Hai yang tian tang (2010)
Picture Quality Became Blurry
My sister has a 7 year old son who suffers vaccine injury leaving him autistic. I bought the DVD already knowing of the burden for parents having one of their five kids who'll most likely never leave their nest. There were a lot of details that this film got right: the attention span, the distractions, the stimming, the frustration of sensory overload. It's very painful to see someone repeatedly smash their head into a wall because the impact is actually giving them relief from their thoughts and over stimulated brain.
As the film developed I found it emotionally crushing to see how the hearts of the characters themselves are all melted converts to a father's simple love in spite the inevitable conclusion of mortal separation. Everything of the film was superb except perhaps the blurry picture quality...no wait. I'm sorry, those were my tears that got in the way. The DVD played just fine.
The Rite (2011)
Better than "The Exorcist"
Not to worry...I don't include spoilers.
"The Rite" is better than "The Exorcist" simply because it explains more about the spiritual fight between Good and Evil and the reality of evil spirit at work in the flesh (of humans). "The Exorcist" was the best horror film of its time and it evoked more fear than "The Rite". But, evil spirit is outed more into the light of the general public's understanding in the present movie.
All of the actors were superb. There was a perfect amount of humor (especially with Father Lucas' comical relationship with the stray cats), and I didn't worry about the movie's tempo.
If there's an aspect that I must warn viewers about real life: The Sacraments are far more powerful than a thousand Exorcists and a million Exorcisms. Why? Because the Rite of Exorcism relies on the priest's strength of Faith and his relationship with God, and the Sacraments are God's Presence, Himself.
Why is naming evil spirit important? Reference Genesis and how mankind names creatures in taking dominion of this world. Likewise, we mortals don't know the Name of God--yet, He calls us by name. Because Satan is a mere creature like us, but it is a fallen creature meant to be beneath us--literally. However, Satan is the most cunning of creatures. We can't take dominion of a creature of highest intelligence without the aid of the Creator of Intelligence.
Evil spirit is fallen because of disobedience. But Jesus Chrits, the Son of God, wins our victory because of His Obedience through the Sacrifice of death on the Cross. The value of the Holy Eucharist is equal to and IS the Body and Blood of Christ (if this is hard to understand, then look upon the legally binding contract of printed money and how we use it as currency).
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is the opportunity of the soul to reclaim personal free will, name the sin (which is the name of the evil spirit), and all with the assistance of Jesus Christ.
It's easier to understand if you're raised Catholic. Since I'm Catholic, I didn't need the movie's special effects.
Now, when I study Catechism, I can't help but imagine Anthony Hopkins explaining it to me...with a Welsh accent even.
Sherlock Holmes (2009)
The only thing that could have been better...
...would be getting a better seat in the theater. Every seat was taken and the only one I could get was all the way forward.
I love this film. I will by the DVD only if it's a Special/Director's Cut/Extened/Alternate Ending etc.; or, if Wal-Mart sells it at a discount.
Oh, who am I kidding. I'll buy the DVD and will probably push over little kids and senior citizens to be the first one to get it.
Could there be other things to have made it a better film? Yes, I suppose. How about a prequel? I left the film happy and excited only to run into some old dodgy codger poo pooing the film. He hated it and wanted everyone to know just what he thought. A young lady couldn't understand why such a wackjob would hate the film so much as to run a campaign against it even with theater-goers leaving their seats. "He must be a freemason." I said to her.
I should have sprinkled some Holy Water on him, but I'm sure that he would have melted before our eyes. As I said, he was a codger and was doing more harm to the brotherhood than to the public. I really felt pity for him. Well, not that much--but, it was there. He still has a chance to reject the phony baloney.
Avatar (2009)
I want my money back
I'm reminded of the Tupac character in the movie "Notorious". I'll paraphrase what he said because it's just too awful to repeat word for word.
"Were going to take your money from you and buy your women with it and screw your women with your money."
I don't know about the rest of you humans, but I love being human. "Avatar" is the worst self-hating film I've seen--ever. It's CGI special effects is a mere candy coated poison apple.
The best that can I do with this film is to measure other's intelligence.
"Did you like this film? Yes, you did. Then I won't be disclosing much of myself to you. Have a nice day. God Bless you, and I forgive you for not knowing what you're doing. Keep your distance, I'm keeping my money."
I fault the creator of this film with the harm he does. He's to blame for crapping this over-simplified, political, and racist rhetoric that will incite more to harm than encourage healing. I'm exposed to the propaganda while he's tucked away in his helicopters and limos. You don't think the movie is that powerful? I worked with an Egyptian who told me about the movie "The Hunted". Though the opening had little to do with the rest of the movie, the Egyptian audience saw a massive murder fest of Balkin Muslims being killed by supposed Christian soldiers. The reaction, as the Egyptian co-worker told me, was that many young men shaved their bodies and became jihadists after watching the film.
What do you think Avatar will inspire? People holding hands and singing "We are the World"?
Screw you Cameron. Thanks for making me a freakin' target. I never had to carry a gun to do my job. Thanks to your propaganda, I may just have to invest and train. Maybe I can just be a martyr...the Christian type...not the one that straps bombs to oneself and kills a school bus full of children. Hey, where are those videos of bound and gagged guys getting their heads cut off. Maybe I should practice sitting quietly to wait my turn. The blood's on you Cameron. I hope this gets back to you and you sleep in a cold sweat until you fix this. I don't think you can, though. You've done only what Michael Moore could dream of. You've been Satan's sock puppet and turned the hearts of men against each other. You've scattered instead of gathered.
