Do You Know Me? (2009)
Blood is not always thicker than water
Well, there was really only one redeeming factor to this movie and that was seeing Twilight's Victoria, Rachelle Lafevre, in a starring role. She did a fabulous job portraying a girl who comes to the realization that her entire existence has been a lie and then is thrown into a spiral of crazy events. Rachelle still shone, despite the lack of reality and massive plot holes in this movie.
The movie pretty much gets going right from the get-go. Rachelle's character Elsa/Sophie is getting drunk with her boyfriend and friend, when her friend notices a milk carton ad of a missing child who looks just like Elsa. As a drunken prank, they call the number on the ad. And from there, things just get plain weird.
Basically, this was like that old movie, starring Kellie Martin (The Face on the Milk Carton), on steroids. With the exception of Rachelle and maybe one or two others, the acting wasn't all that great and the storyline was pretty unbelievable (not in a good way) and hard to follow. Jeremy London, who I normally enjoy seeing in movies, gave a very disappointing performance. The movie jumps from scene to scene with minimal explanation of the events and ends with a supposed twist that I found to be fairly predictable. Overall, 4 out of 10 and that may be generous. Come on Lifetime, you've done better than that!
Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert (2008)
The next best thing to the actual concert!
I just took my 9 year old cousin to see this tonight. The only downfall was that I had not been prepared for the $15 ticket price, but I grinned and beared it, knowing that my cousin was super excited. I went into the movie thinking that I was going to regret the price I had just paid. Surprisingly, I came out not feeling too bad about it at all.
First of all, it was a 3D concert and I was a little worried at the beginning. Initially, there were a lot of huge effects and sweeping camera angles that became a little dizzying. But when it settled into the actual concert portion, I felt just fine. Before I saw this movie, I had always thought of Miley as a somewhat mediocre performer. I changed my mind after tonight. That girl has got so much energy and talent, I was thoroughly impressed! The behind-the-scenes clips were fun, because we got a glimpse of the making of it and got to see how Miley's personality outside of performing.
All of the well-known songs from the T.V. show were performed along w/ some new ones from Miley(not Hannah, to make the distinction). I think I might have enjoyed the Miley section even more than the Hannah part. She even performed a very sweet song that she had written for her grand-father who had passed away. The Jonas Brothers were as adorable as could be. Unfortunately, they didn't perform my favorite song, S.O.S. But we did get to hear When You Look Me in the Eyes and Year 3000 while Miley changed from Hannah into Miley. All in all, I thought it was a perfect show for kids and grown-ups alike. If you didn't get the chance to go to one of her actual concerts, I think that this was the next best thing. I know that I had a blast and I'm in my 20's! :)
Minutemen (2008)
Cute, but not the best DCOM
I watched this movie last night with my sisters and was somewhat disappointed with it. The plot itself wasn't too shabby, but I don't think that Disney did as good of a job with it as they could have. The acting was mediocre. Of course, the script may have been mostly at fault moreso than the actors themselves. The script called for the characters to be way overdone, i.e. the nerds were unrealistically nerdy and the jocks were super jerks. And the little sister of Virgil(Jason Dolley) was an absolute brat, where were the parents? I did find this movie to be fairly predictable, especially since the previews leading up to it kind of gave away a good portion of the plot. In fact, previews in general tend to do that. Why, I do not know. Now, I know I've basically bashed the movie, but it wasn't a complete waste of my time. It's a fun movie for kids, to point out a positive. At least that's one thing you can always count on with DCOMs, is that they're decent and family friendly. Despite my criticism, I will probably find myself watching it again when it comes on. So, if you get the chance, check it out for yourself!
One Missed Call (2008)
Better than I had anticipated!
Prior to going to see this movie, my aunt and I had read several reviews bashing it. So, we went into the movie with considerably low expectations, which may be the reason why it managed to exceed them. Yes, the acting was mediocre, the effects were somewhat cheesy and we were left confused at times. But for what it was, it was actually pretty good. The nice thing about the movie is that aside from 5 or 6 inappropriate words, it is surprisingly fairly decent for pre-teens. There was no nudity or sex, just a little kissing. Another plus is that the detective is very pleasant to look at ;) Hardcore horror flick lovers probably wouldn't enjoy One Missed Call, but if you're just looking for a fun one to squeal through, this is it. It'd be great at a pre-teen/teenage(or older) Halloween sleepover.
The Lake House (2006)
Love Conquers All...Even Time
If you're one of those people who tries to make sense of every little thing in a movie, then don't bother going to see this one. But if you're a hopeless romantic who enjoys a good love story, despite the fact that the plot may be rather implausible, this is a wonderful movie! Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock make a great team(once again) and really cause you to be drawn to the characters they are portraying. I didn't mind in the least that the idea of someone being able to communicate w/ someone else in a different time zone is completely and utterly impossible. The fact of the matter is it's a love story and you shouldn't have to delve that deeply into it. Just enjoy it. I laughed, I cried, I resisted the urge to shout out warnings to the characters on the screen and overall, I really loved this movie. I will definitely be buying The Lake House when it comes out on DVD. Two thumbs up!
High School Musical (2006)
Surprisingly Enjoyable
I have been hoping for a while that Disney would do a movie with more of a music theme, being that I'm a musician myself, as opposed to the sports movies that they tend to do. Not that the sports ones are bad(Right on Track was great!), they're just getting a little tired. But when I saw that they were going to do a musical, I was automatically skeptical that Disney could pull it off. They proved me wrong. High School Musical is actually a lot of fun to watch and has some great songs with great choreography. Yes, it's kind of corny, but if you think about it, musicals normally are a little hokey. Look at Grease or Annie, not that I'd rank this movie with either of those.
The actors did a pretty good job on both the singing and acting. They weren't spectacular, but they definitely were right for this movie. Though, I do have to say that Ashley Tisdale's character, Sharpay, was over the top. This is probably more the fault of the writing, rather than her acting, because I do think that she is a good actress. All in all, for what it was, High School Musical did the job and left me pretty satisfied after seeing it. I am a junior in college and a music education major, so as practice for my future career, I will give this movie the grade of a B.
