Gong woo (2004)
Decent.
There was much hype about the latest crime underworld movie called Jiang Hu. Sad to say it didn't do so well in the Hong Kong Box office and it was repeatedly slammed by Critics. Ironic though is that I find most non-official Critics such as fellow IMDb users, Internet users, and myself giving this film anywhere from thumbs in the middle to thumbs up. I'm probably not going to go much into the film since most reviewers have already elaborated on it. I am going to say though that it was sort of a waste to pit most of the "Infernal affairs" cast into this movie and yet you walk out not necessary caring for one of the characters. Andy Lau and Jacky Cheung are the highlights of the film though. Their dinner conversations on playing "Triad-chess" ignites the fuse on this film. Edison Chen and Shawn Yue surprisingly have improved on their acting on a margin of 80%. The last thing(s) that captivated me on this movie was the Musical Score, the wonderful lady- sung ballad in the opening and closing credits, and Chapman To's rendered Jiang Hu theme. For those who are looking for an abundance of Triad fight(s), look elsewhere. Sure this movie still has some violence, greed, lust, and full-on betrayals, but it is rather jelly-filled dialogue instead. Jiang Hu isn't a terrible movie but it isn't a best I've seen either. I give it a 7/10.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Much better than X2
This movie is definitely what a comic book movie is like. This movie has far superior character development, plot, humor, drama, than the overrated X2. Don't get me wrong I like X2 but it doesn't deserve the hype and ratings most people say it does because it simply doesn't have the heart and passion the Spider-man movies have. The only thing I didn't like about this movie is that there was a bit too much dialogue and cheesy screaming scenes people in the audience had to endure. Other besides that this movie is perfect comic book material. Overall the acting has improved and so did the CGI. Doc Ock is a far more menacing foe than the Goblin will ever be. Great ending this time and setup for the next Spidey installment. Sam Raimi once again got a mission well done. See ya 2007!
The Last Samurai (2003)
One of the best movies of 2003
This years movies was constantly bombarded with average or horrific sequels and terrible comic book adapted movies until this movie and Lord of the Rings came out. For once, "The Last Samurai" is portrays Japanese Samurai culture more accurate than any other American translated Japanese movies. I loved every minute of this movie although I wonder if people did had such grammar like "shoving up your ---" back in the late 1800's. Anyways this is a good film to watch alongside LOTR:ROTK this year. Thumbs up!
Daredevil (2003)
Okay film.
After seeing a great comic adaption done by Sam Raimi for Spider-man, I was pumped up to see another superhero take the big screen. Daredevil: Man without fear was more like man that needed to be a little more emotional. I'll just skip to the review points. Ben Affleck needs to be more emotional if he was to play a blind man. He is so stiff as his role as Matt Murdock. How he got the part is still beyond me. Jennifer Garner as Elecktra was decent but badly wasted in the film. Colin Farell as Bullseye was awesome! The sad thing though is that he doesn't wear a costume when his character does in the comics. Cheap budget I guess. Last, Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin? He was good too but the fact is that Kingpin is a white guy in all marvel comics. For now, Duncan's cool.
Movie starts out great then we get treated to ultimately boring romance scene in the middle. Of course we get more of Ben Affleck's non-believable blind man acting. If the sequel does come out, I hope it won't turn out like this one.
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
reloaded too many
visual effects were stunning and so was the action but my gripe is that the action stalled too long at times. The story was kinda pointless, especially with the monotone architect scene. This is worth a watch but doesn't have the feel the first Matrix had. Enjoy I think?
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
terrible
Only Yoda's scene is worth watching. Jango fett is a cool character but is basically watsed easily. The CGI and music are great but are practically recycled over and over and nothing too special about it. The biggest flaw(s) was casting Hayden as Anakin(he's one bad actor), the terrible love scenes, and an unconvincing heel turn for Anakin. Hopefully episode 3 won't bomb like this one.
