth (2007)
Most thought-provoking film I've ever seen !!!
I don't write many reviews, let alone comments. But this is the one film that compelled me to leave a statement here at IMDb.
I have a habit of checking the IMDb rating before watching a movie. I would read a few summaries about the film before actually getting them, so I would know what to expect to say the least. But this movie just blew me off. I believe the high praises here are would still not do enough justice to such a superb movie. It is just too unique and extraordinary and even these words are mild to describe the movie.
To me, this movie is the pinnacle of intellectual and thought provoking films. The setting of the film is very simple, everything just happens in a small living room. All the suspense and drama; the entire plot is made up of a few talking professors in that room. The entire cast was just so perfect that it kept me glued to screen the entire duration of the movie. The premise of the movie is about a professor who is actually an immortal who have roamed around Earth for 14 000 years. This movie delves into topic such as religion, human emotions, human behaviour, history and art. The ending of it also consist a rather welcomed twist that made the movie a whole great perfect package.
I really didn't think it was possible to make such a superb movie, with just such a simple background. Yet, the depth offered by this movie is so great. I just can't think of any other more words to describe this masterpiece; it is definitely a must watch movie for this decade!
This movie is for: People with an open mind on religious issues, thinkers, amateur philosophers, sci-fi lovers. Recommended age is above 18 years old.
This movie is NOT for: People who will get mad when their religion/belief is put up at stake.
Bridge to Terabithia (2007)
A Movie That Leaves a Concoction of Mixed and Complex Feeling
When I popped the DVD into the player, I was expecting something like everyone else here was expecting, a movie that brings me into the heartland of fantasy and mythical world. But no, this movie is NOT a fantasy-like movie at all.
It is really hard to write a review on this movie. I believe most here already said about the false advertising for this movie on Disney's part, so I'll leave that out and move onto the other point.
This movie is an attempt to build a bridge (literally) between fantasy world and the harsh reality of a teenager life. I think there are still some jagged edge that can do with some polishing in parts that try to glue those 2 worlds together. Nevertheless, it did a good job overall.
I have to say that this movie left me with a concoction of mixed and complex feeling. I feel happiness, sadness, regret, awe, disappointedness, marvel and a whole lot more are all meshed up into a single pulp deep in my heart. It a sense, it is a dark movie, as it deals with death; but on the other sense it is a heartwarming movie where it depicts the wandering mind of a young teenager. It is very hard to name another film that left me with such a mixed up feeling.
I think this movie would only be suitable to those who are above 15 years old. It has quite a mature theme, so don't bring your kids to watch this movie, unless you tell them what to expect in advance.
