Knives Out (2019)
If you like detective genre, you will love this!
I absolutely loved this movie. Great detective story, taking inspiration from Agatha Christie, but set in current times, with intriguing twists that you may not expect. Tight screenplay, exceptionally written characters, great acting, brilliant resolution, and what an ending. I can't recommend this movie more, especially if you enjoy the detective genre! I want more of this please!
The weakest point is maybe one scene about online trolls, which is a total cringe feast - but this is only one short scene.
Oh and for those that did not enjoy the director's other movie (the Last Jedi), I can happily say this movie has none of the problems that TLJ has. I was really surprised myself, as I even considered skipping this movie after I learned who the writer/director is.
The Boys (2019)
Review for both seasons
Season 1:
Very inventive TV series, putting superhero genre on its head! The first half of the season is really interesting and draws you into the series. Sadly the second half is lost its momentum and it ends, of course, on a cliffhanger. Why can't we have complete stories any more? Fortunately a lot of character arcs are resolved to some extent and the last episode does have a finality to it. It does feel like writers had a very clear story to tell and they did just that, I just hope they would tighten it up better at the very end.
Season 2:
It's good, but not as good as the first season. Interesting characters, but we have mostly seen all of them before; a lot of intriguing story arcs, but they seem to lead nowhere. Character arcs are also quite broken, go nowhere or abruptly end. Sadly, at some point you start to wonder if anything will ever get resolved, or is this TV series going on indefinitely. Perhaps more cohesive writing between episodes would improve this series.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Below average, very disappointing
Below average, very disappointing. I've seen the first WW and I loved it, so I guess I had higher expectations than usual.
The good: Gal Gadot and Chris Pine are great together, I really enjoyed Barbara in the beginning, the story itself has some interesting premise, you understand actions of the "villains" in this movie well.
The bad: poor CGI - and worst of all - badly used, Diana gets new superpowers which are really lame and feel like deus ex machina, the story goes into very boring direction and is full of holes everywhere, the movie is padded with long scenes which bring nothing new and yet prolong the film to 2.5h, the message of the movie falls flat because of how it's delivered to the audience.
Overall: had potential, but really disappointing. Maybe with clever editing down to 1.5h it would be better?
Zootopia (2016)
Timeless
The really important movies are timeless. This is certainly the case with Zootopia.
Great story, particular focus on character development, beautifully animated and well-constructed world, and brilliant message to all children and adults.
Rock Dog (2016)
Surprisingly good
I seriously expected this movie to be just bad, and I watched it just to see how bad it is. But it's actually quite good? Music is its strongest part, so are the main characters.
The movie is not without problems of course, the storytelling could have been improved in a few places. Animation is not exceptional, although the designs are cute and memorable. And supporting characters are never fleshed out.
Still it was a very enjoyable movie and a surprise indeed. Would definitely recommend!
