Mindhunter (2017–2019)
9/10
I'm watching AGAIN-for the top quality.
19 February 2024
There aren't many shows like this. Excellent cast, unusual dynamics, great actors, a feeling of truth pervades. I read this was an expensive show and Netflix did not approve season 3, plus the show was super time consuming to make. Mindhunter is quality TV. Congratulations to even more relevance in 2024. The inmates were gorgeously cast. The FBI team super intelligent, conflicts so delicately written. I did not prefer the Bill Tench son's sub-plot. The constant smoking made me feel queasy. But the relationships and the politics were real to me. If I had made this show I would be so proud of it.

The humanity on display in Smartless road tour
21 June 2023
I can't stop obsessing about this series of 6 appearances in large theaters by podcast hosts Sean Hayes, Jason Bateman and Will Arnett. Why? Because it's such a horrid idea to put a podcast on a stage! And yet...never having heard any of the shtick on the podcast, I enjoyed so much of the ribbing. Parts of the documentary, beautifully presented in black and white, were cringe-worthy, parts were bare-naked, revealing insecurities and personal hygiene habits. Parts were embarrassing to the hosts, as it was obvious they were over-compensating for dull spots in the show/s. Each host displayed amazing quick wit in spots. Each revealed, probably inadvertently, hurts in their past. I was uncomfortable (especially with guest Kevin Hart) - I was tickled, I was repelled, I was riveted and binged the whole 6 episodes. Stars in the entertainment industry are NOT like us. And yet they kind of are, so you can dislike some of their personality traits. Parts of the episodes were SO awkward. I may change my opinion... but first look? Absolute daring...revealing, I say "don't do it anymore." I felt the pressure in my living room.

Karen Pirie (2022– )

Nowadays "Refreshing" is like an A+ in School
10 December 2022
Karen Pirie surprised me. She was a tad annoying. She wore these odd sweaters that I found unfashionable, and yet I wanted one. I wanted to style her hair differently. However, she was underestimated, and she was a woman like in a lot if other shows, who had a lot of male gazes to contend with. One minute she was pretty, the next she was not. I didn't feel that she was a star, which really allowed me to invest in the plot. So many actors are over-exposed, that a viewer can't even begin to lose themselves in the story. I loved that I did not know all her actor "habits." The plot was fine, and how I admire a sense of humor in a show. There were some cracks, quips, and situations that made me laugh. I'd like more shows like this tasty series.

i cannot watch this show/it's sad
25 July 2022
The narrative is hard to follow and I don't care about any of the characters. The part of all humans that connects us is missing. It's too niche. And kind of shallow. It's kinetic. Personally I need something to hold on to, a character or actress I like, a goal I'm waiting to get to in the drama, a revelation I sense might be coming. I feel bad that it's Issa Rae and it's not speaking to me in any way.

Can't find a show this good after all these Years!
26 October 2020
It has come to my attention during the 2020 Lockdown due to Coronavirus, that one of my favorite TV series ever is irreplaceable. In every girl's lifetime, she sees her girlfriends, her boyfriends, her thoughts, her fears, her aggravations, her peccadillos and her secrets put right out there on a TV screen. Not to mention the gut laughs. Miranda putting the chocolate cake in the garbage and then digging it out again. Samantha finally crying at Miranda's Mother's funeral. Charlotte York-Goldenblatt saying about the flowers she had so carefully ordered for the funeral "They were supposed to say I'm sorry for your loss. Not I'm dead let's disco." I had a girl crush on Carrie. Enough said about Carrie. She to me, was sexy and fun and edgy. If you get in your car and go to rent the next season, and Blockbuster is out, then you go to buy it at Target, you really really like the show. The movie was not good. The TV Show was CRAZY good. It's been analyzed to death. I think more men reviewed the show and they did not get it. We need more top women reviewers I think. No way should this show be any less than 85% That's my review.

One of those shows you're so pleased to find!
7 June 2020
How delightful. Another Apple show to watch in bed on my iPad. Which doesn't have unlimited space left. Original material no less! The episodes are like eating peanuts. I like both leads for their gentle silliness which is also clever. Jason and Nikki are believable as a couple, and so comfortable with each other that you settle in with blankets like you do when you know you're safe with a show. I'm a little tired of caustic put downs and thankfully the writers have avoided that technique here. I'm rooting for this show!

The Magic of Ordinary Days (2005 TV Movie)

Romantic, beautifully filmed, wonderfully moving: Just Right
8 February 2020
I fell into this movie so easily, as if it were an old friend. Hooray for somewhat predictable, the kind of snuggle into the blankets, "I found a good movie!" predictable. The story is told with sensitive beauty. I could not leave the room. Skeet Ulrich and Keri Russell take their time with every emotional advancement, the farmhouse is photogenic, the land is stunning, I loved the old truck and the eventual presence of the dog in the house. Everything you wished would happen, happened. Family love, great farm food, a barn dance, excellent costume work. If you've got that yearning for an hour and a half immersed in rural gorgeousness and no violence, this is for you.

Vera: The Ghost Position (2012)
Season 2, Episode 1

As a NEW Viewer of an OLD Show I'm a little perplexed
16 July 2019
My good Friend Vicki has watched every season of "Vera.I had a vague memory of seeing Season One, so I started now with Season Two. I liked it for the lack of glamour, the camera work, the scenery, and the few nods to humor amid the grim landscape (both physical and psychological.) I have no idea, however, what the heck happened. Reviews don't reveal the details and I have no inclination to watch it over again. What was Vera's relationship with her old superior? Right from the get-go the mystery was confusing. Why did he kill himself? Was he mentally deranged or what. Characters were introduced willy-nilly. The teacher (got short shrift as an actress for sure, Stella was unconscious through an hour and twenty minutes, and the young man : I don't even know who he was, or why he was in the mix. I liked Rose Leslie (Lena Holgate) was she the culprit? I don't know who threw the fire bomb. Atmosphere A, Plot line D.

Small Masterpiece
6 August 2012
I did not have TV, so I rented movies, and found this TV mini-series at a used media outlet. I have watched it over 20 times over a 5 year period. I felt alone in my obsession until I checked online for other reviews. The music makes my heart feel glad, and the acting and special tone of the relationships and cadence of the speech pleases me no end. I read everything you can find on the Tempts. They were a favorite in college, lying on my dorm bed with earphones on -- however, the mini-series which honors the music, dancing, and stage appearances has earned, in my heart, top honors. If a famous actor had been in it, it would have won an Academy Award. And probably not been as good as it is. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Still Packs a Punch
6 May 2012
I have seen this movie many times, and recently read new overviews of Diane Keaton's work, so rented it again. The agony of indecision, the power of ego, the twisted things a person will do in response to losing a partner, and the ways we fool ourselves as well as defend ourselves, smack you in the face in this film. Many of us are not "well-balanced" when it comes to loss and change. Many of us remember being emotionally overwrought in a relationship that was breaking down. Despite reading some negative comments about "Shoot the Moon" I still found myself drawn in and knocked out by it. The material was tricky, I found myself gasping in parts because I recognized the despair. Like they say, "Not for Everyone," but definitely for me.
