Absentia (2011)
tunnel vision...
I really enjoyed this movie. I was lucky to see it at the Chicago Horror Film Festival. I thought this movie was really well directed, written, and acted. It was a smart film that really grabs you and keeps you interested. I enjoyed how subtle it was and how it built the storyline and character development in a very even and realistic way. I always enjoy good story-telling and this movie really has it. I saw this movie four days ago and yet I keep thinking about it. I keep thinking about that tunnel. There is a tunnel close by my house that looks just like it. Makes me think twice about walking through it... I really enjoy how this movie keeps me thinking. I can't help but wonder what happens to you once the tunnel gets you?
On a Dark and Stormy Night (2010)
I regret watching this movie...
I saw this movie at the Chicago Horror Film Festival and it was not good. I know film festivals are a crap shoot many times but this movie was actual crap. I think it was obnoxious. I think the director thinks he is an artist and better then the viewer. This movie made women appear as disposable, stupid, empty, and as objects. As a women I found this film offensive. This movie is a waste of time and a waste of film. I honestly think whoever wrote or directed this piece of trash really hates women. I wish I never saw this film. My friends and I wanted to walk out on it but decided to finish it so we could have a true and valid opinion of it. I would never recommend this film to anyone. Skip it. I wish someone told me to.
Halloween (2007)
Not the Halloween I Care to Know
Sorry, but this movie fell way short of this girls expectations. I was all willing to let MY Halloween go and just watch and accept but NO. I had a serious problem with the muddled and confusing take on Michael Myers. It upset me and frustrated me that he was not given his respect and was made into a mere mortal. Im sorry, the suspense and mystery was taken away and he stood naked in front of me and Im not okay with what was shown to me. I wasn't scared. I wasn't held in suspense. It wasn't the scariest movie moment to me. It was laughs. It was awkward moments that didn't flow well. I did not like this film, and dammit, I wanted to. Im upset. I feel the director was not clear on his vision. He didn't know what he wanted and I felt the great disconnecct. Damnnit!!! I wanted to like this movie. I really did. Im upset. I feel like it failed on a grand scale and im mad at Rob Zombie. This movie could have been awesome but intstead im left with anger and frustration. Damn. It really wasn't good.
Zombie Nation (2004)
Worst Movie Ever
I really hated this movie. The cover of the box and the title were very misleading. I could barely stand to finish the film, matter of fact, I don't think that I did. It was stupid, the story made no sense. The sets were cheesy as can be. The actor was just awful and at times painful to watch. The makeup was a joke, it reminded me of halloween and little kids doing their own makeup. Don't waste your time watching this movie. It was just awful. Nothing redeeming about this feel. I love a good cheesy flick but this was just bad. Stay away from this movie. I wish I had read the comments on this before I wasted my time and money on this junky movie.
Rocky Balboa (2006)
I Loved This Movie
I have always been a huge Rocky fan, huge. Even if some of the movies were not very good, I would try to find something that would redeem them. A quote, or a moment in the movie that just stood out to me. I was never a hater like some people that claim to be Rocky fans. This movie was everything I wished that it could be. It was great. If you are a Rocky fan you will love this movie. The humor is there, the sweetness is there, and the sadness is there as well. We see Rocky as a fractured man, we see him simple and at times very sad. His heart is always true and we get what I think most of the other films lacked, the heart that Rocky 1 had. I left this movie feeling very happy and excited with a tear in my eye. I am a true fan and Stallone ended the Rocky series on a very high note. I recommend this movie if you believe in the underdog and if you have heart.
Dead Famous: Alfred Hitchcock (2005)
You can see a ghost...
Oh my goodness. In this episode you can totally see a ghost of a child. It'a amazing. Not really amazing because they even tell you that you can see the ghost of a child. The part that is truly amazing is that you can see the ghost of a woman right next to that of a child. There is no way that it is a picture or anything, it is so obvious that it is a ghost. I had DVR'd the episode and had been watching with my friends. One of them got up to use the bathroom and we paused it. You can see the ghost of the child which they hardly even make much of a real reference to, but you can really see the ghost of a grown woman standing right next to him. It's so creepy. I have seen it many times and so have my friends. I am so not making this up and if you ever catch this episode check out the scene where they even mention the child ghost, the woman ghost is right next to him very clear. It's so creepy.
Hostel (2005)
I could have done without all the naked chicks...
I really really liked this movie. I didn't think I would in the beginning when all you see are some dumb guys chasing around women just so they can score. That got old quick but it establishes why these horny idiots would travel for some tail. I wasn't sure what to expect with this movie since most other reviews seem to only focus on the obvious things like gore and torture. Yes, the movies does have these uncomfortable gruesome moments in it but it is done in a way that I don't believe glorifies the violence but shows how sick and depraved people can really be. I mean the idea that people would pay to torture and kill innocent people makes you sick to your stomach. The fact that it's a club where you get a tattoo once you join is so gross. The moments that truly made me sick and nothing to do with the actual moments of violence. It's the moments where the guy says to be careful you could spend all your money in there, gross. The moment when the nut job is asking him if he should do it fast or slow, awful. Those were the moments that will leave a knot in your stomach. The joy that these monsters get in torturing people is just awful. I would recommend this film but not for the weak. It really has some gross moments in it and it leaves you feeling very uncomfortable but I still recommend it.
Dead Men Walking (2005)
Very interesting story but...
I really enjoyed the idea for this movie. It was smart and a new take on the Zombie genre. If only this movie had a real budget I believe it could have been really good. There were too many moments where you could feel that the story got lost in the execution. I really hated the moments when they were shooting guns and there was little to no kick back, they edited in the flash from the gun, and you could not see cartridges or used bullets falling. I am no gun expert but if I notice that than many other people will see that as a big flaw. I enjoyed the humor in the movie provided by Sweeney and his unhappiness in shooting staff. I thought having the Wardens kid in the film was useless and very unrealistic. What father would let his kid come visit him in a maximum security prison all alone? That was nuts. I did enjoy the opening scene where he is fighting off the Zombies and just as he kills the last one he gets arrested by the police. That was realistic to me. I mean, how do you explain the situation and actually think people are going to believe you. I would recommend this movie for the story alone. They definitely needing more money to make this a better picture but I still think it's worth seeing.
Hide and Creep (2004)
I thought it was really funny....
I love zombie movies and I always appreciate seeing someones take on the zombie genre. This wasn't an excellent film by any means but it was funny and I really liked what they tried to do. It had some creative moments in it which now a days that is all you can really expect from a zombie movie. I know I just want to see something that I have not seen a million times already and I believe with this movie there are some real fresh moments. I would definitely recommend this movie not because it's perfect or wonderful, but because it's funny and has some new zombie moments in it. I really enjoyed the idea that Zombies are afraid of the dark. I don't recall ever seeing that before in a zombie film and it actually makes some sense. It removes the fear of the night and actually gives you a safe feeling. The quality isn't perfect so when you rent it do not expect top of the line Romero style Zombies, it's an Independent Film and it shows.
Land of the Dead (2005)
Awesome installment of the dead series...
I loved this movie. It was exactly what I wanted it to be. I am such a Dead fan that I had very high expectations as to what I wanted this movie to be. It met and exceeded all my expectations. It was funny, gross, bloody, smart, a true classic. I cannot wait to own this movie and add it to my collection. I would definitely recommend seeing all of Romero's other Dead films in order to understand the World that he has to wonderfully created. Romero is a true genius who still makes the movies that make us think and gross us out. I have to say I really think this is his best work to date. Dawn gets a lot of credit but I believe Land to be the true classic of the Dead series. I loved this movie and I highly recommend it.
Suspiria (1977)
Not Scary
I was so excited to have tracked this movie down. I heard nothing but great things about it. It had been on so many critics "scariest movies" list. I had to see, I just had to. I wish that I never did. I don't get what all the hype is. It's not scary. It's just an okay try at a horror movie. There were a few real dumb hard to swallow scenes. I love scary movies, I love dramas and all kinds of movies. I just did not like this movie at all. Don't believe the hype. Yawns Ville!
The Sixth Sense (1999)
A beautifully crafted ghost story
This movie was never scary to me. It was always just sad. Don't get me wrong, I really loved this movie. I was just able to allow myself to see deeper than a few scares. Like all good ghost stories, once you peel away the fear of the unknown, there is a story of sadness. Of life cut short. In most good ghost stories, the ghost's need our help and reach out to us. The fear comes from our reaction to them. They are the dead who have no voice and are trapped. This movie is a beautiful portrait of sadness. It also had a wonderful relationship between a mother and her son. She cannot reach him, she is the only person that thinks he's normal, he will never let her know how different he is. They, just like the ghosts, have no way to communicate with one another. There is love and small moments of joy that they share but always under a blanket of sadness. I love this movie because it tells us a story. A good story about a scary subject but puts a new twist on it. It reminds us how sad and lonely ghosts can be, and how much they need us, and how we need them. It shows us that sadness does not end with death, we can carry with us always. Sometimes we just need someone to set us free.
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
The Royal Treatment
I loved this movie. It was so well written, acted, and directed. I have never seen a film like this before. It cannot be compared to any other movie, it stands alone. Gene Hackman was brilliant, I adored his day with his grandchildren. Anyone that loves hidden treasures will love this film. When I first saw this movie, there were two other people in the theatre, I thought that meant it would be awful. I never knew how how wrong I would be. I laughed and cried during this movie. I did not want it to end. Most movies I sit that and look at my watch wondering when will it ever end, I was sad when this was over. Go see it, you'll love it. It was great fun!!!!
Monsoon Wedding (2001)
A true delight
Very few movies include you. Most movies keep you away, you are distantly watching, wondering if you will be included. This movie invites you into the lives of this family. You experience the highs and lows with them. The intimate moments with a husband and wife in bed together, his vulnerability completly exposed, it's beautiful. I loved the music so much I ran out and bought the soundtrack. The music is perfectly placed and created an exciting wedding feel. Weddings aren't always happy and perfect, how can they be when the whole family is together. Drama and caos always follow. But it's nice to know that happiness prevails. I loved this movie and can't wait to own it.
Vanilla Sky (2001)
Not Just a Dream
***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** It really bothers me that people have such a hard time with this movie. They hate the end because they think it's only a "dream." The movie begins with, Sophia saying, "open your eyes." I don't take this as wake up, it's only a dream. To me it's something David needs to do in his life. He is half awake not really understanding consequences of his actions. His a rich spoiled man that imagines the world as his playground. This is easily done, since everyone allows him to function this way. He only knows the sweet, his friend is constantly telling him that it doesn't taste as good without the bitter. David's life is charmed, he needs to open his eyes and have some real responsibility. He treats Julie like crap, but only because she lets him. Everything that happens is because people let David act the way he does. Suddenly, David's world is not what it seems. If you just want to use the phrase, "it was all just a dream," fine, go ahead, but it's more than that. He had an opportunity to "dream" all the perfect dreams that he wanted to. To have a life with Sophia, a perfect life with a woman that for one night helped open his world up. Instead, he lets his sub conscience play nasty tricks on him. He cannot have the perfect life with Sophia, because he does not believe he deserves it. He gives himself a serious case of the "bitters" in order for him to understand how sweet life really was. The movie gives us, the audience what we need, an explanation. He ties up all the loose ends for us and yells at us to open our eyes. Everything David did had consequences, he was protected from them because he had money. Julie took that comfort away from him when she drove her car of the road. She shattered his perfect world and in her own way, screamed, Open Your Eyes. His eyes seemed slammed shut for such a long time. I loved this movie, everything about it. It was well acted, I usually don't like Penelope but she was very likable. The idea that true love can exist is so sad when you realize how much it will always haunt Sophia. What would have happened if David never got into that car. Would he and Sophia had been together? Would Julie still have killed herself? David would never be able to open his eyes if his face and world weren't shattered. I recommend this movie to anyone that believes in the possibility of true love and the idea that everything we do, small or huge has an impact on someone else.
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
A great Zombie movie
I loved this movie and not because it's a great horror film, which it is, but because it makes you think. What if this really happened? What the hell would you do? You can't help but feel trapped while watching this movie. Is the getaway real, or only temporary? Where do you go to escape the dead? You can't help but think of what you would do in this situation. I love the line,(not an exact quote), "When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth." It makes you pause for a moment, especially when you pass by a cemetary in a large city and realize how damn scary it would all be. The one thing you have to remember is, these aren't monsters, these are people. It's us, our friends our family, that's what makes this truly scary. I know a lot of people hate this movie but they should give it another chance. It's gross, it's scary, it's funny, and it makes you think.
