Melancholia (2011)
Once again, history repeats itself!
I just saw a trailer for this. Before I saw the title I said "Oh, this is that movie ANOTHER EARTH" that I heard about but forgot to watch.
NOPE! This is a DIFFERENT movie that just happens to be 1. A foreign movie 2. Made in 2011 & 3. the plot is an emotional drama tied into the history shattering event of another planet being discovered that is just like Earth (a blue planet).
As they teach us in High School, history tends to repeat itself as quite often these types of movies come out in pairs in the same year.
Off my head I remember Armaggedon/Deep Impact, Dante's Peak/Volcano and now Melancholia/Earth 2.
I still want to watch both but I often laugh at how the same plot goes through different movie studios within a similar timeframe.
Animal Kingdom (2010)
Most of the situations seemed unrealistic
Most of the situations in the film seemed absurd. It's hard to imagine a group of cops walking up to a robbery suspect in a crowded parking lot, in the middle of the day and blowing his brains out! That maybe happened 100 years ago in the wild west but I can't imagine that happening now unless they tracked down a cop killer or somebody of that nature...but a bank robbery suspect? Unrealistic.
The 2 uncles killing random cops is illogical, if they focused on the armed robbery department that would at least make some sense.
Killing the main character's girlfriend was really stupid, she didn't know anything nor did she seem nervous around them so that was a waste plus it obviously was going to pit him against his uncles. If you want someone to be quiet WHY would you tick him off by killing his girlfriend? My guess at the ending was the kid was going to blame everything on the uncle who killed his girlfriend (as a witness in court) and help spring the younger uncle free so only one of them would stay in jail. The Grandma hinted at being more concerned about the younger son than the older one who initiated most of the "sins" anyways. I was wrong but at least the older uncle got what was coming to him in the end anyways!
The Rose (1979)
One of the greatest performances ever, Midler raised the bar!
Bette Midler was fascinating in this movie which you can pick up at Target for ONLY $5.50! I agree with the earlier reviewer that there is 20+ minutes of footage that could've been axed like her singing in the gay club and the side story with the old lesbian lover which never truly developed. Another stale, uncomfortable scene was her in the phone both trying to get through to the stadium. Great idea but way too long.
I watched (listened) to some of the director's comments and he OR the film NEVER explain the beginning/ending of the movie with people looking horrified at a big montage of photos including her and other males. WHAT IS THIS ABOUT? Was that her parent's house? Was it a stalker/obsessed fan? Why are they disturbed? That really irks me as I'm confused about this, if ANYONE can explain this please do! Am I going to have to contact the director? I saw this for the first time since I was 7-8 years old, I had a fuzzy memory that she took the downward spiral, went into seclusion and then came back with a roar singing THE ROSE in concert ending the movie. Obviously I was wrong in what I remembered but the touching song was played in the end causing me to cry as it did when I was a child :-( I'm also curious why she didn't sing it as "her" song in the movie? This might've seemed cheesy to some but it would've bee more powerful to me.

House of Wax (2005)
Great Gore & suspense....but NO Paris touching wax and saying THAT'S HOT!???
I saw a sneak preview of this Tuesday night with a group of friends and we had a blast! After seeing sneak peaks for BOOGEYMAN (Horrible! 3/10) and Amityville Remake (so-so 6/10) I enjoyed this a lot more! As seen in the trailer, one knock I had was believing that a whole town could be "forgotten" but this is a cheesy popcorn horror movie so I accept it for what it is.
My only major complaint is I assumed Paris Hilton would touch wax or get dipped etc. and moan "that's hot" but they didn't do that (how could they resist???).
There is NO nudity from the 2 girls although Paris looks great in her lingerie! I'm surprised they didn't put a 3rd "hot token victim" in the movie for some needless nudity which is the norm for this type of flick! I won't list any death or plot spoilers BUT I will say that Paris & Eliza both get roughed up good!
The characters are developed decently and are somewhat likable (not like Cabin Fever where you wanted them to die) and the movie has a decent pace although nothing happens in the 1st 30 minutes like most horror films.
I give it a 8/10 as it delivered good scares and gore and I had low expectations going into it. If you go with some friends that like cheesy horror movies you'll have a good time.

Boogeyman (2005)
Hey Boogeyman...get back in the CLOSET! Puzzling, slow stinker of a horror movie
After wasting 2 hours of your time seeing this "horror" movie you will be asking yourself WHO is the Boogeyman, WHAT happens to his victims, WHY does he exist, WHERE did he come from, WHEN did he come into being? Look at most other similar movie bad guys like Jason, Freddy, Michael Myers etc. and most of these questions are answered! The positives of the movie were the cinematography was good and the look was very spooky. It was a little silly that FOG was lingering EVERYWHERE though! The acting performances were also well done but good acting can't tow a crummy, slow story.
The movie took too long to develop and we didn't see much Boogeyman until the end of the movie.
A lot of the scares were cheap audio spikes in the theater similar to everything being quiet and when a cat jumps out there's loud music jolting you for 2 seconds. This happened CONSTANTLY! This type of movie is right up my alley but I was upset after seeing this! It had potential and with a little more imagination it could've been very scary and fun.
TOO BAD this was a stinker! I gave it 3 out of 10 only because 1 and 2 are reserved for direct to video schlock.

Constantine (2005)
Tense, witty supernatural thriller better than I expected
Before seeing the movie I was wary with Keanu Reeves as the main character and the special effects didn't look great in the trailer.
I saw a sneak peak last night (owning POP CULTURE PARADISE which is near a major University I get many preview passes for myself and customers).
Reeves did a good job in the movie, his facial expressions and attitude were great. He wasn't the best choice for the movie, someone with a rougher looking face and a deeper voice should have been picked but that's not his fault.
I won't give any movie info away as it's not needed to say how I felt about the movie.
All you need to know is the action is fast paced, the story makes sense, the computer animation isn't the best but it doesn't bog down the movie, it uses religion nicely without being preachy and not being overly offensive to conservatives (how many times do I have to see a movie where the only person mentioning God is a deranged pervert/psycho etc...).
I will state that although I own a comic book store I have never read any HELLBLAZER comics but loyal readers at the screening told me they loved the movie. I heard a few "it was OK...." but nobody thought it was garbage.
I saw 2 free early release movies in the past week, #1 was BOOGEYMAN (I was excited to see this) and it was HORRIBLE! #2 was CONSTANTINE (I was a little wary of this one) and I was surprised how good it was compared to the latter! I will march into the Boogeyman page and destroy that one shortly! I'm still upset about my 2 hours wasted with that one :-(
Resurrection (1999)
When all the New Releases are gone try this!
I was impressed by this movie considering it went straight to video. I first knew of the film from an ad in Mexico and I was curious what it was because I never heard of it in the U.S.
The movie poster in Mexico was a lot better than the DVD cover here and made the movie more appealing to the eye.
It's obviously not a great work of art but if you like Silence of the Lambs style movies you will probably want to at least rent it.
It's sort of hard to find on DVD for purchase (Columbia House no longer has it) but it should be somewhat easy to rent.
Trust me, there have been WORSE movies that made it to the theater for $9 a ticket!

They (2002)
While not a "classic" this is still a creepy supernatural thriller
This movie is getting hammered left and right which surprises me after viewing it. I thought it was scary, creepy, and suspenseful through the whole movie. While it's true that the movie doesn't explain what or why THEY exist it does what it's meant to do....creep you out! People boo hoo in other reviews stating "whah, whah, we don't get a nice neat explanation as to why the creatures are here and where they came from", think about it.....how would any of the characters in the movie gain these "clues" or "information"? It's not like one of the creatures would leave a book behind or talk about their motives! I guess most people can only enjoy this type of movie if it A. explains the origin of the terror B. explains their motive C. exploits their weakness & D. shows the character triumph in the end.
I enjoyed guessing wether everything is real or mental and the bleak but eerie ending answers that! I DID NOT like the alternate ending on the DVD which p***es on the audience and says "the last 90 minutes was a delusion of a mental patient, SUCKER!!! NYAH NYAH, there are no monsters!" That ending would've made the beginning pointless (and the whole movie). The alternate ending has also been done several times in other movies which would've made it more lame! The normal end was perfect to me.
THEY didn't have any gore or action fight scenes but that actually makes it more creepy, you see the creatures for a split second and they attack swiftly, quietly and efficiently.
This movie reminds me of a '90s comic called Dark Dominion (I believe) in which there is a parallel world of demons and certain people can cross over into it.
Why do some movies always arrive in the studio with an evil twin? (examples: Volcano-Dante's Peak, Leviathan-Deep Star Six, Armageddon & Deep Impact) This and Darkness Falls ARE twins....must stay in the light, a drawer full of batteries, etc. Darkness Falls (just like Jeepers Creepers) went downhill when the creature is seen by EVERYONE in the police station which makes it more like a Godzilla type of monster.
The DVD could use some more features, but I will definitely buy it once the price is right. If your looking for a creepy thriller to see at night go ahead and rent this movie!
