Who Is Erin Carter? (2023)
Bad acting. Unbelievable plot. Bad writing.
When I watch an action show, I don't sign up to see a fashion show. Erin ends up changing clothes at least five or ten times per episode just to look good while everyone else wears totally normal clothes.
That aside, the main actress has no depth and needs more variety than just a stone face. We sense no background from her, she's just spitting out lines. Very sad. The idea was good.
As others have said here as well, it's bad acting, the script is bad and the fighting scenes are unbelievable. Don't waste your time. This is just filler, just skip it unless you want to watch a braindead entertainment.
Queen of the Desert (2015)
Yet another degraded (i.e. romantic) portrayal of a very intelligent woman
What an amazing movie this could have been if we'd seen more of Gertrude Bell's true accomplishments instead of just learning of her love affairs. Such a sad waste of time and just another example of minimising women's intelligence to showing them as mere objects of men's desire or just having tea with Arab leaders.
She was an explorer and she mapped the Middle East. She also became highly influential to British imperial policy-making. We see very little of this here, except that she was present at official parties - but again the men in her life are the focus).
She joined the Arab Bureau in Cairo, where she worked with T. E. Lawrence but again, we don't see her at work. We just see her in pretty clothes sitting and chatting with him about nothing important.
She was awarded an Honorary Director of Antiquities and Bell was highly involved in the cataloguing and distribution of antiquities. We see none of that work.
These are but a few examples of her work. I recommend looking her up and reading about her immense life's work. In brief, had Bell been a man, we would have seen her innumerable contributions towards archeology, her political influence in nation-building in the Middle East, and much more.
The Widow (2019)
Kate Beckinsale's poor performance ruins the entire show
The story started off quite well. There are some good actors in here, and a good, original story, that held a lot of promise. I liked it that it was set in Africa and the intrigue was good. Most of the actors did a really good job.
Sadly, Kate's acting is so sub-par that it really starts grating at you the more you watch. By the end, I was just fast-forwarding to get an idea of what was happening as I could no longer bear to watch her as she has only one expression on her face most of the time. Too bad, this show could have been really good with a good lead actress.
Don't waste your time unless you really just want pure entertainment and aren't fussed with poor acting.
Arrow (2012)
Female actors have no substance - they are just eye candy
I'm astounded at the high ratings for this series. The female characters have no depth and are merely acting their lines trying to look good. They are so superficial. The young actors in the law office are not believable at all. They look like models who have been given lines to recite. Very disappointing.
Temple (2019)
First season ok. Second one is horrible
I gave the first season a 7 because it was cool and original but am now giving the whole series a 5 because the second season is really bad, not realistic at all.
Departure (2019)
Bad acting
The story is interesting but I don't like Archie Panjabi's acting. I find her eyes are empty and her range of emotions are so limited. She witnesses carnage and her eyes show nothing. The script is also a bit bland and the character s a bit superficial. Otherwise it's entertaining.
The Witnesses (2020)
Good story but not logical
A memory doctor has no experience interviewing people but does a great job on her very first try, with no training nor preparation. Then she is the only one interviewing suspects and each interview takes 30 minutes, instead of the police each interviewing a witness simultaneously to save time. Especially since they know the missing girl needs insulin. Ridiculous.
Karppi (2018)
Don't bother to watch Season 2
Season 1 is ok, but there are way too many inconsistencies in Season 2. People know things they can't possibly know, or when they are looking for something in a room, they magically go straight to where they will find it.... Karppi always guesses right all the time and her partner never figures out anything. It's the same thing over and over and gets really tiring and ridiculous after two full Seasons of that.
Is Australia Sexist? (2018)
Excellent overview of how far we've come and what still needs to be done
A must see by anyone who thinks that gender equality is important. An important reminder of how we need to address children's education to reflect that equality.
The Team (2015)
Too many inconsistencies
Good story in general but not well laid out in the details. Detectives often "know" what the can't know yet. It's like the script wasn't revised to be logical. Very disappointing. It just ends up being laughable. Example: a maid leaves the door wide open and goes back into the house (who does that?) And then "by chance" the detective walks in and goes straight to the one room where the key she has will open a drawer, because she only has a few seconds to find what she needs (and does within 2 seconds). Great idea, badly written.
Mea culpa (2014)
Unrealistic plot
A mother and her child come out of the police station. Two killers drive by on a motorcycle with the aim of killing the boy. And the mother tells her son to run away? Any mother would be grabbing her son and bringing him back into the police station, or just hiding behind a car so as not to get shot. Sending her son away on his own is such an improbable scenario. It's almost laughable.
Scandal (2012)
Too many actors are stress-ing ev-ry syl-la-ble
While the story is ok, what I find tiresome is that all actors seem to be asked to em-pha-size each syl-la-ble in-de-pen-dant-ly. When one person does this, it's ok because it becomes their style. But when 4 or 5 actors are talking the same way, it becomes overkill and cheesy. I wish each actor were given the opportunity to speak in their own style instead of being asked to fit into one common mould.
Mile 22 (2018)
All about shooting guns, blood and death.
There's barely a story here. The whole movie is about killing, non stop. It would have been nice to have a story going on too. There's so much action that the thrill is lost. Some nice technological gadgets though.
The Flash (2014)
Women are too dolled up
This is a fun, light TV program. The only problem I have with it is that the women are all dolled up and overly sexualised. They would be much more believable if they wore normal clothes to work, and relaxed clothes at home. Not every woman has to be wearing short skirts and wear bright red lipstick. Keep the women normal people and this show will gain in credence and respectability.
The Doctor Blake Mysteries: Ghost Stories (2018)
Keep it going!
The TV detective show Taggart continued despite the death of its main character and they did a great job of it. I like the new Taggart better than the original version. I'm glad that the Blake Mysteries will continue without Dr. Blake and I think Jean, who is a very strong character, can definitely pick up the lead. I just wish they didn't paint her up as a doll just because she has a more prominent role. She was more believable before when she was a normal human being, not all dolled up. It's just so out of her character. She's a down to earth woman, not a "check out my clothes and make-up" kind of woman. Anyway, I look forward to seeing more of the new series!
Zen (2011)
Worse than Inspector Morse
Let me first talk about Inspector Morse, which has no important women to speak of. There might be some female victims, but there are no women on the police force, no female doctors, no women in any position of importance whatsoever. I mention this because, Inspector Morse was produced more than 20 years ago, so one can 'somehow' understand how they would have missed the boat. Then came Inspector Lewis, in which they remedied the situation and one sees many normal women in many different positions of authority. Unfortunately, in ZEN, we go back to the stone age again. There are no women of importance. It's a man's world only. If there are women, they are either sex objects (i.e. their only value is their sex appeal), or they throw themselves at ZEN begging for sex, or they have gone mad. For a modern series, ZEN is not a healthy portrayal of real life where there should be normal women in many different situations and responsibility. I was not impressed at all.
