Well-worth a look

Modern movie watchers should take the time to view this silent classic. Silent pictures have some inherent issues which call a bit more effort than talkies. This had the added speedbump of the titles being in Danish. At least the version I watched. And yes I know it's French. Also note the version I watched had no sound at all. It was not perfect by any means. It had more close ups than any movie ever made. It was a bit much I thought. Like many silent movies, the acting can be overly gestured at times. However it was still impressive in many ways. Falconetti was riveting in an amazing performance. And that ending was simply unforgettable. Worth the effort.

Fast-moving, fast-talking courtroom dramatics
21 July 2020
Hang on to your hats gang, this one moves real fast. More interesting than great moving making. But fun with lots of familiar faces to 30's movie geeks (like me). Check out lovely Joan Bennett in her blonde phase. Maude Eburne, Herbert Mundin and Christian Rub show up with their usual memorable roles. Skeets Gallagher and Zasu Pitts add zip as over the top radio hosts covering the trial. And Lilian Bond crushes as the "other woman". One bad note: Cook and Dinehart as the attorneys scream at witnesses and each other and the judge non-stop. I found it very annoying. Predictable and a little creaky but still well worth a watch IMHO.

With such likable stars and supporting cast, surprisingly lame.

This movie, as others have stated, is pretty disappointing given MacMurray, Colbert, Benchley, Kellaway, etc. Not much going on that was funny. Lots of talk about war bonds (that's fine here was a war on). Filmed so dark i thought it was a film noir murder mystery. Gil Lamb was annoying. I guessing the stuff with the dog was 'supposed' to be funny. It wasn't.

As couple of things of note however. DeCamp has a sweet little part. It struck me as funny seeing Tom Powers and MacMurray together in a film right after he and Stanwyck had just murdered him in Double Indemnity!

Overall, for MacMurray and Colbert film-o-philes only.

Alice White Shines Bright
1 April 2020
One of many "Broadway-based" early talkies and one of the most entertaining. Timeworn story of young girls trying to hit the big time (or at least find a rich husband). It's got it all: Cute smart talking chorus girls, love issues, sleazy con men/gangsters, snappy dialogue, musical numbers...

Alice White fans will love her in her first talkie. Sadly unknown today but for serious movie buffs, she was fetchingly cute, charming and peppy. Her musical numbers in this are first rate. Jig, Jig Jigaloo is wild.

Great support from Marian Byron & Sally Eilers as White's two gal pals. Jocelyn Lee is good also her rival. Also Tom Dugan as the stuttering loyal friend.

The weakest link to me was Charles Delaney as White's boyfriend and stage manager. I found him kind of a putz.

But overall, entertaining and full of early 30's flavor and lingo. Alice White to me is always worth it... Judge for yourself. thank you
