Assassin's Creed (2016)
There is hope for artistically directed mainstream movies
Spoiler: In one scene Michael Fassbenders character is kinda laughing at the craziness he's in and telling himself what the eff is going on.
In terms of the movies pace, this came at the perfect time and from that point forward I was with him, I was rooting for him. Been a long time since I was rooting for a character in a mainstream movie, last one was Furiosa in Fury Road. Which gets me directly to the point that I too need to laugh at the craziness around me in relation to the movie industry, but I'm not telling myself what the eff is going on, I kinda have an idea. No media nowadays needs to be bribed, they need to be fed. It's just as simple as that. Let me ask one question, do you really want pizza everyday in your life?
Now the movie at hand here is really good, not perfect, but better than most offerings from the latest pizza delivery boys from Disney or Marvel. Well, but quality doesn't matter anymore in mainstream cinema, that is what the pizza addicts from every industry media outlet are telling you.
Action is superb, well choreographed, at the same time raw and energetic. Not one actor is phoning it in, not even Gleeson who is more or less just standing there for a couple of seconds. Gleeson and Fassbender make those seconds count.
I want to see more of that unique setting, more of the assassins and templars and more of this obedience versus free will science fiction element. Most probably I'll be disappointed because:" Show me the money, Jerry!"
Best escapism movie of the year I've seen and it's a game adaption, Warcraft was close, this is on point. Difference is Asssassins Creed has the better actors.
Now that I had a steak I could go with a thin coated pizza again.;)
Sense8 (2015)
Capable of reaching Breaking Bad level with actually much deeper meanings
First things first, I'm a straight guy who adores woman. In contrast to Sigmund Freud, I'm not interested in what a women want, strangely I find that easy to get and this is a pure individual thing, so there is no answer for everyone and really you shouldn't ask yourself that question, if you're a guy. What are they capable of, either alone or together with you/me? This is interesting to me. This question could lead you to interesting thoughts about why woman need their faces hidden in some cultures/religions. I'm not a believer in a common sense, but I'm also no atheist. People need to believe in something and I did choose to believe in us, the humans, even if I really hate what we are doing so very often.
Reviewing an artistic form of communication with declaring that I'm a non believer(common sense) and straight should feel a little weird, but it's important to understand where I come from, how I perceive things.
Sense8 is not a product to sell, it is art and this alone elevates the series up over most existing television or cinema. The Wachowskis never were simple directors to me, they are artists and real artists don't need to explain their work, that's what the people on the other end of the spectrum are there for, the viewer of said art form. What artists need is acknowledgment, recognition, credit. To my view it's enough when there is only one out of billions of humans who starts thinking after viewing, listening or be addressed by art, to declare it art. Additional credit for Tom Tywker here.
The human psych, the mind really interested me since I remember started thinking and if you're familiar with the work of C.G. Jung this show could be of some interest to you. Here i might add that I do enjoy a good western, or comic book movie whenever i want to, escaping is fun and required nowadays more often for me, but just for the sake of escaping alone is not enough all the time. I'm getting bored, tired and become dull. I'm not offended by gays or bisexuals like some other reviewers and therefore I wrote my little introduction, people who do have that "problem" are fearful of knowing themselves. This is not meant to be negative or offensive, as I mentioned above I believe in us. But and now some more on the execution of the show and here comes the negative critic, some of this was already addressed by others. I believe there won't be any changes in that matter regardless any critic, because the wachowskis don't care and right so. Perhaps others and me don't really get it, but the love making scenes really could be scaled down to some extent. On the other hand one special scene in the later episodes, which other reviewers did find kinda "offensive", I found myself hoping they gonna show it and they did.
The science fiction fantasy element pairs real good here with compelling writing, characters find themselves in dire situation and the audience finds themselves asking how are they going to solve those moments. Therefor my Breaking Bad comparison.
Their are some monotonous episodes, but I found none boring and they serve to build up tension and helps to know the characters. Nonetheless here is room for improvement. On a cinematic level there are some really out there shots and scenes to witness, the music and soundtrack is a real treat too. Production value is game!
Regarding the actors I want to say Aml Ameen, Donna Bae, Max Riemelt and Miguel Angel Silvestre are the stand outs for me. Terrence Mann shines as whispers as well I think. The rest is far above average, there is no bad acting here. The supporting cast is fantastic as well, with the exception of one child actress, I'm sorry but she looked one time to often straight at the camera.
Sense8 is highly recommended for the open minded, but I want to urge the close minded to view it knowing it won't happen to often, but hey it happens.;)
The Hateful Eight (2015)
A matured Tarantino delivers social critic
Finally some real social critic from Tarantino. Not for everyone, not even for all Tarantino Fans i suppose. You need to get and love his rhythmic prose to enjoy this movie. That is because you need to be hooked to this movie which will be the cause to have the desire to look deeper into it. There you'll find something ugly and beautiful at the same time, a critical view of society, justice and yes, humanity.
Spoiler: John"The Hangman"Ruth dies first, as one of the main characters, which is important. He doesn't fit in there, the character could have lived on but not his principle, this needed to be crushed to rise again later, at the end, with full meaning. Job is not supposed to be easy, hm? It's not supposed to be hard either! Well, this sums up living on our planet. On a daily basis you need to make a decision, at least moral people should do that, but it is quite clear immoral people do this as well the decisions just differs. You are able to change your own decisions, keep that in mind when viewing the character Chris Mannix(outstanding acting of Walton Goggins), who might be a sheriff or not, we will never know.
There really is a deeper meaning, but it won't be discovered by every viewer. The decision to have an original soundtrack speaks volumes about how Tarantino himself thought about this.
Technically this is Tarantino's best work till now, from my point of view, Kill Bill his second. But this is not the Tarantino most will expect, this is no Kill Bill or Pulp or Basterds, it's a neatly filmed theater stage play, an ensemble movie, which really defines the word ensemble. Soundtrack is fantastic, no not just that, it's near perfect.
The movie is long, some people will find it boring and i understand that as i said in the beginning you need to be interested, to be hooked perhaps by Tarantino's Style to look deeper. In my twenties I think this movie would not have the same impact as it had now, perhaps I matured with Tarantino. I like that about myself, I really do. Thank you for entertaining me the way i want it to be, Mr Tarantino.
The sad part about it is, that those who really should look behind the violence(which is an art form), behind the offensive speech(which is just a writer doing his job like he should) are not going to do it.
Regardless, I'm giving it a 10, cause the lyrics in this song, oh sorry movie, are phenomenal.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Should have been left asleep for Arndt to finish the sricpt
Hypocritical marketing and lazy writing took the magic from Star Wars.
I'm not disappointed with this movie, I just move on. Furthermore I believe this is what a lot of other Cinephils and probably some "Star Wars" Fans are going to do as well. Not a problem for Disney, for sure. But as they don't give a s---,I'm now "forced" to do the same.
Funny thing is, I convinced my 10 year younger girlfriend to watch the midnight screening for this, because I had hoped after reading Disney is going to take this seriously, even with a whole story-group overlooking the new movies, where there are more women involved would be really interesting. Turns out some old guys like Ridley Scott, George Miller, a middle aged Tarantino and even George Lucas himself to some extent in his OT, are far more capable when it comes to write strong believable female characters.
After Mad Max Fury Road we talked the whole night about that movie until we had sexual intercourse, after the Force awakens we proceeded right to the juicy bit, without much talk. I'm one of those guys who likes both intercourse and conversation, figure yourself which movie my girlfriend was really in awe with and in which she was bored to sleep.
I loved JJ Abrams Star Trek for what it is, I can have fun with such stuff, if it's done right. But, well... He made such a fool of himself here, it's kinda funny really, because of the marketing, NOT because of the movie. Movie was average, nothing to talk about really, but because of the insulting marketing. Movie target group could be considered uneducated teenagers with a lot of money, the marketing not so. Should be remembered.
The "professional" critics *cough* must not be forgotten. I imagine a hard life to be chained to whatever you think you're chained to.
I'm so proud about my girlfriend now, even more than before, that I really have to thank Disney and JJ for this. As intended? Hehe, I don't think so. What does a Kiri Hart or Kathleen Kennedy see in their mirrors now? Well probably dollars or something, I guess.
To all those," IT FEELS LIKE STAR WARS!!1" 10 stars reviews. You should watch some adds featuring Star Wars, they feel like Star Wars. A movie with the tag Star Wars should for sure not just feel like it, it should be plain Star Wars and not only felt alike. Enjoy it nonetheless, which is fine for me. Live and let live. That's diversity.
Mathhew Vaughn is the only director here, who gained a lot of credit because of Star Wars The Force Awakens. The initiated will know why.
Star Wars TFA 6,9/10 good scifi-fantasy, nothing more, perhaps less.
