Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992)
all viewers from this culture give highest ratings in some strange exhibition of solidarity
Wow, this is absolutely terrible movie. IMDb allows you to explore the world outside of mass culture and lets you get exposure to true cultural diversity. I am huge admirer of IMDb and use it a lot to research wonderful foreign movies. But, sometime you get surprise like this one. This movie is clearly not in range of almost 9 stars. 4 stars it could get ONLY if all viewers from this culture give highest ratings in some strange exhibition of solidarity. 1-2 stars is too high for it unless you need that cultural diversity. Who, in right state of mind, give it more than 1 star, is only question that keeps you watching past 15 minutes. To watch it to the end is too ambitious of a task. Avoid this movie unless you are doing research on psychology of IMDb users.
The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising (2007)
Movie has several major shortcomings, but was excellent in all other aspects.
Movie has several major shortcomings, but was excellent in all other aspects. Graphics perfect, camera work amazing, rhythms is pair with some of the best movies I have seeing, movie took me out of everyday life for hour or so, and was very enjoyable, but: 1. Alexander Ludwig acting is very uneven, it goes from amazing to fake and back. When Alexander acts boy of his age that goes from school to home I believe him 100 percent, when he tells lord of darkness that he is the one who will restore the balance of light and dark, it is almost pathetic. 2. Movie is very predictable. Garry Potter movies have second story line designed to appeal to adults, these one goes only for one audience: no jokes, no comedian in supporting actor role, no hints for adults. Movie is designed for children and for children only. Garry Potter movies have second story line, these one is not. 3. No solid ending. First two thirds of the movie is much better than last third. It almost like actors was waiting for movie to end. Movie has several major shortcomings, but excellent in all other aspects.
The Prestige (2006)
What can I say, wow!
What can I say, wow! I almost missed this movie in theaters. I looked at number of reviews and got a sense that this movie is about obsessed magician revivals, and how important professional life to those who care. Yesterday, while rearranging my Netflix queue I noticed to my surprise that movie is one of 250 best rated movies. So after short research I found one theater where movie was still playing. Movie certainly was worth the effort. It is somewhat similar to "Usual Suspects", but better since, I can much easily associate myself with magician then with criminal. I tracked at least three nested stories, it has absolutely unexpected ending, and movie is very logical if you analyze it afterward. Scarlett Johansson acting was average but other actors just took me there. I believed every word. If you can still catch it in a theater, go, and if not happy DVD viewing.
Apocalypto (2006)
Movie is very strong, yet it is very unpleasant.
Movie is very strong, yet it is very unpleasant. It is similar to "Braveheart" or "The Passion of the Christ" (better then "The Passion of the Christ" and worse then "Braveheart"). Before the movie, I went through number of reviews on IMDb. Many hate reviews had a point to it and movie is excessively bloody. True, but the way I see it, Mel Gibson is trying to show us how he feels about media ganging up on him. I guess it is very, very difficult to be the target of major discreditation campaign. Movie has none existing storyline. True, question is whether or not you are going to like that. I liked it a lot. Movie keeps you on the edge of a seat by other means. Movie is not a documentary about Maya kingdom, true, and it is not pretending to be one. Spaniards at the end of the movie is totally out of place, true, and I can say that this is one thing that I did not like about the movie. Movie is extremely powerful and once you see it, you will remember it, shortcomings are rather minor. If it would not be for all that bad press, movie would be a major hit. To reiterate once again movie is powerful, unforgettable, beautiful, but it is not pleasant.
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)
On IMDb this movie is rated as high as Kubrick? Are you people crazy?
We have a winner! One of the worst movies made in a really long time. It takes a lot for me to leave in the middle of the movie but in this case leaving the theater was similar to leaving a really dirty restroom you really glad when you can breathe air that has not sh1t flavor to it. I never knew that I have a low tolerance for bodily humor but jokes about sh1t or ur1ne provided entertainment for the audience every five minutes or so. Someone sh1ts in front of building in New York, someone sh1ts in the car, someone washes face in a toilet, someone ur1nates in river while other person washes face in it, someone gets a plastic bag with sh1t to a diner table and asks a host to wipe his behind. Countless jokes about child molestation, for example "when I got my wife she had assho1e like 7 years old, but now she is 15 and she is not like she used to be". After each scene with sh1t or child molestation or incest, movie provide justification such as main character hate Jews. By the middle of the movie I clearly understood that anti-Semitic people are extremely poor, sh1t everywhere, molest children, speak bad English, drink from a toilet, enjoy incest, encourage relatives to be prostitute, rape women and small animals. What I don't understand is why do I have watch all this. To hate immigrants? To hate anti-Semitic people? To laugh at poor? If poverty is so funny why don't you make great comedy about Africa? On IMDb this movie is rated as high as Kubrick. Are you people crazy?
The Da Vinci Code (2006)
This is not your typical Hollywood movie; fanatics in audience.
The Da Vinci Code is a great movie and very close to the book. Acting is absolutely amazing I believed every scene. Applause at the end of the movie was unexpected since several viewers were trying to deliberately ruin the movie by making snoring noises and loudly telling to each other how boring this movie is. So you can safely assume that you will see some fanatics that will try to spoil your movie experience. If you are not familiar with at least some of the historical facts discussed in the movie you will have a hard time following the logic of it. This is not your typical Hollywood movie and it is better then the book in many aspects. Book was trying to capture the audience by clever tricks and movie was trying to show unusual insight on human history.
