The Romanoffs (2018)
Ignore the low ratings. This show is as good as Madmen
Some of the reviewers have criticized this show for having nothing to do with the actual Romanov dynasty. That's nonsense because each episode opens with images of the last czar and has storylines that often mention the Russian Romanovs. But it is set in the present day so these Romanovs are living in various parts of the world and they don't have wealth or power.
The show has the same writer as Madmen so you know it's has to be good and it is very good.
I am on episode 3 and so far I love this show.
The Believer (2001)
Wonderful writing and directing
This movie is so well written that not one word is wasted. This movie is very educational and I learned a lot about Judaism. This movie is not pro-Jewish or anti-Jewish. But it is very enlightening about Judaism.
Ryan Gosling is always very intense as an actor. He reminds me of Richard Burton. He's also very good at picking film projects because I can't think of one bad movie he has been in
When I read the storyline for this movie I assumed it would be very good but it blew me away that it could be this good.
Deserted (2016)
Incredibly good movie. Not boring at all
I expected this to be bad but it was actually one of the best survival movies I have seen. This reminded me of The Canyon which is also really good.
The writing and pacing are excellent. The acting is very good. Nothing in the movie is predictable.
The Reagans (2003)
Excellent mini-series on Reagan's Life
Why 5 Stars? This show is excellent. There was great controversy shortly before CBS was set to air this show and they pulled the plug and sold the movie to Showtime. But Showtime is known for high quality shows. They would not buy junk. That's why Showtime bought this show and aired it because it is NOT junk it is excellent.
360 (2011)
Excellent ensemble drama with great acting
This movie has several stories that interweave with each other. Most of it is set in Europe. Why this has only 6 stars amazes me. This reminds me of Shortcuts and it is about as good as shortcuts. I loved every moment of this movie.
Hundstage (2001)
Excellent Movie
I have seen many wonderful German language films and this is one of the best. It's about various characters and their interactions with each other. Many of the reviews say it is depressing. This film is NOT depressing unless you think life is depressing. Some of the characters are rough, some are crazy but that's life.
Terror House (1972)
One of the Best Horror Films I have ever seen
This movie came out long before Jeffrey Dahmer became a cannibal. It's sometimes described as a black comedy but really only the very last scene is comical.
The rest of the movie is quite scary and the creepy old house and creepy old couple really create a kind of gothic atmosphere. The clincher is the cannibalism and the fact that the couple are serving dead houseguests to the other houseguests is where the horror comes in. The guests comment on how strange the meat tastes....good but strange. I have heard that human flesh actually tastes very similar to pork...that's why they use pig valves in heart surgery because pigs are genetically very similar to humans as are apes. So the guests are eating human remains of murdered college girls...and they are none the wiser. The elderly couple are careful to keep the guests out of the kitchen where the bodies are chopped up.
The Great War (1964)
The single greatest documentary on WW1
This BBC documentary came out in 1964 when many of the veterans of WW1 were still alive and this documentary has many interviews with those veterans. That is one of the things that makes this very special.
Another thing that makes this excellent documentary special is the editing and narration by an excellent British actor named Michael Redgrave.
Don't let this gem pass you by. This is definitely the best documentary on WW1.
Der Hauptmann (2017)
Engrossing Drama
This movie is up there with Paths of Glory and All Quiet on the Western Front because it's not really a war movie but rather a movie about the damage that wars inflict upon a society. This entire picture is engrossing and I definitely wanted to see it a second time to better absorb all the powerful scenes.
It's basically a study in the herd mentality of human beings. The nail that sticks out gets hammered as the Japanese proverb says. This movie is a fascinating study in the German tendency pre-1945 to obey authority.
There was a very popular book that came out before WW1 in 1906 about and it even amused the Kaiser because it was a true story about a vagabond who put on a homemade German officer's uniform and managed to recruit soldiers to help him rob a city's treasury in a town called Kopernick. It was later made into a book and play called the "captain of Kopernick".
That is what this movie reminded me of and I very much enjoyed this fascinating study in human psychology. This movie is based upon true events.
Con Man (2018)
Excellent Movie.
I was familiar with the Minkow story and this movie did not disappoint at all. It is well written, fast paced and very entertaining. Don't believe the negative reviews.
Billionaire Boys Club (2018)
Watch the 1987 NBC tv movie version instead
I saw the 1987 TV version with Judd Nelson playing Joe Hunt(he has a bit part as Joe's dad in this).
The TV version was so much better than this cinematic release version. It just goes to prove that money does not always equal quality.
It's hard to find the TV version. Netflix only offers it as request for hold.
I was really hoping this version would be as good or better than the original 1987 TV version but sadly it is not remotely comparable.
The 15:17 to Paris (2018)
why the reviews are so low on Eastwood movie
First of all the first 50 minutes of the movie are not at all about the train attack. They are about the childhood of the three main characters. Elementary school., junior high, and high school. I watched this movie in disbelief that Eastwood would focus on that instead of focusing on the actual attack or on the attacker and his family to show what his motivations were. We get none of that in this movie.
Eastwood is getting very old and maybe he has lost his magic touch with directing movies because this movie is BORING!!.
I hope his next project brings back the Eastwood magic that I am used to.
Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017)
Excellent Movie!
This movie is interesting and engaging from start to finish. The IMDB star ratings of 6.4 is very misleading because this movie makes you think about the law and about humanity. I enjoyed this entire movie. On the extra part of the DVD Denzel Washington says he has made many movies but not many films and that his project was a film. I couldn"t agree more with Mr. Washington. This is a great film and will I think be considered one of his finer projects. The writing was excellent.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
Horrible! Just pure Horror!
This movie was so bad that I wanted to just fast forward thru most of it but instead I suffered through this piece of junk. Oh god how bad can one movie be? This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my 53 years on earth.
Mother! (2017)
horrible movie
I liked this movie until halfway thru...then I absolutely hated it. It was so bad that I fast forwarded thru parts. YUK!!!!
Law & Order True Crime (2017)
Excellent Drama
Anything related to the infamous Menendez case is usually riveting because of the nature of patricide and this NBC production was not disappointing.
It shows the whole drama from the prosecutor's side to the defendant's side. Like all shows connected to the Menendez case it leaves you wondering if the two boys were indeed ever molested. I for one do not believe they were ever molested but some disturbing things were going on in the family like photographing the two boy's genitals. That in itself is strange but does not necessarily indicate child molestation.
The drama does leave you wondering about that other issues such as if the family members could be believed in their testimony.
The Night Of (2016)
Excellent HBO crime drama
This movie gives you a very accurate depiction of the criminal legal system. Some reviewers have criticized the story for being unrealistic and "not real world" in particular as to how the defendant meets the victim. I have to disagree. I thought the story was very believable,
what I liked about the story is how they show what happens to the defendant when they are incarcerated pending trial.
I am only on episode 3 but I intend to watch the entire series because it is so good.
I am very rarely disappointed by HBO productions and this one was no exception.
Bonjour Anne (2016)
well written and fun
This movie should be about a 7 or 8 because it is very well written with good pacing. Not boring at all and a very insightful movie in many ways about relationships. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
I have mostly enjoyed all of Diane lane's movies. Some actors have a knack for picking scripts and even if the movie is not commercial at least you don't leave the theatre thinking you wasted two hours of your life.
Under sandet (2015)
Powerful Danish Movie
Some of my favorite films have been Danish films and this gem did not disappoint! It is a poignant and sad portrayal of the continuing tragedy of war even after WW2 had ended. Young Germans are forced to remove German mines from Denmark but we understand that Denmark also was a victim by having it's beaches loaded with 1.2 million mines...and they had to be removed but how to remove them in a humane way? Man's inhumanity to man and what a powerful story this movie tells. I loved every moment of it.
The Exception (2016)
A semi-fictional account of the last days of Kaiser Wilhelm II
Though this movie is not based entirely on factual events much of this movie is based on true historical data on the last days of German Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II. The house in Doorn, Holland is accurate as is other historical events such as the Nazi troops stationed at his manor.
For students of World War I or German history this movie is a must see.
Unlike Hitler, the Kaiser did have morals and religious views that he held until his death despite being largely responsible for unleashing WWI.
Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei (2004)
Wonderful movie with a lot of heart!
This movie is fantastic. It has a great moral message about materialism and also about loyalty. I just love this movie and I can't think of a better movie I have ever seen except for a mere handful. This movie is not a waste of your time. You might disagree with the characters actions but you will love their altruism. A really great movie.
Moonlight (2016)
This won the Oscar for Best Picture????
I've seen many TV movies that were much better than this was. My mother could not believe how boring the movie was. The movie is only about 97 minutes long and thank god for that because the story moves along at a truly glacial rate and the biggest problem with the movie is that none of the main characters are at all likable.
This movie disappointed me more than Manchester by the Sea. So much for the accuracy of awards shows like the Oscars or the Golden Globes.
So who voted for this movie to get Best Picture of 2016?
Billions (2016)
One of the best shows ever made!
This show is simply excellent all around. From the fantastic aerial shots of the big apple to the tight witty writing and great acting performances this show fires on all cylinders with never a dull moment. Even if you are not fascinated with the ups and downs of wall street this show will entertain you.
The only shows that are remotely comparable are The Americans and Homeland.
Manchester by the Sea (2016)
Slow but has poignant moments
I expected this movie to be better based on the golden globes and Oscar buzz but the fact is that the movie is very slow at times and runs 137 minutes when it could have been edited easily down to 100 minutes. The main character is hard to sympathize with because he is so introverted but that may be because of a tragic event that happened in his life.
Homeland (2011)
Still a great show
Just finished watching season 5 which I thought started slow but I was not disappointed. The Berlin setting is so timely and it really ads to the shows story line because of the focus of terrorism in Europe. Some of the reviews seem to nitpick the show for being factually inaccurate when it comes to foreign languages or foreign cars and locales but keep in mind that a series is produced on a very quick schedule and mistakes are going to happen.
Overall I am still very pleased with the quality of the show's writing and its pace. That's a hard thing to maintain after 5 or 6 years. I can see this show going much longer because like law and Order it will be hard to run out of real news inspired material.
