Apocalypto (2006)
A pure "chef-d'oeuvre"
Can't say haw many times I've watched what I consider Mel Gibson's masterpeice.
He takes you by the hand right back before the conquistadors set foot on the new land, with a brilliant photography and marvellous acting, on a simple but heart thumping story, of which you cannot come out indifferent.
Un peu, beaucoup, aveuglément! (2015)
"Blind date" Extremely funny and intelligent!
Romcom's often tend to bore me these days but I feel pretty lucky that french TV sometimes show little gems like this one. I don't remember having heard of it in 2005 when it came out, but apparently it was only showing on around 250 screens in all of France.
This is the first time that Clovis Cornillac (great in "Le Cactus" 2005) directed a film, and I have to admit he's set the bar quite high for a first shot. His wife Lilou Fogli wrote with him the scenario but also stars as Charlotte, a secondary role very well played. In fact the secondary rolls are spot on and are as good as the lead actors (Mélanie Bernier and Clovis Cornillac), who do a sort of blind duet I won't say more about the story.
Cornillac comes from a family of actors, it runs in his blood and you can see that he's a passionate actor in every film, as he doesn't act his role but literally lives it.
I highly recommend you find a DVD, which is what I'm about to do as soon as I've finished this review.
L'adversaire (2002)
Without it being a gory horror film, I guarantee some bad feelings
In "L'adversaire" we have probably one of the best French actors of his generation.
Daniel Auteuil could be compared to Dustin Hoffman in many ways with great depths in his acting.
Any character from Ugolin in "Jean de Florette", (Claude Berri's masterpiece), a simple minded crop farmer in the deep south. To this horrendous father and husband capable of the unbearable, unthinkable and terrifying act. But by way of some incredible acting, Daniel Auteuil never the less manages to give this gruesome character a humane nearly touching side, as he strives not to drown under the burden of his life long lie. I must admit that the film shattered me and I felt quite nauseated. It could only have been made by a women like Nicole Garcia, only her talent could deal with a subject such as this one and come out with a film that succeeds in pinning you to your seat, no matter how much you would like to look away, without turning it into a horror film. In a way this film has a certain Hitchcock feel to it.
L'outsider (2016)
A pretty good biography and the goings on of one of the major banks
Christophe Barratier (The Chorus) and the producer Jacques Perrin (Océans) have done it again. Having not read the book that the Trader Jérôme Kerviel wrote about his true story, I can't judge if the film is well adapted but what I can say is that the director and actors have done a good job portraying a World that normally goes unseen. The characters are better than real life thanks to Athur Dupont (Chacun sa nuit)and François-Xavier Demaison (who, strange as it may seem started off in life in international finance, before becoming a successful actor and humorist). True we don't get the same emotions that we get with such a storyteller such as Martin Scorsese with his "The Wolf of Wall street", even if the two films depict a similar kind of pattern that has repeated itself, but this time in Paris, France. But we come out of the theater with a lot of food for thought and having enjoyed some good acting.
