Deadpool (2016)
Not a great movie, but great fun.
Somewhat obviously Deadpool is not a great movie in the sense of having a lasting impact on the art of cinema, but it is a very well executed and entertaining film that combines action, comedy and romance very successfully. The strength of the film derives from it's well aimed ambition. It doesn't try to be anything it isn't, but does well everything it attempts. In no way does this film transcend it's genre, but it does quite adroitly play with with the genre's limits and conventions. On the whole the film is irreverent and crass, but there are some surprisingly well done sincere moments that give the proceedings some emotional resonance. While I liked the film very much, I'm probably just the kind of person for whom the film was made for. If, unlike me, one shies away from graphic violence, juvenile banter and crude language it might be hard to enjoy the other things that this film has to offer.
Rejected (2000)
My **** is bleeding.
Metaphorically at least. This is one funny movie, it is a wonder that my insides are still in the right place after laughing at this so hard. I'd like to extol its many virtues, but every time I try to start analyzing it, I end up in a giggling heap. Suffice it to say that this is without any question the best and funniest short animation I have ever seen.
To my shame I have to admit to only having seen a pirated version of this great flick, but hopefully one day I'll have the opportunity to see it in its full glory. Since the animation is quite inventive towards the end, it would probably be quite interesting to see the film on a big screen, but alas, no such opportunity has arisen.
King Arthur (2004)
Ouch, that was bad.
I went to see this with a friend having low expectations going in. Well, it was worse.
The action was almost mediocre, but mostly ridiculous. The drama was just embarrassing. As I've seen Clive Owen and Keira Knightley doing passable or even good work before this, I don't blame them. And as I really liked training day it's hard to blame Fuquas directors abilities either. The fault probably lies with the horrid script which was bad all over, but at it's worst during dialog.
In the end the action scenes were nowhere near good enough to make the unimaginative plot or the flat characters worth watching. And when the dialog scenes between Owen and Knightley started, I was looking for the remote to fast forward the movie... in a theater. Nuff said.
May (2002)
An interesting and original movie
The premise of the movie sounded quite absurd when I read the back of the dvd. It is. However in this case it's not a bad thing. The script is good and develops the main character quite believably, so that the absurdity seems quite natural once we get to it. The movie was different from what I expected, but that's just a plus. I was pleasantly surprised, hopefully you are too.
Dreamcatcher (2003)
One of the worst movies I've ever seen
The book is decent and I had some hopes for this movie, but they all crashed within the first twenty minutes. I could expound on the faults of this movie for pages, but I'll spare myself and you. Suffice it to say that decent cinematography and able actors were sabotaged by a horrible screenplay and clueless director. Somehow they were able to turn every character into a moron regardless how the book had described them. And what they did to the ending...........
La haine (1995)
A strong movie about strong issues
I first saw this movie accidentally, while channel surfing. I was actually going to watch a movie on another channel, but my surfing exorably drew me to this one instead. Since, I have seen it again couple of times and the strong impression it made the first time still remains.
It's a movie about not too perfect people in a not too perfect world, told boldly in black and white. The structure of the movie is brilliant, even though it doesn't come apparent until the very end. I could very well rant on about the structure and it's meaning and effect, but since someone who hasn't yet seen the movie might read this, I won't risk spoiling it.
Neverthless I can say that this movie has one of the most surprising and emotionally affecting endings that I've come across. At least for me it left a lot to think about and I hope I'm not the only one.
C'era una volta il West (1968)
West at it's best
One of the best westerns ever made in my opinion. The slow tempo might be offputting to some, but I myself enjoyed it. Sergio Leone's use of rhytm is unique and works so well with Morricone's soundtrack, that the result is close to perfect.
However westerns as a genre are not the most fulfilling of movies for me. Still, my hat off to Sergio Leone. The only name that I can associate with such quality in this genre is, not surprisingly, Clint Eastwood. That is not to say there are no other great westerns, but for some reason my favourites all feature either or the other in some capacity.
However much I might admire the work of Eastwood, I'm no less impressed by the lead performances in this movie. An excellent viewing pleasure all around, but maybe for the more patient audience.
