Red Planet (2000)
Mindless sci-fi, leave your brain off hook.
This isn't a great movie. It doesn't have great acting. But it could have been done a lot worse. I enjoyed watching it, just for the sheer entertainment value. I wouldn't rent or buy a copy, but if it's on TV, I think I'd watch it again :). The movie shows that it there as a use of technical advisors to make the story sound plausible, but that's no reason to watch it. It's a typical space mission movie that has overused "Then do it for me" line. The effect are cheesy at some points and quite amazing at others. If you aim your hopes low for this movie, you'll enjoy it. It's not epic, it's just a bit of mindless sci-fi. Someone needs to think of a drinking game based on this movie.

Nightfall (2000)
The only thing similar to the book is the title.
I'm not that much of a hardcore Asimov fan, but Nightfall is one of my favotire stories. I saw this movie at the rentals and decided to give it a go. Like many other pointed out - the only thing similar to the story is the fact that there is indeed an eclipse on 6 sun world. The director decided to build the movie around the point where everyone go insane and start burning things. Which is an important part of the story, but not THE most important one. Not to mention the use of SUPER POWERS? "Hmmm... this story is nice, but let's add superpowrs to it! Yeah, that should make them watch it!" Err, not. To sum it all up - If you read the book, don't see this, it has little to do with the story and you will just sit and say "Ehhh... he can light flames with his mind?". I know i did :)
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1981)
Mostly recommended, but don't expect much
I've read the book, needless to say that I loved it. Some time ago I got the recordings of the original BBC radio show and enjoyed that version as well. So when the opportunity came along to see the televised version of the book, I hoped on it.
The show screams 'low budget' on props, scenery and actors (Ford especially). Still, with all that together, the show brings the book to life, but especially for those that already read it. Otherwise it will look like a very weird version of an 80's sci-fi movie.
If you read the book, you'll enjoy the show very much. If you haven't, then you'll just enjoy it less.
In summery, read the book before you press the play button.
