Terrible Movie
18 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I have read all of the Mitch Rapp series, and loved them very much, so I was excited to go to American Assassin. What a disappointment! For one thing, Mitch Rapp was totally miscast, nothing like the many descriptions of him in the book. The story line was changed so much, from the way his fiancée was killed on to the rest of the events in the movie. What a letdown for us die-hard Mitch Rapp fans.

Spectacular Movie
16 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"13 Hours" far exceeded my expectations. Michael Bay is a fabulous filmmaker, and this one now leads the list. The structure of the film was very well done, with titles on screen periodically, explaining where the action was at that time. The actors were very good, in what is a very strenuous action movie. I was especially impressed with John Krasinski of "The Office" fame. This part was unlike anything he has ever done, and he handled it so well.

The script was very well done, with a lot of interplay among the 6 soldiers. There was good character development, including involvement with the families back home.

Cinematography was amazing, especially during the battle scenes, and the accompanying soundtrack was perfect, not too overpowering.

Our entire audience was totally absorbed in the movie, and the intensity was exhausting. A very emotional movie.

Even though Obama and Hillary are never mentioned, they are ever- present in one seeing the total lack of support and help provided during the chaos.

I have already read several articles, where critics have said that certain things in the movie never happened, including the stand down order. However, since the book was written in conjunction with the 4 surviving soldiers input, I choose to believe their version over politicians and pundits who weren't there.

This is a must see. It is one of those rare movies that I want to see a second time.

What Going to the Movies Should Be!!
3 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
After a summer of sci-fi, super heroes, and animation, we were looking forward to Mission Impossible, hoping it would not disappoint. Wow! What a movie it was. Our audience sat spellbound throughout, and applauded at the end.

The story line, while complex and containing lots of surprises, was still one that one could follow. The action scenes were spectacular. The car chase was like nothing you have seen, and the motorcycle chase was even more amazing.

The locales, from London to Vienna to Casablanca and elsewhere, were very well done.

And the acting! Tom was as good as he's ever been. His fellow MI friends, Jeremy Renner, Ving Rhames, and especially Simon Pegg, were great. The female lead, Rebecca Ferguson, kept one guessing throughout if she was bad or good. And the bad guys, were they ever bad!

The audience left the theater smiling and talking about how much fun it was watching this movie. We wish all movies made us feel this way!

We were surprised at how well we liked it!
1 January 2015
We went to this movie by default, since there wasn't anything else showing that we wanted to see on New Year's Eve afternoon. But all four of us enjoyed the movie very much, and in fact, at the end, our audience clapped. Other reviewers are correct, in that it isn't a movie for young children, and yes, it is a musical (duh). We thought all of the actors were great, with good singing voices, with the exception of Johnny Depp, who portrayed his part in a very creepy way. Meryl Streep is her usual fantastic self, and has a great voice. The costumes and sets were superb, and the storyline is very clever, as it weaves so many fairy tales together into the plot.

We are surprised at all the one-star bad reviews. We went to the movie not expecting much, but were delighted that we went. It's a fun movie, in this current crop of so many depressing, overly serious movies. Go and enjoy.

Noah (2014)

Worst movie ever!
29 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Even though I had read a number of critical articles about Noah, I went anyway on opening day. I thought I'd give it the benefit of the doubt. Even giving it that benefit, it was one of the worst movies I have seen. I was not expecting a completely Biblical account of the Noah story, and knew that additions to the story would have to be added, since the Bible version is quite brief. However, who would have thought that would mean weird talking Rock creatures, which looked like they came from a Transformer movie. And the area where Noah lived was totally barren rock....until he planted the seed Methuzalah gave him, and immediately an entire forest shoots up out of the ground, to supply wood to build the ark. When the "flood" came, instead of it starting to rain, huge columns of water were shooting up from the ground. What's with that?

I was especially looking forward to the animal scenes, since the Humane Society commended the director for not using any real animals in the filming. Well, that was more than obvious! Computer animation has come a long way over the years, but this movie apparently used one of the earliest versions of CG. It looked totally fake, and all occurred in about a minute.

The acting was terrible, including Russell Crowe. And the script was even worse. After a very climactic scene, where he almost killed the twin babies in a state of rage, he explains that "All I saw was love." I almost left at that point!

If one reads all the reader reviews, I think it will become apparent that most of the viewers agree with my comments. At the end of the movie, our audience spontaneously let out an audible groan. I have never heard such negative comments as people were walking up the aisle.

Save your money!

Such a wonderful movie
19 January 2014
This is the kind of movie we love....very unusual and an interesting story, great photography, great screenplay, great music, great cast. So many movies these days are so violent or graphic, and with terrible language. This movie was so much fun to watch, and, for a change, we left the theater smiling and happy, instead of disturbed and depressed!

Ben Stiller was excellent in the title role. As he goes into his "zones", imagining things as he wished they would be, one is transported to exotic locales and wonderful characters. The transitions from imagination to reality are seamless. Shirley MacLaine has a fairly small part, but is her always wonderful self in her role as Walter's mother. We waited so long to go see this that we almost missed it at our theater. This is one to see on the big screen and with an audience. Our audience was of all ages, young to old, and everyone seemed to like it. Go see it!

The American (2010)

Very Slow and Very Boring
1 September 2010
This movie had such minimal dialog. There was no character development. Who was he, who did he work for, why. I was expecting at least beautiful scenery, but even that was disappointing. This 1:40 movie seemed to be twice that long. It is a bad sign when, at the movie's end, most of the audience let out an audible groan. George Clooney, why would you make this movie? He had very little good acting, which he can do so well. Instead, the scenes were very protracted, very overly so. What had happened to him in the past? Even the "sex scenes" that have been publicized were nothing appealing. Our party of four all agreed it was one of the worst movies we have seen, such a disappointment, as we made special plans to go on opening night, in eager anticipation.

Terrible Movie, Definitely Not For Children
15 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
At the beginning of the movie, the beautiful photography and the scenes of the fox were amazing. However, the story was so very slow and boring. And then the little girl begins to domesticate the fox, which leads to tragic events. We live in the forest, and frequently see foxes. One thing anyone should know is that you leave wild animals to be wild, and enjoy them from afar. This movie sets a terrible example to the children who will be watching it, in trying to make a wild creature into a pet. I do not know what the point of the story was supposed to be. Even after the terrible events with the main fox, the little girl was still wanting to play with the kits. Does she never learn her lesson? And there are other scenes featuring predator animals to the fox, which only adds to the trauma inflicted on children watching this movie. What a disappointment this movie was. And what a horrible story it tells. The final narrated dialog was so stupid, by which time my wife and I were screaming at the TV! I absolutely hated this movie, and would never recommend it to anyone!

James Bond in Name Only
7 December 2008
Do you remember the wonderful old James Bond movies? So fun to watch, there was always a great villain, Blofeld, Goldfinger, etc. And Q always outfitted James with great and clever gadgets. And the scenery and the Bond girls! Well, if you want a James Bond fix, go rent an old DVD. Quantum of Solace (and Casino Royale) bear no resemblance to those classic Bond movies. While I like Daniel Craig, he is so very tough and brutal, and is always so beat up. The Bond girls are also too rough and tough, with minimal chemistry with Bond. The story is totally undecipherable, with multitudes of bad guys, even though you don't know who, why, or where from, nor do you care. Non-stop car chases and gunfights, but there is no emotional involvement with any of it. Even M, the wonderful Judi Dench, seemed to just read her lines. If this was just a stand-alone action movie, it would be o.k., but to call it "James Bond" makes the movie a disappointment.
