Your Place or Mine (2023)
Not Good.
There must of been a sale on The Cars music catalogue. Every other song is one of theirs. For no reason at all. Even their phone ring tones has Ric singing.
The two leads are beautiful. They somehow cancel each other out and bore you to death. They have zero chemistry. And they're both at least 10 years too old for their parts.
Steve Zahn (who also has a few lousy songs on the soundtrack) plays an obnoxious gardener. For no reason. His character adds nothing to the script. Which is lousy to begin with. He obviously said I'll be in your unfunny movie if you play a few of my bad songs.
The real star of this film is Ashton's New York apartment.
Full disclosure. I didn't finish watching. Neither should you.
Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)
Iconic
It's all about Audrey. You can't take your eyes off of her. Her singing the academy award and Grammy award winning song Moon River is one of the most iconic scenes in movie history. Her costumes and hairstyle defined a generation. And she defined every girl in New York and New York itself. Her little black dress is legendary. Still
Copied to this day. But no one can wear it like Audrey. Of course the Mickey Rooney character is offensive. Blake Edward's regretted casting him and stated so many times. Truman wrote the part for Marilyn. That would have been a disaster. MM was too fat to play Holly. She would have had to lose 40 pounds.
Bell Book and Candle (1958)
Ain't no Bewitched
Jimmy Stewart was too old. Almost uncomfortable watching him kiss gorgeous Kim Novak who looks like his daughter. She can't really deliver a funny line either and that's also a problem. Great supporting cast including Jack Lemmon, Elsa Lanchester, Janice Rule, Hermoine Gingold and Ernie Kovaks. For jazz fans the Condoli brothers open the movie doing their thing in the Greenwich Village jazz club. This was a hot Broadway show and it took 10 years to translate to the big screen. Cary Grant campaigned for the role. Would have been a better choice even though he was too old also. But maybe they would have had more chemistry than Jimmy and Kim.
NYC and the cat steal the show.
House of Gucci (2021)
The father, son and HOG 🙏
If you, like me, think Valley of the Dolls and Mommie Dearest are the best movies ever made you will love HOG. If that's not your thing you will turn it off after 20 minutes. Gaga is over the top and it's hard to take your eyes of of her. Unrecognizable Leto doing his best John Casale Fredo thing. Pacino in full on Scarface cartoon mode. No one sound Italian. They all sound like they're from Transylvania. Who cares? Instant camp classic.
Love in the Afternoon (1957)
Yuck
Hard to watch Audrey Hepburn and Gary Cooper together. When they kiss you cringe. He was mid 50s and looked 80. She was 27 and when she didn't have some of the worst hairstyles ever to be put on a leading lady she was wearing pig tails which made her look 17. Coop did not look like Audrey's father, he look like her great grandfather. Bottom line is they make a repulsive couple
Peter Gunn: The Young Assassins (1959)
Lili !
I would like to thank the previous reviewer for his nice words for Lili Valentys' performance. She was a close friend of mine and I miss her. I Knew her the last 5 years of her life after meeting her on a bus stop on Hollywood blvd. I have been taping her performances for the last few years every time she pops up. Few actors have been in both an Elvis and Sinatra movie. Lili may be the only. Watched her in Bonanza this morning and then I came across this video (Peter Gunn) which I have never seen. Sometimes I think I'm the only person on earth who is aware of her. She left behind no family. Try and catch her in Lee Grants Tell Me a Riddle. She was wonderful in it. She was wonderful in life. RIP Lili.
