Prey (2022)
Don't fall for the whiny 'woke' accusations
This is far from being one of those movies.
The story itself is pretty simple, just like it was on the first one, and that's one of the good things about this, it doesn't overcomplicate what should be a basic story, there's no military, conspiracies, whatever.
The set pieces are well done, we have a good amount of intense action, with a bit of violence all around. The main character is someone you actually give a crap about, unlike what you see in other movies from this franchise.
The director is obviously a fan of the original, there are some nice references throughout the movie, and all of this is very well shot, it has great cinematography and a nice complimentary soundtrack.
This is far better than you'd expect from the 7th movie in the Predator saga. A shame it wasn't released in theaters. My favourite after the 1987 original.
8/10.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
I enjoyed it for it was
Yeah, I know it has a lot of flaws (story, characters, acting), but my expectations were so low I ended up having fun. Visually the film is cool, the cinematography and scenery is solid, and most of all it has A LOT of bloody violence. That's what I wanted, that's what I got.
Blood Fest (2018)
Lacks a bit of everything
It's not an awful horror, but that's it, overall it's on the mediocre side. The characters aren't that great or developed and they're all a bit stereotypical, you know what you'll get once they are presented. The actors itself do their best, they're not great but at least it's not bad acting like you see in other low budget horror. The effects are sort of nice, there's some gore here and there, wouldn't have minded more though. Can't really say there's much build or tension, it's all in your face, no subtlety at all. Basically it's 90 minutes of an uninspiring meta horror, there's better self aware horror out there.
Supernatural: Carry On (2020)
A solid ending
While I didn't really agree with the direction this final episode went in, it was all in all very nicely done, with some really good emotional moments, good acting by Jensen Ackles, overall a decent way to end the story of the Winchester brothers. A few more cameos would have been great but sadly this pandemic didn't allow it. Understandable. Goodbye to one of the my all-time favourite shows. I'll miss the adventures.
Ma (2019)
Very predictable and dull
Octavia Spencer does a good job as the main character, but the rest (story, teen characters, progression of story, suspense, etc.) is very uninspiring. There's not much tension going on, the twists and turns aren't captivating, and the final act lacks more intensity.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Safe but enjoyable superhero movie
It's a solid introduction to this new character. Best scenes in the movie are the ones in space, the action is pretty good there. Some good chemistry between Larson and Jackson. A bit dull in the middle of the story, but it picks up in the final act. Overall, a good and solid entry in the MCU.
The Prodigy (2019)
Nothing to see here...
Few scares, the story followed an unoriginal path, acting was competent I guess. This was all really bland and uninspired. There was no sense of dread, something that you want to see in a horror movie, it was all done in a safe and predictable manner.
Venom (2018)
A one man show
While the critics were a bit harsh with this movie, this is far from perfect or even good in terms of story, characters and dialogues. However, it's entertaining, doesn't drag too much and it has a really good performance by Tom Hardy. His charisma and intensity are on point. That intensity was missing in the actor who portrayed the villain, one of the things that really hurts this movie. There was also little chemistry between Hardy and Williams, who was sadly wasted in this movie. Overall, it's a fun time thanks to Hardy. This wouldn't succeed at all with a lesser actor.
Halloween (1978)
My all-time favourite movie... *** SPOILERS ***
From the moment the music starts playing in the opening credits, I was instantly hooked. Then, right after that, comes the superb opening scene, again with excellent music. Michael's escape from the sanitarium is also memorable. From then, the movie slows down a bit, as Myers returns to Haddonfield and begins stalking a student named Laurie. But the suspense is always present, thanks to a subtle atmosphere. You know something will happen. You just have to wait. And it does happen, in the last half hour of the movie, when all hell breaks loose...
This is John Carpenter's second best movie to date (only The Thing is superior). His direction is almost flawless. Each scene seems carefully planned, building up a tremendous atmosphere, rarely seen in slasher/horror movies. He decided well in not showing too much of The Shape, and also in the minimal amount of blood used. Unfortunately, the sequels completely abandoned this principles. They put gore over suspense. As I've mentioned, the atmosphere is great, and for that, the music, by the same Carpenter, is also truly essential, along with the cinematography by Dean Cundey, which is just stunning and beautiful. Two amazing technical achievements considering the very low budget this movie was made on.
As for the actors, while they are not required to do anything out of this world, they still play their parts very well. Obviously, Jamie Lee Curtis (with her screams), and Donald Pleasance (with his classic lines and charismatic presence) shine the most.
All in all, this is a very simple movie, as was the case with earlier Carpenter. However, it completely deserves to be called a masterpiece, which it is.
House (1985)
Entertaining 80's horror/comedy movie
Pleasant mix of horror and comedy, with some truly hilarious scenes, though others don't achieve the same effect. While this one entertains, it still ends up far behind when compared to other movies of this type, like Evil Dead 2. I must also admit I found a bit offensive the use of the Vietnam War, and the suffering it brought to many people, for comic purposes. The final part of the movie (third act) didn't possess the same dynamic of what was being seen so far, and the happy ending felt contrived. Despite this aspects, I very much liked the fact that they didn't came up with some boring explanation as to why the house was haunted. Weird stuff just happened and that's it.
