Bigfoot (2012)
Cheese would have been OK, but stupid drags it down
I was looking forward to the intentional cheesiness of the Partridge vs. Brady hype, but the movie just has too many stupid people doing stupid things that no real person would do. Ruined the fun for me. Also, since when is Bigfoot supposedly bigger than a house and yet could still never be found? And when did he start ripping people apart and eating them?
As the story went on, it just seemed like people in that community had been doing stupid things for maybe a century. No one could ever put 2 and 2 together and make 4.
At least Danny Bonnaduce realizes that his career is made up of playing some silly version of himself and glories in it. Poor Barry Williams has to play his role straight-faced and serious, trying so hard to make a glaring eye look more glaring and intense by keeping it glaring longer and twisting his inherently droopy face. I think he got the bad end of the deal on this one.
I had hoped for a good bad-movie-night film, but it's so much worse than that. Makes me sad. This could have been done with the right attitude and just a small grain of intelligence and been fun.
Hobo with a Shotgun (2011)
I really wanted to enjoy this, but...
I went in with the right attitude. This was a purposely crafted exploitation film. I believe I had the right level of expectations for that. But I must say this was so completely unbelievable, so poorly made, and had such obvious special effects that didn't even look like human tragedy, that I couldn't even enjoy it on the level of absurdity. In contrast, I loved the movie RUBBER. If I could appreciate RUBBER, I certainly could have enjoyed this if it was worthy of it.
I can appreciate over-the-top, bizarre entertainment for what it is, but, for me, HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN attempted to have extremes (which just looked fake) alongside some humanity and heart for several characters. This made the dichotomy seem even greater. I understand that people will suffer an SOB who has power and the threat of violence against them, but the bad guy in this film would have been overthrown and killed long, long ago if only a handful of residents wanted to do him in, let alone the entire population.
Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)
The best horror movie sequel ever
PA1 and PA2 dovetail so exquisitely that they are really two parts of the same movie, like Kill Bill 1 and 2. I literally leaped up in my seat once or twice and thoroughly enjoyed the scares, along with the leading tension.
If you loved PA1, I think you will love PA2. If you only liked PA1, you will probably like PA2 even better, although I am not necessarily saying it's a "better" film, per se -- it just makes the story and background of PA1 so much more complete that you will understand PA1 much better in retrospect. If you hated PA1, you'll probably hate PA2, because it is truly faithful to the feel of PA1, even though it also has its own unique feel at the same time.
While PA2 won't convert PA1-haters, those who enjoyed PA1 will be pleased to hear that the BLAIR WITCH sequel curse has been broken!
