The Capture (2019– )

Overrated !
13 December 2023
I was really looking forward to watch this highly aclaimed show. But unfortunately it turned out a waste of time even though I managed to finish the 1st season. Plot is somewhat probable but the focus of this crime drama is changing irrationally. It is not a so called classical twist and turn but a rather a series of clumsy attempts to attract the viewers attention once a nearly dead end of certain chapter is reached.

It is so childishly shaped that I may not even give a try to the second season. Acting is in general average, yet there are some really less than mediocre scenes prolongations through less then average acting or directing. Forgotten the moment show ended.

Stereotype story with a scent of truth
24 December 2016
Lawyers are typically rich, legal representatives are associated to police and underground, human relationship are difficult and complicated, friendship never ends. Are these fact all known to you ? In combination with Slovenian movie femme fatale Nina Ivanisin and her cute fellow Nika Rozman this movie is very descent Slovenian story told by good actors and moderate script and directing. It has enough teasing secrets to attract your attention. It analyses the human relationship, it challenges friendship and tells about the complexity, but also simplicity and shallowness of our way of living. Food, party, sex, money, power ... that's it ! In combination with murder and few secrets, some of them alluding to similarity to real Slovenian scandals from recent past this movie is worth seeing.

Watch it - it is worth !
1 January 2014
Space. Silence. These two terms are a perfect description of the movie. You would think then there is no action in the movie, that the movie is rather boring in general. But you would be so wrong. There is a lot of action. Besides the happening, which is shown perfectly, regardless the methods, technology or computer animation used, there is an action, or better to say quite a storm also in the main actors minds. The first one seems very superficial and shallow, however full of wisdom, in the second character there is fight going on, for which space as a scenery is perfect place to take. A place of piece, a place of silence to think about. George is great, his stories are macho alike, yet behind this shell there is just a human who is scared and trying to convince the others he is not and vice versa, showing he is respectful to space but brave enough at the same time, even though only fictitiously. Sandra is, as usual, perfect in her role. She contributes her "spice" just in a sufficient quantity. Her attractiveness is also not distracting you from the initial movie intention, that is piece, that her character deserves. Dive in to Gravity, you will not regret it.

The Conjuring (2013)
7/10
A perfectly shaped Deja-Vu ... but nothing more.
4 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Well, it has been some time since I went into cinema to watch a horror movie. That is telling a lot. I read some very good reviews, also the IMDb score has persuaded me to see this movie in an atmosphere, which I enjoyed some 25 years ago. Scary, screaming, big screen light, but dark at the same time. A big thing ! So the scenery is great. Autumn is my season, therefore I just loved the atmosphere, leaves dropping from trees, gray and brown colors are my favorite. Actors are great. Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor have done a great job. Vera with vintage patina is "a must love", Ron role can be put in parallel to his many roles successes like "The office space" or "Band of Brothers". The story telling in the movie is super, moderately slow, evolving and convincing. Viewer is expecting, expecting ... but not getting it at the end despite all the effort from all the key factors, actors, screenplays, special effect masters, director ... What is wrong then ? It made me feel like I saw all of these already. "Amityville horror" from the 70's with James Brolin looked similar. How about to add bit of "Chucky" from the 80's ? If you think something is missing to this soup, please add "The Exorcist" from the 70's, and a slice of "The Poltergeist" and what you get is "The Conjuring" from 2013. Nothing more to add... A perfect Deja-Vu !

Show did not "touch" me that much ...
19 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This is a descent drama or thriller, which however did not "Touch" me that much, leaving me with a feeling to hardly wait for another week to see it. Not really. Of course each view is subjective, therefore I fully agree with other reviewers who liked the show, it has few very strong points. Personally I always want to live with the main character and be one with it for the 40 minutes I spent my life. And this is where this show fails at least a bit. So, to continue with the same approach and give you just few examples, which I hope are not spoilers. I would fight for my son with all the weapons possible. So if I would have show anger or aggression a bit, that should be no problem. From the very start social worker made me nervous, so did the main character who just watched it empty how he looses a fight for his son versus a non-experienced social worker representing a "system". For gods sake, his son is 10 year old, he is not a newborn ! They already spent a decade together of life, regardless how quality it was. The whole story started a while ago and a the script reveals its slowly, but I think it fails a bit with the persuading the audience. Second : my children have names, which are chosen (in most cases) by parents. And son of the main character therefore cannot be called "Buddy" throughout the series. Jake is a very nice name. Otherwise series concept is interesting and had a lot of potentials, but quite a lot of them were not used. Some episodes are very, very attractive, again the other were just like a pause or the "missing link" when script writers were cornered. All in all, a mediocre/fairly good show which will last until there will be something better. And I believe it will be shortly.

Dream House (2011)

Good enough, surely underrated ...
18 August 2012
Maybe today is a shallow day in general, so is this review. So what ? My mood yesterday would be best described as "depressive with brain-saver ON". A movie would do, whatever, before sleep. Therefore I was not expecting much. And I got much more ... Movie managed to trick me, it managed to improve my mood so I become interested in what will come out at the end. And again, in was not bad as the others are saying by rating this movie lower than 6 or 7. Characters in the movie are just fine, well evolved, tempting enough for the viewer, I rise thumb for a big "like" for Naomi Watts and also Rachel Weisz, even though I am always reserved to romances that may occur during movie filming. I admit, it is bias also in this case and Daniel Craig ... Of all "Bonds" he is definitely worst, but his acting in this movie was ... OK. No superlatives, mediocre-to-good. Watch it, it is worth, for a rainy day or for evening. It is no horror, but a completely descent thriller.

Very good, could have been perfect but there is still some room for improvement
30 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Germans are saying "mittendrin statt nur dabei sein", i.e. "being deep- in instead of only there nearby". Movie drags you in and somehow you do not want it stops, when movie is over, you want more. Or at least that you want by yourself to explore the same locations or feel same feelings the main character was having, when you will be next time in Paris. Even more, you want to experience it as soon as possible. Paris is the most beautiful city in the world, it is full of history, lost souls, sorrows, passions - this is hard to oppose. What could (even though a recognized filmmaker but comparing him to Paris quite small guy like Woody Allen) tell us more then what we already know ? Far from being a Woody Allen fan this movie drew my attention. Of course you cannot miss and avoid typical neurotic speeches and characteristic behavior of the main character, who actually impersonates Woody himself, namely Owen Wilson acts like being Woody and not Owen, the actor. Looking at my remarks or resents to this movie, this would be the first one. The second one is the huge differences in characters of the couple who wants to get married. Why they would marry if they are sooo different ? Paris supposed somehow to contribute to this by enlarging already giant gap among both, I also understand the point yet this is shown rather weak, it makes less sense. And last remark would be a "cruel" movie ending, I would call it relatively rude discontinuation of the path that Woody carefully and gently built throughout the movie. Thinking it twice this is not necessarily a bad thing yet it leaves you a bit bitter taste when leaving the cinema. I only decide to write few words when I liked the movie, so ...

Thumbs up for the movie, for the idea, for the acting and ... I am fully recommending it !

It is not worth watching ...
8 October 2011
Ray Liotta and Christian Slater are names, for whom you would say they are A class actors. So they are, however they cannot save poor scenario and a poor movie. Furthermore, such a movie does not bring them some good reputation and in future I will apparently have to avoid movies in which they will be acting. An hour and a half of your life spent to watch this movie is a period, which you will never get back. It is a poor TV-like movie with unrealistic scenario. (well, at least for majority of us normal, ordinary people, family guys). Very poor developed characters. Christian Slater role is marginal, not developed, his role could have been played by any guy from the street who never acted before. Just forget it ... grab a book or go for a walk ...

Aaahh..... good starting potentials, poor movie
18 March 2011
First thoughts : This will going to be something good. No zombies, no aliens, no sadistic crap ... just pure it-could-happen-to-everyone horror movie. Maybe with expected ending, maybe something new, but I thought let's give it a try. And movie continues that way. Each human has some boundaries that either he is kept in them forever, or (if pushed too hard) breaks them and escapes, does something (super)natural or at least ... something. Both ways are good, which is human end of the day. But no. Not this one, not our hero. This movie tries to show something new, some alternative perspective while it enters into a nonsense experimentalism, virtual apparent calmness, which is just not realistic. This movie can even make you nervous as it is that silly. It would be better if movie would continue into direction of psychological internal battle of the main "hero" (whether to do something or do nothing) or deeper character analysis than entering into some very poor horror atmosphere, which at the end leaves you empty as shell. So why even bother to write a short poor review about this poor movie ? Purely for the reason that someone else would not make the same mistake I did by watching it. Actors are good, no doubt, but their performance and story they want to tell is just awful. For the beginning of the movie I give 10, for the ending 0. (if this would exist). Sooo average ... or even below.

Black Death (2010)

Superb with mixed feelings
24 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
What is right and what is wrong ? Who was "good" and who was "bad" ? Is there a god ? Or devil ? Or no one ? Or both ? After seeing a movie you will not be able to find the answers to above questions for sure. According to medieval knowledge about diseases this scenario could have been possible. There are many lessons to learn in the movie corroborated with many sociological perspectives, however they remain untold clearly and could be interpreted in many ways, each of us has its own view. In a religious or a non-religious way. Acting is super, Tim McInnerny and Sean Bean are great, also the rest of the crew follows and keeps the audience convinced at all times. Atmoshpere is (I guess) reflecting our present perception of "medieval", no special effects were used for that besides interesting camera angles, but this will not be disappointing but rather encouraging. I highly recommend this movie, it has something ... special.

Oooooh, the 80's - who does not like them ?
23 May 2010
You should be born in the early 70', or late 60's to know what I am trying to tell here. All those things you were either not allowed to see, or too young to see are just as a gem coming out of nowhere now in new millennium, still very fresh after all those years. Beautiful girls with their special beauty which no longer exists today, teasing sexuality mixed with horror for teenagers (only in the 80's, of course, today there is no longer possible to create such a innocent atmosphere), naive mystics, beautiful scenery, simplistic but still interesting scenario - just excellent. It is not Carpenter alike horror, which I like most, however experiencing 80's atmosphere, being actually "in" rather than only beside - Priceless.

Dream team made dream results - another kind of review
10 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I dislike Leonardo in principle. Baby face look, too much public attention, girls like him ... however the older he gets, the more I like him, the more attention he gets from me. OK, who am I ? And further, going back watching his older movies they also seem way better then the first time I watched them with my younger eyes, like an escalation chart. He is some sort of my generation. Psychological simplified view related to movie "psycho" subject would be then - I am also getting older, so apparently somehow I hated myself when I was younger. This movie is excellent, superb atmosphere, times in 50's described just the way I expected them to be described 15 years before I was born ... in times, which are just 10 years after the WWII. Martin Scorcese made another masterpiece ! Ben Kingsley is not the guy you would typically trust (except for his role in Ghandi), neither Max von Sydow, a synonym for bad guy or at least a complex personality. However Scorcese managed to fool us with their exhaustive help. Just excellent. I am giving 9 of out 10, leaving some room for next Scorcese movie.

Saw VI (2009)

Why to use sadism and torture instead of intelligent script ?
30 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Saw 1, THE original "SAW" was definitely a masterpiece. Intelligent, smart, tricky, amazing atmosphere. Like pretty much all the continuation franchises first part is the best. Saw VI can be best described as NOT Saw. Franchise is dying especially due to extensive use of torture, sadism, disclosure of leading roles .... It has all the negative points that original "Saw" was not having. It is not intelligent, it is predictable, it is straightforward, it is way too "sadist" movie. Movies like this one (pure bloody nonsense) and Hostel could be categorized in special section, far from being horror. I suggest "S/M". To avoid just negative critics it has some good points like an attempt of description of real human nature and characters. Why someone lives and why the other one dies is purely in the hand of god - ups, the director. It really makes no sense. You can find a reasonable explanation of the choice, however you would have been able to find it also if the choice would be different. Otherwise it is technically correctly done movie with few goofs.

The Strangers (2008)

May contain spoiler ? What to spoil in this movie at all ?
30 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This movie does not give you a "normal" horror movie satisfaction. I there would be a special category besides "horror" named "boring-horror", this movie would be a in top 10. Dialogues are rare. If the actors would have been Nobe's, this movie could have easily been in top 10 most boring movies ever made, however Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman are saving this movie from being a total disaster. If this is suppose to be a psychological analysis of either characters (not !), background and reasons (not !), ambient (not !) or the new approach in movie making (maybe) .... it failed completely. This is not horror, at least it did not work for me.
