Don't try to be funny
11 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The latest Indiana Jones movie was actually a positive surprise compared to reviews and critics. The movie is for most of the time entertaining and has a good pace. Some elements of treasure hunt even bring back the spirit of Raiders of the lost Ark or The last Crusade. Harrison Ford again delivers a very good performance. Congratulations to a true legend to bring this legendary movie character back to life again. Also Mads Mikkelsen works surprisingly well in the movie.

The script has its weaknesses, especially the final part seems rushed and not logical, you come to the conclusion time travel only works in Back to the Future. You may argue that the supernatural elements in the first three Indiana Jones movies worked much better than in the last two. But, this movie is much more entertaining and delivering the Indiana Jones spirit much better compared to Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

What I really did not like in the movie were the special effects in the first two scenes, the train ride and in New York. Bad CGI effects. Directors by now should know that bad (=unrealistic, cheap, not state of the art) visual effects put audiences off. A scene like on the train already did not work in Matrix II (or III?) 20 years ago and it does not work this time. You ask yourself why is the train scene in the opening of The last Crusade so much better...first of all get rid of CGI.

Also the scene in New York with the horse in the subway is largely unnecessary and neither funny nor well directed (the whole NY scene looks off in terms of visual effects, cinematography and editing).

But despite the weaknesses in the beginning and at the end, a good and entertaining movie for most of the run-time with Harrison Ford not disappointing. A true legend of cinema!

I am Klaus
29 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
"I am Klaus." If you know the guy who has this Cameo in John Wick: Chapter 4, you may realize the only funny moment in this movie. Besides that I neither understand the imdb ratings nor the critical acclaim. NOTHING in this movie amazes me because it offers nothing that one has not seen in cinema before and on several other occasions movies have delivered action in a more suspenseful, more fast paced action thriller. But John Wick: Chapter 4 rather feels like watching somebody running through an ego shooter but that is admittedly not very exciting. The senseless and emotionless action sequences without any proper tension make John Wick: Chapter 4 a very dull movie. Sometimes the degree of stupid violence is really hard to bear. Especially in times like these, it makes you wonder, does it need senseless action movies full of ultra violence. I think not and I am annoyed that I went to the cinema for this movie. A movie the world really does not need. The end of the movie creates hopes that an end is put to the John Wick saga but I am still in doubt that this is really the end. Unfortunately the John Wick series is too successful. And I do not know why. P. S. The Berlin club scene is really a joke and nothing compared to proper club sense like in movies like Collateral, Black Swan or else, even Blade is better than this even though Blade is 25 years old.

Interstellar (2014)
9/10
The best movie of the 2010s decade
29 September 2020
You may argue that this movie does not make sense, that it is confusing or whatever but in fact everything falls together here and Interstellar is simply a rare masterpiece of film making. The acting is superb (I think only Matt Damon fits better in Goodwill Hunting than in this movie), the visual effects are stunning and the soundtrack is simply a masterpiece in its own right and Mr. Nolan's story telling on different time levels is also brought to perfection. The fact that I missed out on this movie in the cinema is indeed a shame but even watched on TV there is hardly ANY movie which is more gripping than Interstellar. A class of its own.

Rocky IV (1985)

One of the most inspiring movies
13 September 2020
On a motivational/mental level this is simply one of the best and most inspiring movies ever. The soundtrack is superb and the combination of songs and video is a class of its own. The movie has also very well stood the test of time and you can watch it over and over again and it does not turn boring. And by the way, do not underestimate the impact this movie had on the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Jurassic Park (1993)

Masterful cinematic experience
18 July 2020
Since 1993 there has been at maximum a handful of movies which offered a similar exceptional cinematic experience. This movie offered everything, innovative science fiction story, masterful, fast-paced story telling, exceptional special effects and a great soundtrack. Spielberg and team were again in their own class with this movie.

A great remembrance
9 July 2020
Very enjoyable as this also sheds light on the Bulls in the 80s and the origins and personalities of several team members. Information that was (except for the info in Dennis Rodman's "Bad as I wanna be" biography in 1996) almost impossible to get in Europe in the early 90s when the NBA wave just started spreading across the world.

Also a very enjoyable return to my own past. If this gets such high attention on Netflix in 2020 that tells me it was indeed something special back then to watch the Bulls Trail Blazers series in 1992 on German broadcast "Sportkanal" and watching the "flu game", "Kerr's clutch play in game 6 in 1997, game 7 against the Pacers in 1998 and MJ's final steal and score in game 6 of the finals in 1998 (all on DSF, commented by Frank Buschmann and Manfred Winter). The only moment which ever came close to this afterwards was Lebron's block in game 7. But just one single play, decades later. The Bulls and MJ will be long remembered as something special and this series fosters their legacy!

Positive surprise and highly recommended
6 November 2019
The movie is a very sound mix of drama and comedy. Thanks to an exceptional cast, a very well thought through script and very good directing / editing, the movie is really enjoyable and comes across as a serious melodrama with funny elements but never as a cheap comedy. The cast delivers a very good and credible performance. Also the script is very good and tells the story without unnecessary length while the funny elements are measured. Overall a highly recommended German movie.

Tarantino in decline
21 August 2019
The movie was disappointing. Too long, the story completely uninspiring and the twist at the end, well that's Hollywood. An excellent cast cannot save the movie, Brad Pitt delivers a great performance, Leo DiCaprio, actually one of the greatest, comes across as really bored and uninspiring. Many scenes with endless meaningless dialogues simply put you to sleep in the cinema. The art direction, cinematography, budget, actors may tell you that a great director is at work but the use of music in the movie is disappointing and the story simply lacks excitement and tense moments. Better go see some of Tarantino's older movies, up and including Inglorious Basterds almost all are great but this one unfortunately not.

Creed II (2018)
2/10
Creed 2: Cruise Control
15 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Rocky IV was the first title of the Rocky franchise I saw in the early 90s and few movies ever had such an inspiring and lasting impact. I had never seen any Rocky or Creed movie hat followed Rocky IV until now.

Only a few minutes into Creed II, the question came up, is there no easy way out? - Admittedly, the easiest way out would have been to leave the cinema straight away, but as I am reserving this measure of last resort for the worst to come - which could happen anytime soon in today's mainstream cinema - I had to endure 120 minutes of utterly bad movie making.

The story is a waste, completely predictable and at no moment one would feel any sympathy or whatsoever with any of the characters. It even does not occur to me why the main character (Adonis) should be considered the good, sympathetic guy while the other one (Viktor) is the villain. Actually one does not care. The best contribution from the movie came actually from Dolph Lundgren, at this was rather as it was nice to see him again, after Aquaman, and not because his acting was outstanding.

The music and the use of music in the movie is also simply bad. Maybe unfair, but comparing to Rocky IV again, these two movies are miles apart. Here an inspiring soundtrack, there some undefinable rap songs.

One moment in the movie, which clearly demonstrated that this is bad movie making was at the end of the second fight. There it is simply said, the Russian audience is supporting Creed, in Rocky IV you could really feel how over time the mood of the audience was shifting to support Rocky. But again in this Creed movie you do not feel any sympathy for any character whatsoever.

I also never realized why Rocky is at the end visiting his son and grandson, but so be it. Similarly the ending scene at the grave of Apollo does not convey a lot of emotions but rather leaves you cold.

Overall, a big disappointment. In all fairness, hard for me to explain why such a B-movie gets such a positive rating on imdb.com. For me a 2 / 10 at best.

Cinema is not dead (yet) thanks to MI6!
7 August 2018
MI6 - Fallout is a fast paced, very enjoyable action movie that never gets boring for the glimpse of a second despite almost 2.5 hours running time.

From my perspective the best action movie and overall one of the best cinema experiences in this century. Usually not a big fan of 3D but in this movie it really works well and I never felt 3D was as good in any other movie I have seen before.

The action is always fabulous but never seems ridiculous or too much over the top. Also, if you enjoy movies like Inception, True Lies, Interstellar, Tron, Ronin, etc. you will love this movie. The diversity of action scenes and of visual impressions throughout the movie is really immense and absolutely enjoyable.

The cast really acts very well together and the script delivers funny moments throughout without diluting the movie and making it too much of a comedy.

It is also really great to see Tom Cruise running full speed and full of adrenalin through the entire movie in a way we have seen him doing in so many other movies before (I first noticed that he enjoys running through his movies when watching the Firm in cinema). If you bear in mind that Mr. Cruise is a superstar of cinema for more than thirty years and you see him delivering such a superb performance in this movie, you must admit that still being on top of things after so many years is really an extraordinary achievement hardly matched by anybody.

A movie which deserves a lot of credit, an extraordinary rating and much box office success!

The Thing (1982)
1/10
Surprised that such a movie can make the IMDB Top 250
30 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie given that it ranks pretty solidly amidst the imdb top 250. I must admit that I am generally not a big fan of horror movies but as with all other genres, if the movie itself is good and delivers a good experience (e.g. Alien, Scream, Saw for horror, to name a few), I may like it. Entirely different is this movie. The effects are ok (probably quite good for the time), however, the story is completely relying on the shock effects derived from the way "the Thing" kills the crew. Otherwise, there is no atmosphere, no tension, NOTHING. Even despite Ennio Morricone being the composer of this movie, I am wondering if there is any scene where music is properly used or even creates tension. Overall for me quite a disappointment, I would have expected more from a movie rated that highly. An utterly awful and stupid movie, like most horror movies.
