The American Dream.
27 January 2023
It's always a pleasure to see racist rednecks and Nazi types meet their maker. In this they go down by the dozen! The film is generally anti-racist, and is an indictment against the greatness of the nighty USA.

For the most part this is a nail-biting ride. We can take it politically with regards to race relations, and the ending had me cracking up. I wont spoil the excellent ending :)

I'm guessing the main Caucasian character was cured of his racism by the end of this. He's set up at the start, and to be honest, more character development on him and his torn beliefs would have enhanced the exploration of racism themes. If his journey of transformation were larger part of the film it would have been much more interesting.

But I guess they have to focus on the shooting and explosions, this being a Hollywood film...

Misleading.
6 December 2022
Their bottom line here is that ALL non-hoaxing abductees are suffering false memory syndrome. I don't buy it. It's a pretty naive and uninformed commentary on the subject. I'm sure that some people are suffering delusion and false memories, but not all of them. Some of these people are being interfered with, but who is doing it is the question.

Their suggestion that Travis Walton was also suffering 'false memory syndrome' would be disputed by the 6 witnesses who saw the unidentified flying object knock him out. Sure, the parts he recalls while inside the craft may not be accurate, or they may be, but getting zapped by the craft certainly did happen. They chose the wrong 'abductee' to pick on there. Shallow research by the filmmakers. They needed to pick an abductee with no witnesses to back up their theory.

The history books - they lied.
13 September 2022
Great flick for everyone, especially kids. I love how the animosity between the beasts and human kind is based upon lies laid down in history books by past authorities. This is an essential concept to pass onto children. So as they can learn to question things they read, particularly our real world 'his'-story.

At present, China has initiated a campaign to whitewash the history of Hong Kong from the citizens minds, with children being their primary targets. Similar has happened with disinformation from Catholics about the extent of murder and cruelty in the crusades, and by the Indonesian authorities on the true perpetrators and events that consisted the 1966 genocide in Indonesia. The list goes on.

Always question Authority.

Less than loosely based on Hynek.
21 August 2022
Well made sci-fi drama, but it unfortunately has little to do with Hynek and any kind of real ufo investigations. They said they based the show on real cases. Unfortunately, they've diverged so far away from said cases that even the essence of the original cases are gone. These stories are baloney compared with the real world events they are meant to be 'based' upon.

So, we just have some decent sci-fi here. Enjoy.

If you are curious, do your own investigation. But do avoid the rantings of a group of want-to-be intellectuals that label themselves 'the skeptics'. You might encounter this mob when trying to find out more about UAP. You wont find much truth from them. They are de-bunkers, not truth seekers. De-bunkers are cherry pickers. They're a fundamentalist extremist group who cherry pick and then present only the data which matches their predetermined beliefs. They're basically a blight upon logic and reason.

The best way to go about finding out more is listening to witnesses. This is because the traditional scientific method isn't a good fit for ufo research. Why? Not enough data is available from a scientific perspective, and thus not enough data is available to form 'scientific evidence' based theses. This is partly because the ufo is elusive and rare, and partly because the whole subject has had a shroud of absurdity thrown upon it, resulting in barely any scientists willing to touch it.

With not enough scientists working on it and publishing, here we circle back to the reason for there being not enough data!

Whomsoever is behind the ufos has maintained a firewall between them and our mainstream knowledge. So, you need to investigate the matter yourself.

Happy hunting :)

Style getting in the way of clarity.
10 August 2022
After the 1000th person got killed I was wondering when this will end.

Ultimately, a little boring toward the last third. Clever scenarios, interesting camera work and impossible but generally impressive stunts. But it goes on and on and on with a plot which is simplistic and sometimes confusing.

A primary issue was rickety camera work. Sometimes it was smooth, but much of the time shot stabilization wasn't implemented. Then combine this with the bizarre use of dropped frames, you get a highly annoying view of the action which often obscured the reading of what was going on.

Sure, have some crazy shaky hand held, but give the audience a rest with a higher proportion stable action images between the shaky parts.

It's an impressive effort but style was getting in the way of clarity.

Great idea.
18 July 2022
Even though the scope of such an idea asks us to venture beyond the setting of one area and perhaps expand to other parts of the town or even the world, the film-makers did well with the chosen set of spaces. Likely because of the harmonious casting and well knit story. A fine thriller.

Lots of Tension
10 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The series is about a puke-worthy cult. I've not finished all episodes yet so will update this review when so. But I'm sitting here waiting the FBI to come and arrest the perpetrators or for someone to come in machine-gun them down. It's frustrating seeing such brainwashing so well illustrated. I want them to go down so bad.

It's so close to home with the brainwashing that happens in our world, brainwashing that happens in regular mainstream social groups even, usually without people even realizing it, not only in classically defined 'cults'.

Well made, but boy is it frustrating !!

Incredibly worthy ride - dont read or watch anything about it before.
3 May 2022
This story is powerful. I had little idea of what was going to transpire, I even had no knowledge of what the characters were really like, which made the twists and turns evermore thrilling.

A good result of my practice of never watching trailers or reading reviews before seeing a film. Just watch this. It contains some nasty needless violence but the innovation of the story eclipses that.

Hyperrealistic.
2 May 2022
While it was on it's cinema run a saw it four times. One of the most powerful films in existence. The story grabs you hard from the first scene and doesn't let go. An astoundingly cohesive work. Direction, script and acting are harmoniously united, plus the input from the rest of the team. Feels like there's a fair bit of improvisation in this.

Gary Oldman has said he had to get this out of his head. Well Gary, you got it out good and proper. Gary, I hope you are the better for it and thanks for communicating to us how things were in the environment of your younger years.

We had a family remember succumb to the drink and it isn't pretty, as you've so accurately illustrated.

Change and Lament.
1 May 2022
A highly poetic treatise on how one can feel if they succumb to letting fine memories of their glorious past hinder their present. The shooting style of this film is hyper-realistic.

The time span is epic, covering the characters childhood in detail all the way through to the present. The editing style flips between points of time in such a beautiful way - I've not seen memories and scenes blended with such perfection in any other film. Flashbacks usually bother me in films, but here they didn't. It reminds me of Nicholas Roeg's style.

An efficacious look across time into the innermost world of a man and the universe surrounding him. Outstanding storytelling.

Fighting Lessons.
1 May 2022
Watching the fights in this is like being at boxing or martial arts class, and watching the instructors clinically demonstrate the various moves. It's let down by overall bad directorial vision and lame dialogue. Most of the characters are unconvincing. This might not be their fault altogether, but the directors fault for not filtering inappropriate performances out, and casting badly, which is part of the lack of vision that causes this film to feel defective.

Justice not done.
10 February 2022
Surely there must be some laws against procuring money from people fraudulently. Talking people into handing you money using stories that are pure lies. In one sense they 'gifted' the money to him. But the POS was only able to achieve this through elaborate fraud.

I understand that arriving at one single prosecution would be difficult as the crimes occurred in multiple countries which will have differing laws and differentiating bindings to international law. I'm not a lawyer but I bet it would be complex. They have the evidence though, so many texts from the lowlife full of provable deceit, and the transfers. I guess the women need a bag-load of money to get started on prosecution, or they need lawyers to step in pro-bono.

Standard shoot 'em up.
12 December 2021
There was an endless supply of turbaned assailants in this one. Much like a first person shooter game where the action doesn't stop and those targets just keep on coming. I was wondering who the sexy woman walking out of Gunny Raines's office was - It turns out she wasn't staff! It was also great to the Ms Winston (Olivia) takes up arms and fight.

The film is good if you are after some action.

Watchable but highly predictable.
19 November 2021
It's pretty easy to stay two steps ahead of everything that happened in this, which in itself made an entertaining 'guessing' game to play while watching it. Well directed, but not so uniquely written. The sound was a bit on the nose in places which was distracting, but in the end it was an easy watching thriller, not taxing on the mind. Swank gave a good performance, and the protagonists wife was gorgeous !!

Outstanding fantasy action.
15 November 2021
There's a fair few butt-hurt males here upset that this film has a female lead. How about you grow a pair? The film is great. One of the freshest action fantasies I've seen for a while. It blew me away with its unpredictability and energy. It has something to say about sexist guys too.

To those whom think some of the action is unrealistic, perhaps you don't understand the genre? In Marvel films do we see 100% realism? No we don't. Same here. It's fantasy. Get over it :)

No likable characters.
7 September 2021
A film with no likable characters goes nowhere, silly filmmakers. Also there seems to be no point to the story, a second error. The 3 stars are for production values, which were not terrible.

Nice piece, strong characterizations all around, so well written and cast. I feel sorry for those viewers who think a film like this is too slow for them. They've got some kind of life problem. They need a whack wham bang story to stay aroused. Poor them :)

Inaccurate.
23 August 2021
I'm familiar with the details of many of these cases and the designers and CGI artists have pretty much ignored witness descriptions of craft and their actions and taken too much artistic license. They've done a Star Wars job on the look of everything, and added in alien closeups when most of the time the witnesses didn't see what they looked like.

The Reverend Gill section for example. The Reverend and co saw 'figures' from a distance, not cloaked blond Caucasian dudes like it the so-called reenactment. Disappointing, especially when they had the money to get things right.

In the name of God.
7 August 2021
Well, we can't get enough films depicting how misguided these mentally ill dickheads are who think killing people in the name of God is great. It's been happening all through history, killing in the name of... If there is a God, God will obviously dislike these murderers :)

These people just don't understand reality. They are spiritually way off track. A pity. They wont find out how far off they are until they die and face their recently generated Karma.

Quite well done with some massive set pieces. Around a third the way through this really kicks off. Some of the miniature work is very impressive, as are the matte paintings. Keep in mind, its from the 70's. Don't be to harsh on it.

Fullfilling apart from the last confrontations.
23 June 2021
Quite good throughout. Lots of logical action and revelations. But, the end part was too much of a turkey shoot. You would expect them to have more challenges than they did there. The ending was out of context compared with the rest, where the opposing assailants were reasonably even against each other given their relative histories.

Great action otherwise, and it's always nice when a movie has a cat :)

This is excellent. Had a great rime watching it. There ends up being lots of compassion coming from all places, some places one would not expect.

A pity it had head slicer Bruce Spence in it.

Warning: Spoilers
Brilliant concept and effort for a low budget. Realistic and logical behavior from the main lead, and the drama unfolds at a good pace. Considering we get to see some of what happens at the destination, I would have preferred to expand that into, for example, visuals of some destination habitations and others activities there. What is destination life like? More budget can afford more VFX I know, but just saying, this would've been the cherry on the cake ! Part two perhaps?

Music has more than four chords !
28 April 2021
This is a mad and full on story book tale, full of heavily veiled archetypes.

Frantic and dazzling, yet little time for depth of character or engraving endearing memories. Flitting comedically from here to there, the story comes as we move into the ending. The music is highly repetitive, pretty much the same cliche chord sequence over and over and over throughout the film - this was tiresome.

Some of the characters saved it though.

Worth a look if you like plays - and madness.
