The Whistleblower (2010)
Dark film ...Not plot but lighting
I do not know if it was the print or the film was filmed like that.Saw it at a lousy theater AMC on 42nd St not the best place to see an independent film. I could hardly make out the characters it was so dark. Some scenes were totally missed as it was pitch black. And at when end when Vanessa Redgrave has a chat with Rachel did not understand one word. Of course no one around to correct if it was the projector. Got my money back but really wanted to enjoy the film. I think it was a good plot, good acting and great to see a film about another whistleblower but by the words at the end nothing happened to the guilty and intimated the same is going on in Iraq and wherever we fire guns
Romeo and Juliet in Yiddish (2010)
I thought I was going to love this film but....
I was all set for the wild experience of Shakespeare in Yiddish but maybe it was this print but the subtitles went so quickly that i lost half the film. Thank goodness I knew the plot but in my theater no one laughed and 4 people walked out. It was so disorganized also with too many side parts and distractions. The actors were terrific as they were not professional but it was the editing that went array and the titles on the Le Mans track. Would I recommend...probably not. Also the costume person was on drugs when it came to the women in the film. I do not think they expect a large audience but once you get that audience in your seat they should be able to follow the dialogue via the titles....Isn't that the easy part of making a film?
This is My Land... Hebron (2010)
"This is my land...Hebron"
I saw this film at the Lincoln Center Film Festival yesterday and loved learning about this important situation in the Middle East. Even though I visited Israel for the first time last year I heard nothing about this part of the relationship between Israel and Gaza. But for the last year through films,TV and news I realized it is the worse situation and causing so much animosity throughout the Middle East. I am sure in the near future there might be a "Spring Awakening" in Gaza. Israel is so wrong and this picture shows you all the reasons to draw that conclusion.I am sure if there were peaceful demonstrations the Israelis would act like Syrians. I am afraid in Pro pro New York and US this film will never get distributed. But all American Jews, other than the Ultra Orthodox, should see this film, maybe some minds will be changed.
The film makers spoke after the film and I think they are better documentary makers than speakers. One of the questions asked them if they were Jewish and where they were from and Stephen Nantanson had a problem telling the audience if he was Jewish.I thought it was a relevant question to ask of a writer of a somewhat religious movie. They did not answer the other questions very well to my mind but that did not make me not like the film.
Please search for this film either on TV or the web or other film festivals as it is a must for every knowledgeable person.
Little Ashes (2008)
The quality of the sound
The sound of this movie is horrendous. I think I missed 70% of the words. My friend sitting next to me did not say anything during the movie but she heard less than I did, she told me at the end. We were in the Paris Theater in NY and it was really empty and no one was making noise. Between the accents and the non existent sound equipment the movie was too long. And I wanted to shout for the first half an hour " kiss him already".....Do not recommend this movie unless desperate. The characters are unlikeable to start and then add you have to strain to listen....too much work. Also when the translated Lorca's poems they did it with an accent. How pretentious. Should have been done in Spanish with subtitles.
