Red Notice (2021)
Good, light hearted fun
Good, light-hearted fun...but who was the actor playing Das - it's like someone won a competition on the back of a cereal packet to be in a major Hollywood/Netflix movie!
Agent Das aside, all the acting is spot on for this type of film . Reynolds, the Rock and Gadot are great together and, yes the plot is a little ridiculous but, honestly, if you are getting tied up in that you are watching the wrong movie and you probably need to lighten up a little. Maybe go be a professional movie critic as they all seem to continually struggle with the idea that a film could ever be made with the sole purpose of providing people with 90 odd minutes of harmless entertainment.
The Father (2020)
Deeply unsettling but flawless filmmaking
I am not someone who just rates any film I quite like 10/10 but it is hard to find any reason to mark this film any less.
There are many reviews on here that will tell you how superb, really superb, Sir Anthony Hopkins is in this film. And it really is a masterclass performance. So great that it means that Olivia Coleman's performance as the daughter struggling with her father's illness, and all that goes with it, is often overlooked - she too is characteristically first class throughout.
The film does as good a job as I have ever seen of putting the viewer in the unnerving and confused state of someone battling with confusion and memory loss by expertly playing with timelines, dialogue and characters.
This is a deeply moving and unsettling film, particularly for anyone who has had to deal with a parent with dementia - but just as a piece of filmmaking I think it is hard to find fault - a truly excellent film with outstanding performances throughout.
Greenland (2020)
Starts off badly and just gets worse from there
I understand that this film is not trying to win any Awards and it's just meant to be an Action flick for a bit of escapism....which is why I thought I would give it a go....but, it is just utterly mindless. The script and plot are offensively bad and packed full of cliches. Don't make the mistake I did and think "nah, that's fine...that's what I'm looking for right now"....you will just end up shouting at the TV and wishing you could get your 2 hours back.
Space Force (2020)
One of best US scripted comedies in a long time
Really well written with a great cast - this is the sort of show that makes me wonder how good US comedies could have been were it not for the network requirement to make everything last 24 episodes per season....
Steve Carrell and John malkovich are excellent but the show really benefits from the strength in depth of other characters. I'm somewhat amazed that the critical reviews are so lacklustre - but maybe these are the same critics that have been getting so excited by so many lacklustre network comedies for years....
Ideal Home (2018)
Funny, heart warming hidden gem
I hadn't heard anything about this film and just stumbled across it on Netflix. Decided to give a go, not expecting much, and now here I am writing a review on IMDB to encourage anyone who is wavering to definitely watch!
It's a lovely, funny and heartwarming film. Coogan and Rudd are excellent and have great on screen chemistry - the characters are all well constructed and each goes on their own journey (ok - somewhat predictably, but so what? It's a comedy..) and, despite their flaws, are all really likeable
Would definitely recommend
The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006)
fantastic film
This is a great film for anyone interested in British-Irish history with some fantastic performances. There are some elements which are somewhat reductive in terms of characterisations - but this should not detract from the overt (or underlying) issues the film addresses
The Jackal (1997)
Starts off badly and goes downhill from there...
Given the strong cast and relatively high budget for the time, it's amazing how much of a B-movie action-parody feel this film has. Richard Gere's Irish accent deserves special mention as it sets up the idea that no-one in the cast was taking this film that seriously - Which is all aided by an increasingly ridiculous plot. As the film goes on the absurdity grows and it is all capped off with some laughable green-screen and a sprinkling of hackneyed cliches....
Definitely not a "remake" of the original. Which is one plus point - they have tried to take elements of the novel and do something different. It just hasn't really worked out.
Red Joan (2018)
Disappointing and full of cliche
Did not know much about this film other than it stars Dame Judy Dench, which is usually a good indicator of a well made film.
And production values are good, casting is good etc...; however, I can't help but think it would have been a better film and they stuck more closely to the real story.
Story drags and the film doesn't miss any opportunity to drop in a cliche - first Judy Dench film I've stopped watching halfway through
