Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001)
Bad News Bears and the Raj
This movie was very well made and it looked fantastic with authentic costumes, locations and nice songs but the story and characters were one dimensional and cartoonish. A bunch of misfit peasants beat the arrogant Brits at their own game with a 3-way love triangle woven in pretty much sums this movie up. The ending is obvious from the very beginning and hence there isn't any suspense. There is some petty infighting amongst the peasants along with some modern day political correctness thrown in about the caste system but in the end everyone in the village lives happily ever after. I much prefer "Monsoon Wedding" and "American Desi."
First Person Singular: I.M. Pei (1997)
Great documentary
This movie introduces us to selected works of one of the greatest American architects of the 20th and 21st centuries, Mr. I.M. Pei. From the National Gallery to the Loevre and Miho museum, Mr. Pei's works are among the greatest achievements of Chinese-Americans in the world.
Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision (1994)
Great documentary
This movie is a wonderful look at a very talented architect and designer. It gives us a glimpse of the young woman who challenged the national powers that be in pushing her vision of the Vietnam War Memorial. This film is much more inspiring than a movie about some kids pursuing their goal of being the best ball bouncer.
