Valhalla Rising (2009)
Just Don't Watch It.
Really. There are so many other ways to spend 93 minutes of your life. So many other movies you could watch. Skip this one. Totally pointless. Made me mad to have wasted time on it. Doesn't even have that "So bad that it's good" camp value. Worthless. I know that there are some people that enjoy bad movies and will totally disagree with my assessment of the value of this movie, but I cannot see why it was ever made. To read the IMDb trivia and see that it is the director's favorite movie that he has ever done makes me seriously question if I ever want to see another movie that he has directed. I cannot stress strongly enough how disappointed and annoyed I was at the conclusion. Thirty minutes into the movie I knew I had made a poor viewing choice.
The Factory (2012)
Couldn't have guessed it, and wondering why right to video?
From the very start, reading the description here on IMDb, I thought I had this movie figured out. Typical "cop makes it personal" story because the criminal involves his family. Well, maybe that describes this movie, but doesn't define it. There are several twists in the plot that I couldn't guess (and I am fairly good at that) and I couldn't have come up with the ending at all. I found John Cusack's performance very real, but just adequate. I have seen him do better filling in and rounding out a character. I hadn't seen any of the other actors so they were unknown to me. There are a few parts of the story and background that might require a bit more of a suspension of disbelief than some viewers can give, but if you can get through the rough parts in the script, you will be rewarded at the end. Overall, a very well paced, well edited, well directed film that should have received more attention than it did. A good pick for "movie night".
The Master (2012)
How could a great cast lead to an awful, pointless film?
I do not understand how so many wonderfully talented actors and actresses could have been hoodwinked into working on such a terrible and pointless film. There was no story, no plot, no development in the characters. I am glad that I rented this for $0.50, otherwise I would have felt cheated out of my money. Now I just feel cheated out of my time. Additionally, how could it be nominated for so many awards? I have seen much better films with totally unknown actors go unnoticed that I now put very little stock into awards.
Please, save yourself some time and money and skip this film. You really aren't missing anything.
RED (2010)
An outstanding "sleeper" of a film!
I hadn't really heard of this film, perhaps I just missed any hype or promotions for it. However, what a treat! A terrific cast with an interesting plot and fantastic action! It was fun to see Bruce Willis doing what Bruce Willis does best in action movies, but also a fun surprise to see Morgan Freeman in a different role for him. I see that a sequel is being released and I hope that it captures the fun and spirit of the first film. I enjoyed every moment of the film and it was very well paced and edited. There were enough surprising turns to keep me guessing and cheering for the protagonist all the way to the end. One of the best action films I have seen in a long time that wasn't totally predictable.
Burn After Reading (2008)
What should have been done to the script.
The script should have been burned after being read the first time.
This was a pointless waste of time.
I no longer consider a Coen brother movie a "sure thing".
Really. It was awful.
The characters were vacant, there wasn't a plot, there was barely a story, and at the end, you are left with a frustrating sense of loss. The loss of 93 minutes that you could have spent doing nearly anything else more interesting, including vacuuming your home, or picking the lint out from between your toes.
I can barely write ten lines of text about it. I will, however, go research how this movie did in the theaters, and the other comments other users have made about this film. Perhaps I fell asleep after the first five minutes, and woke for the last five. I may as well have, nothing interesting or even remotely entertaining occurred in the interim.
