Marco Polo (1962)
8/10
A fun adventure movie
10 September 2023
I didn't expect much going in but I found myself quite enjoying it. Rory Calhoun really shines in this role as adventurer. He's just an immense amount of fun as Marco Polo. This is a lower budget Italian affair, but it's done very well with what they had available to them.

Everyone is able and plays their roles well. It's solid technically, with good pacing and editing. You could almost think of it as a B film version of an Indiana Jones movie. The sets and art direction are quite excellent too. Most surprising is that the people of Orient were treated quite respectfully in how they were portrayed give this was made in 1962.

It's definitely one I'll rewatch from time to time.

It's actually pretty funny...
25 August 2023
Honestly, I don't know why this gets so much static. I thought it was pretty good overall. Leslie Jones made the movie for me in particular, she's really funny. Kristen, Melissa and Kat all do similarly good work. Chris Hemsworth really nailed his role.

The only thing I really didn't care for was the cameos from the original Ghostbusters crew. To me, that's the sort of thing that borders on breaking the fourth wall. I really wish when the make films based on an original property they leave out the nods to the past. Just make it something new, like it's in an alternate universe or something and has nothing to do with the original.

The story is fairly meh, but it's a good way to waste 2 hours.

Terrible, disturbing show...
9 January 2023
I understand most humans are selfish trash so I can see why they'd enjoy trash like this. The main cast are made up of people with serious psychological issues. Four of them - Bernadette, Howard, Amy & Sheldon - are case studies in antisocial personality disorder - 3 sociopaths and 1 psychopath. Penny is a promiscuous alcoholic, and Raj and Leonard have major self-esteem issues.

The humor is predicated on personal attacks and backstabbing. With friends like that, who needs enemies? Beyodn that there's also a great deal of humor based on animal cruelty - the two female scientists regularly engaged in the torture and murder of animals and make jokes about it.

If you're an immoral monster you'll probably love this show. For normal conscientious people you'll be deeply offended.

Woke Emo Batman sucks!
28 April 2022
First off, while I like Pattison he's not remotely big and/or menacing enough to play Batman. So far Affleck has been the only guy to really fit the role IMO. Pattison is only 6 foot and weighs a buck seventy wet Where he's officially listed as 6'2 and 210lbs. Throw on another 20 lbs of armor. That's the average size of a linebacker in the NFL.

Beyond any of that the film is slow, it's barely up to snuff on the technical merits - lighting is bad, editing sub-par and it's pacing sucks. It's easily 30 minutes to long with all kinds of extraneous crap in it that should have been cut.

However where it fails, and outright offends, is Hollywood once again pushing their radical leftist agenda and racism and misandry against white men. So Batman goes from psychopathic vigilante to care bear. It's pathetic.

Wake me when they get back to putting out a real Batman.

More like, the Boring Sea
19 January 2022
Watched for half the eps before I called it quits. It's not bad, just boring. It's the virtual equivalent of watching paint dry. I've grown quite fond of the stuff coming out of Korea over the last several years but this one is a definite miss.

From bad to worse...

S1? Pretty good. Pretty true to book. 7/10 S2? Starts getting a fair way off track. 5/10 S3? Nothing to do with the books at all. Just the bloody liberal social justice agenda being shoved down your throat. Avoid like the plague!

And so much American Gods. Stick with the book.

Best new series in a long while....
4 November 2020
I found myself enjoying it immensely. Nick and Simon were on point as always and the rest of the cast were excellent too. Good and not too complicated, or too far-fetched, story line. It was all competently filmed and edited to boot. And most gratefully all the modern day PC crap that ruins shows was mostly absent.

I really hope they can get another few seasons out of this series if they maintain this quality of production.

Project Crap would be a more apt title for this film. Falls sqaurely into the category of 'Well there's X hours wasted I'll never get back.'

What do you get the man that has everything?
19 July 2020
More coke!

Oh man, I haven't laughed like this in a long time. If you didn't come up in the 80s most of this will be lost on you - though you can probably still appreciate it if you're an 80s buff. For those of who did in the big cities in similar environments this like going back in time to that unique magical time and place.

The technical production side of the show hits all its marks. Major props for costumes and set production and design as it's all perfect. And the acting is all top notch too. Don, Regina, and Andrew are simply brilliant in this. And the rest of the cast just help to elevate the entire show. The writing is inspired. So many clever and cute jokes and puns fully referenced for the period.

It may not be everyone's cup of tea but I love it!

Lamebrams ruins yet another property!
15 March 2020
Star Wars was always terrible tripe - with the sole exception of ESB. It's a property that's gone from bad to worse over the decades. Now, with the Lamebrams treatment, it's bad fanfic at it's best.

Companies seriously need to stop hiring that no talent hack. He's only good at destroying things. This garbage falls solidly into the 'Well there's 90 minutes of my life wasted I'll never get back.' Writing, acting, editing, music, all just awful. I'm done with this property. Time to move along.

Star Trek is dead
4 February 2020
CBS doesn't care one whit about Star Trek. And TNG was the last great ST we'll ever have. Now they want to turn it Star Wars. They want a theme park ride when ST is supposed to be about exploration, science, diplomacy. The writing for this thing comes off like bad amateur fanfic.Stick a fork in it, Star Trek is done.

Sabrina the Social Justice Snowflake
11 April 2019
Season one was a bit preachy - as to be expected by liberal Hollywood - but season two has gone into full blown propaganda mode. This puts Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will to shame for sheer propaganda but nowhere near as artfully done.

They demonstrate so clearly the true racism and bigotry of the liberal in America. That those things and form of intolerance are completely verbotten unless directed at the white male, in which case it's not only fine apparently, but actively encouraged. This is perfect demonstration of the Orwellian nightmare that is the PC/SJW liberal groupthink. At virtually every turn there isn't a moment when they're not pushing the extreme left agenda and railing against white men as all categorically evil and insane - even the angels of Heaven are painted as white, almost exclusively male, evil and mad. It's both breathtaking and completely appalling in its scope. Shame on Netflix for funding this extremist left-wing hatred. I'll be cancelling my subscription if they keep this up.

The UA is all wet...well, at least a big soggy
14 March 2019
Don't believe the hype - there are plenty of fake reviews for this series. It's a solid 5/10 kind of show. Not great, but not terrible either. The only two real standouts in this series were Robert Sheehan (did a fantastic job) and Aidan Gallagher (did a good job) everyone else was perfunctory. Ellen Page can't act. She just can't. At least not well. Writing ranged from weak to tepid. Film making was pedestrian at best.

If they have a second season I'd only watch it for Sheehan and Gallagher.

In space no one can hear you yawn...
14 March 2019
Like most others have said, this was just awful. Whilst I haven'r read the novella we all know Martin can write so the problem was obviously with the screenplay and directors. Long winded, padded to hell yawnfest that was supposed to be scary but really only comes off as annoying. This falls into that category of 'Well there's X amount of hours wasted that I'll never get back/'

American Propaganda wrapped up in a heist flick
14 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The oh so noble American warriors tarnishes their image by robbing a drug lord and killing a lot of people along the way. But wait! Then they get stupid, throw away the money and refuse to kill anymore people because that's how redemption works, duh! Acting is on par and the film making itself is up to snuff but the writing for this thing is just nauseatingly bad. Ultimately it's nothing more than Americas patting themselves on the back because they actually believe they're not some of the biggest monsters on the planet when in reality they are. Just more Yankee self-delusion. Great for all those MAGA type idiots,, sickening for the rest of the planet.

Just awful
14 February 2019
First off this isn't Star Trek, It's sci-fi but it's not Star Trek no matter what they call it. And it's really bad sci-fi at that. It's really nothing more than just terrible fanfic. It's preachy social justice tripe. There's exactly one white heterosexual male - who of course was evil in the first season. Everyone else is female and alien - mostly female aliens. The second season is even worse than the first. It really needs to be killed off at this point. I'm simply amazed it hasn't been by this point in time.

While the technical aspects of the production are standard fare they're nothing great. The acting, on the whole, is terrible as well, the lead character especially. For someone who was raised on Vulcan in their tradition she's constantly melodramatic with most of he lines delivered in a breathy whisper. She clearly has no grasp or ability for dramatic acting.

TNG was the last real Trek. I doubt we'll ever see anything again that even comes close to approaching that level of quality in writing and acting. CBS is just flogging the name to make some quick cash. Shame on them. Poo r Gene Rodenberry would be spinning in his grave if he could see how they've trashed his work.

A most excellent drama...
17 June 2018
Nothing extraneous. Everything minimal, to the point and smart. Room for intelligent viewers to draw their own conclusions. It's not a film about the conflict between Palestine and Israel. It's a film about a broken man who isn't seeking redemption but gets a chance at any way. Every one is more or less painted as villain and victim, and that's entirely fair, and entirely accurate. There's no real winning in these sorts of scenarios, just minimizing the damage.

On a technical level it's rock solid film craft all around. All the actors do a good job. Hamm and Pike are perfect for their roles and really nail it. Well worth the watch. I was engrossed from start to finish. So ignore the trolls and obvious shills who are castigating this film for their various political beliefs because it's a damn good film.

Snoring boring....
19 March 2018
The only thing that works for this flick are the visuals which are pretty stunning. Everything else falls down like dominoes. There is no real story, per se. And what there is is poorly written. This is a riff on Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now. They were going for the long slow burn - descent into madness - but it just comes off as boring an unintelligible with plot holes big enough to drive a 747 through. The ending of the film is completely unsatisfying, like the entire rest of the film. And why they even think they needed to dabble in diversity politics is beyond me seeing as there was no point to any of it anyway.

This film falls squarely into that category of film which is, 'Well, there's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back.' As a wiser man than I once said, 'Enjoying wasting time isn't time wasted.' And that is true. Except in cases like this where it isn't enjoyable and really is just wasted time.

Meh...
11 March 2018
Yeah, I think like most of the other reviews I'm in agreement that this isn't bad, but it's not really that good either, just pretty meh. Technically, writing, acting, etc. all could have been a lot better. It's a pretty weak and uninteresting story with weak and uninteresting characters that wasn't filmed all that well. More like something you'd expect from first year film students. The underpinnings are all there but they fail to come together and make what could have been a good crime drama.

Tight and intelligent show...
13 February 2018
I'm concerned for the longevity of this show as it's really only going to appeal to intelligent and educated adults. Just look through the reviews for yourself and you can see that's entirely self-evident between those who appreciate it and those who do not.

The pacing and subtlety of the show make for a taut and realistic interpretation of the intersecting worlds of crime and business in the 21st century. It's wonderfully understated with just the right balance of suspense and realism that provides a really nice suspension of disbelief. I certainly hope we can get a few more seasons out of this. It's not often we see shows of this quality come along. If being spoon fed pablum from the networks is your idea of good entertainment than this certainly isn't for you. If, however, you long for more and appreciated high quality and intelligence, than this may be right up your alley.

Masterfully Done....
23 September 2016
Truly, this film was masterfully done in all of its aspects. As many others have remarked it's quite odd that this film is so underrated and unknown. It's easily Heston's best work, and Schaffner's too. The direction, acting, cinematography, and music all come together virtually flawlessly. For any aspiring film students take note, this is a master class in how a great film is made. It really shows just how powerful a film cam be when done right, and how so many of them are done so woefully bad by comparison.

I love this film for the respect that Schaffner accords the viewer with. His sense of visuals are unparalleled, as directors go. The best scenes in the film are conveyed wholly without words or gesticulation, just pointed looks. It's amazing just how much a look can convey. My favorite scene in the film is where the old woman brings Heston and Forsyth food. He steps out of the room and the old woman into it. We then see closeups of Heston and Boone exchanging looks. Then to the old woman and Forsyth exchanging looks. Four people speaking volumes and not a word being said. Brilliant! This is a deliberate film, both intelligent and thoughtful, treating the viewer as such. I re-watch it once a year at least. I always find it best viewed in the late fall/early winter on a Saturday night, or a blustery Sunday. Usually as part of a marathon with such classics as 'The Lion in Winter', 'Beckett', and 'A Man for All Seasons'. This one however, this one is the real gem and the one I always look forward to most.

A surprisingly good spaghetti eastern
6 April 2011
Let's get down to brass tacks, shall we? In a nutshell it's a pretty damn good east meets west action flick. I don't know why everyone keeps throwing around the word ninja with this film, as it's about 2 warrior clans intent on decimating the other, with one virtually winning it all. A bit slow at parts with the usual tripe about the ultimate badass learning there's more to life than just cutting down one's enemies like so much wheat. However, the it's worth the ultimate, and predictable, payoff in blood, guts, and gore. Not really memorable, but a good way to kill a few hours on a Saturday night or lazy Sunday afternoon. If anything I was surprised to see an actor the statue of Rush in this.

A Japanese Spaghetti Western
5 April 2011
If you liked the Seven Samurai this will be right up your alley. In fact, it's little more than an updated version, and stylishly done at that. If you're looking for a more historically accurate version of late fuedal Japan you won't find it here. If you're looking for good Samurai kicking the bad Samurai's asses, this is your ticket. It's your classic good vs. bad action flick, albeit done with a classical panache. No love interests, no grey areas, just the good guys - vastly outnumbered - versus the bad guys. Beautifully shot, with some amazing action, it'll make you wish you were one of the good guys, taking names and kicking ass too! A rollicking good Japanese spaghetti style eastern.

A solid Anti-Hero flick of the old school...
7 February 2011
It's been a while since we've had a good anti-hero movie of the old school and this, thankfully, is one of them. While maybe not quite up there with films the likes of Payback (still the best anti-hero film IMO) or Get Carter (the original), it does it's job quite admirably. No diversions with a love interest - the ruin of so many great action films over the years - just a solid, well paced movie that's all about kicking ass and chewing gum, and it's all out of gum.

Dwayne really did a great job here being iron hard for most of it, but with hints of vulnerability and pain where it was needed. He's really starting to grow as an actor. I just wish he'd start focusing more on these sorts of films and stay away from the goofy family films. Does he want to be a serious actor or Brandon Frasier? Anyway, he was perfect for the role and knocked it out of the park.

Billy Bob and Carla Gugina were both solid as always. Oliver Cohen and his "wife" were the major weak spots in this film. Not that the acting was bad - nor was it particularly good - but the characters themselves were poorly developed and wrong for this film. While I'm sure he was intended as a foil for Dwayne's character, he was just too over the top, more cartoon-character than actual villain.

Still, all in all, Faster is an enjoyable ride and bound to be one of those films you'll look forward to watching on TV every now and then over the years. Or like myself, once a year I'll just a whole lazy Sunday watching a pile of classic anti-hero films of which this will be one.

P.S. Hollywood take note. It's hard to go wrong with the anti-hero film. Hell, even a straight action film...IF you stick to the action. If I wanted to see a love interest develop I'd go see a date film, OK?
