Exploitative, but still a damn good film...
11 February 2003
I know a lot of people seem to have a passionate hatred for this film. After all, it was made to cash in on the success of The Blair Witch Project. But to be fair, the film industry does this all the time, taking a popular film and its ideas & themes, then running them completely into the ground.

But who really cares about that crap, as long as the film is good. I do not claim to possess an intricate knowledge of filmmaking; I simply like what I like and don't care if other people laugh at me and think I'm stupid for enjoying what they consider bad cinema.

When I first watched The St. Francisville Experiment in college with a couple of my friends, I was totally drawn into the film. For the hour+ that it was on I was completely engrossed in the goings on of the four characters as they try to determine whether or not the house is haunted. Granted, the acting certainly wasn't Oscar-caliber, but the cast was believable enough to keep my attention for the duration of the film. They exuded enough of a naive charm that I found them likeable and wanted them to come out of the house unscathed.

Perhaps most important of all involving a haunted house film was that I found the film scary. It's been quite a while since I've felt fear from watching a film, having my skin break out in goosebumps. And this movie did it for me, and I can't thank them enough.

Ripoff or not, I like this film! It has believable characters, a cool back story based on true events, eerie atmosphere, and an overall feeling of doom and horror. I like this film even more than The Blair Witch Project (which is itself somewhat of a ripoff of Cannibal Holocaust), and I am not ashamed to say that.

The beginning of the end of what we all know as the action film
21 January 2003
I saw this film while in college, and though I saw The Killer first, this film is just as powerful and they both stand together as films that have totally reshaped my concept of what an action movie is. Also, as I become more aware of what makes a movie work, I pick up on the depth of the characters, what drives them to their destinies and the relationships that are forged or destroyed along the way. All in all a wonderful film, but I must admit it is the action scenes within Woo's Hong Kong films that keep me in constant awe, no matter how many times I watch them. Perhaps it was a conscious decision to move away from such scenes in his films, but nevertheless John Woo has left us a handful of films that can stand on their own as some of the greatest movies of all time.

Zombie Bloodbath (1993 Video)
One of the best cheese flicks out there!
20 October 2002
Warning: Spoilers
Warning: possible spoilers!!!

Okay, this film that was made in 1993 and shot on video certainly isn't the greatest film out there, but it certainly is entertaining. I believe it was made cheesy on purpose, and that's what makes it so fun to watch. Another good thing going for this tape is that not a single frame of it is boring. It moves along at a lightning speed and manages to entertain throughout. My only criticism would be the gut munching scenes and the melting scene in the beginning went on too long, making the overall shock a little less than it could have been. In spite of that, for a zero-budget flick this film boasts some impressive effects and a great deal of ingenuity. It really shows that director Todd Sheets and his crew had fun making this film. * * *

Redneck Zombies (1989 Video)
The title says it all!!!
20 October 2002
Thank God someone had the lack of taste to make this saucy little number. Redneck Zombies is one of the best splatter comedies ever! It's got tons of gore, hilarious dialogue, some surprisingly good acting, and some truly disturbing moments. I didn't expect to actually be unnerved by a film with a title like Redneck Zombies, but it definitely has some moody, disconcerting scenes in it. Released by Troma, the undisputed kings of bad taste cinema. Go pick up a copy today, or I'll go a lookin' fer ya. HEH, HEH, HEH!!!

Puking has never been so fun!!!
20 October 2002
Warning: Spoilers
Warning: possible spoilers!!!

Cannibal Ferox (aka Make Them Die Slowly) is one of the most notorious entries in the cannibal sub-genre of horror cinema. When I first saw this film I was expecting it to be utterly disturbing and something that wouldn't leave my mind for several days afterwards. That, however, was not the case.

Nevertheless, this was a good movie full of sickness, horrific violence, and cheesy acting. To call this film "disturbing" is to call Scream a "good horror film." Granted, it certainly has its nauseating moments (and thank God, too; it IS Italian horror after all), but they're definitely not what you'd expect, unless you're a relative horror virgin. The gore is excellent, the locations are well-photographed, and the music is pretty decent (except for the stupid disco crap).

So what can you expect from this film: disembowelments, castration, eye gouging, authentic animal butchery, booby torture, severe cranial trauma, and various other forms of delightfully gruesome mayhem. This is definitely worth a look, though don't expect high-class cinema.

Pieces (1982)
Good at being bad.
18 October 2002
Pieces is a cheese classic! It has bad acting, continuity errors, lovely naked chicks, and tons of gore via chainsaw (dismemberments, decapitations, etc). It' a masterpiece of sleaze and perversity. Any horror fan worth their salt should check this flick out. Features one of the best and stupidest endings in film history. A triumph!

The Evil Dead (1981)
WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!
10 October 2002
The Evil Dead is hands down the single greatest horror film of all time. Its plot is simple and direct, the characters are few and interesting, and the pacing is wonderful. I had been a fan of horror for several years before seeing this movie. I read about it and wanted to see it, but at the time it was harder to find than uranium. I finally got to see it on the Sci-Fi Channel in the early-to-mid 90s, and I was spellbound. This movie scared the hell out of me and left me creeped out for a good while after it was over. After seeing this movie, my lifelong love of horror was cemented. If you are a horror fan and haven't seen this film, WATCH IT!!! And shame on you for not seeing it earlier.

Perhaps the finest walking dead picture ever!
10 October 2002
Viewing this movie for the first time at the age of 16 was a delight. I had seen Night of the Living Dead and had heard a few things about the sequels, so naturally I wanted to check them out. This is one of those movies that can change your life, and it certainly did so for me. I've seen other horror films that were just as good, but Dawn of the Dead has that extra something that makes for a great time. Sure, there are tons of horror and splatter platters out there, but of them how many are good enough to warrant multiple viewings. Not just a few, but dozens, hundreds even! I've rewatched this masterpiece many times and it just gets better. Not only is this a good horror/splatter film, it is a good film period, one of my absolute favorites. Romero is the man!!!

A POS movie, but entertaining nonetheless...
1 October 2002
In the world of horror, you have some outstanding films, some good films, some boring films, and some films that are just plain awful. Burial Ground is one of those films. Don't get me wrong, though! I still think it's one of the best zombie flicks I've seen. From a technical viewpoint the film is a muddled hunk of butt pudding, but its own ineptitude is what makes it so watchable. The buckets full of gore help out as well. If you want a well made zombie film, check out the works of Romero and/or Fulci. However, at least give this movie a chance if you can find it.

THIS IS THE WORST MOVIE EVER!!!!
1 October 2002
I cannot for the life of me understand why this film is held in such high regard. I saw this film in high school in my science fiction class and I found it boring, annoying, pretentious, and an utter waste of celluloid. And while I enjoyed some of his other films, Stanley Kubrick's directing style makes me want to choke myself retarded. Yes, life isn't all happy endings, but his films have such an overwhelming lack of humanity, it makes me want to commit suicide. I don't care what anybody says, 2001 is a boring hunk of manure.

Now THIS is a zombie flick!!!
27 September 2002
I first saw this movie at the age of 17, and even then it freaked me out. This is one of the best zombie films ever made. It delivers the goods and doesn't let up. The atmosphere, the scenery, the gore...all of it is presented beautifully and with a style that is hard to match. Zombie: the opposite of The Dead Hate the Living.

So awful you'll laugh yourself stupid!!!
25 September 2002
A friend of mine from college showed me this movie. He told me it was really bad, but not in my wildest dreams would I have thought it would be the way it came off as. Imagine every single cliche in a kung fu film and every terrible effect you've seen in a movie...it's all here!!! You know it's gonna be bad when the first two lines are: "My friend, what are you doing?", "If you really wanna know, I'm gonna kill you, bastard!" A technical mess for sure, but I haven't seen a movie that has entertained me as much as this one in a long time. If you like crap cinema, CHECK THIS ONE OUT!!!
