I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
Awful
Boring. Stupid. Pointless. I knew after the third line of dialog that I was going to hate this movie, but I hoped the cast would be able to resurrect it. Two plus hours in a freezing theater later, they didn't. Awful awful awful
McMillions (2020)
interesting, but
Starts out great, but then deteriorates into a freak show. Should have stuck to the story instead of endless up close and personal interviews with the perpetrators. None of them was interesting. Like most things on tv, should have been cut down by a third to a half.
Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens (2020)
awful, awful awful
If I could give this show a -10, I would. There is nothing funny or remotely interesting about this awful show. Toilet jokes are the lowest form of humor and it's always sad when female writers resort to them. B. D. Wong is very good as a piece of wood though. Don't waste your time with this garbage. If you want a good laugh, go watch Mr. InBetween.
Little Women (2019)
Awful, awful, awful!
I never read the book, so I can't speak to the film's authenticity, but every single scene where the sisters were together was nothing but screaming, giggling, and talking over each other so much that I couldn't understand what the scene was about. The jumping back and forth in time was confusing to the point where it seemed that it took Beth 7 years to die. I think scarlet fever worked a lot faster back then. Plus, they complained about being poor, but they lived in a gigantic house with Victorian furniture and fireplaces falling all over the place. And a housekeeper/cook who prepared so much food for breakfast that it took the mother and the 4 daughters to schlep it over to a real poor family. Oh, and the skits they put together in the uninsulated attic in the winter? Not in New England they didn't!
Can't comment on the acting because most of the scenes are so short and convoluted I couldn't discern any acting.
Soooooooo disappointed.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Disciples of Nick Gomez
I've only seen a few of the Safdie brothers' films, and every time all I can think is that they're just updating Laws of Gravity. Enough. Find something more redeeming to write about.
Destroyer (2018)
So disappointed in this movie!
I was looking forwatd to seeing Nicole play such a different role and ended up walking out. Aside from the totally confusing timeline, the dialog was absurd and it was painful to watch Nicole grapple with the role. She was as unbelievable as an LA cop as Elizabeth Olsen was as an FBI agent in Wind River.
Mary Queen of Scots (2018)
What? No tartans?
The set and costume designers must have read a badly written guide book about Scotland. Holyrood Castle has NEVER looked like Macbeth's castle. And I seriously doubt whether every single person in England or Scotland wore black all the time, especially in Scotland. Mary was a Stuart and would have been wearing the Stuart tartan at least some of the time, and the lords and ladies of the various clans would have worn their own tartans. But thank god for the political correctness that gives us multicultural lords and ladies and twists history into absurd realms.
Stella's Last Weekend (2018)
Brilliant
This is what indie films should be. Funny, poignant, delightful.
First Man (2018)
What a disappointment.
I checked my watch 35 minutes into this film and thought oh good, less than an hour to go. I then realized that the film is 2 hours and 20+ minutes long. I lasted another hour and left.
Unlike some other reviewers, I thought the sound track was the best part of the film.
Boooorrriiiinnnnnggg.
The Bookshop (2017)
Awful.
I have to say that the films I've seen this year that are worthwhile are few and far between. Unfortunately, this film isn't one of them. Stilted acting, bad directing, bad timing, and ridiculous costumes didn't help. I got the feeling that the director was trying to make each scene be something profound, but making the scene last 30 seconds too long wasn't the way to do it. In the end, the whole movie just seemed pointless and I added it to my ever-growing list of "how on earth did this thing ever get made" movies.
