Nacho Cerdà (Aftermath, Genesis) directs The Abandoned, an excellent ghost story with brutal gore and a dark, horrifying atmosphere. The plot may not be terribly complicated but the film is saved by good performances and an unrelenting sense of dread. Anastasia Hille (The Hole) and Karel Roden (Hellboy) are fantastic in their simply written yet stark roles. The Abandoned is a film that one is easily lost in with horrors waiting around every corner. The Bulgarian locations are stunning and haunting. Nacho Cerdà is, without a doubt, one of the new heavies in the realm of talented horror film directors.
I was definitely surprised by this film's sincerity and commitment to scaring the crap out of me and my wife. This gets my vote for the best theatrically released horror film of 2007.
