The Burrowers (2008)

sick, twisted fun!
2 November 2008
I really enjoyed it. It cleverly mixes a Western with a fun creature-feature, striving to keep the best parts of both genres. The way in which the creatures prey on people is very creative and fresh, and allows for some disturbing imagery throughout. The acting, too, helped keep the premise believable, despite how bizarre it starts to get. One of the weaknesses of the film, however, was that it took too long to get going...and felt a little too slow in key parts. The climax, on the other hand, is strong and worth the wait. If you feel like watching an elevated horror film...this is definitely one to keep in mind.

A tense and shocking film!

"Towards Darkness" really surprised me. I had heard little about it, and bought it online because I was intrigued. It is a tension-filled thriller, that kept me guessing what was going to happen next. America Ferrara does a great job in a performance unlike any other I've seen her do. The main character also does a good job. In terms of the story, it unfolds in a complex structure, with time jumps that reveal both the past and the present. Though during a few moments it ran a little long, I felt that overall the structure really helped add to the tension. It has a lot of twists and turns, and makes you realize how many things can go wrong during a single kidnapping. It also gave a great glimpse into Columbian life. All in all, the film felt authentic and exciting. It has both English and Spanish, and a cool tone. It was brutal when it had to be, and surprisingly tender as well. I would definitely recommend it, especially if you like '24' or 'Man on Fire.'

A Smart, Ruthless Thriller!
24 September 2008
"Eastern Promises" is an unforgettable journey into London's dark underworld. It shows how the Russian mafia is both out of place, and at the same time in control of the city. Viggo Mortensen's performance is simply fantastic. I am not sure if this is a rumor or true, but supposedly he went around London while on break from filming, with his tattoos still painted on, and was believed to be a Russian mobster. That is how authentic he is in this film. And Naomi Watts holds her own on screen with him. Their chemistry is amazing, and you can't help but want to see them together despite how different their characters are. The film itself is very violent and unabashed, so be prepared. It is not for the faint of heart, but it certainly delivers an authenticity to that world. I am shocked this film didn't make a bigger splash, and that so many people out there have yet to see it. It is an awesome movie that will both shock and delight!
